–  Ens Ensure ure the comp compete etence nce of work workers ers

Do an on-site Risk Assessment or Job Hazard Analysis.

–  Che Check ck for for prop proper er too tools ls for for the the Job Job –  Determi Determine ne and select select the the proper proper arc-rat arc-rated ed Persona Personall Protective Equipment (PPE) and associated PPE as defined in the arc-flash risk assessment or ABB matrix –  Engage Engage the the person person responsib responsible le for electr electrical ical equipm equipment ent or system, review single-line, schematics, switching plans, etc. –

Decide on the approp Decide appropriat riate e work method methods s and Initiat Initiate e the Permit To Work (PTW) process

Clearly identify

Disconnect

the location andwork equipment

all andsources Secure against reconnection

Use your senses to identify problem areas. Define the work area via barriers and barricading and label equipment.  Avoid dist ract ions such as t alki ng o r text ing on th e pho ne.

Perform switching, when required and only while wearing the proper PPE identified in step 1, or observe switching from a safe distance and implement Lockout/Tagout.

step /5/ 

 Verif y the  Verify t he abs absenc ence e of operating voltage Utilize only properly rated and inspected detection devices and wear proper PPE identified in step 1: –  Test voltage detection device

Carry out earthing and short circuiting Close and lock earthing switch or apply portable equipment for earthing and short-circuiting while wearing the proper PPE identified in step 1.

–  Test for voltage –  Test voltage detection device

step /7 / 7/  step /6/  Determine minimum approach distances, apply screening, and when applicable, padlock both cable and buss bar shutters, utilize proper insulated gloves and tools for inadvertent contact potential.

Protect against adjacent live parts and take special precautions when  when  close to bare conductors

Complete the permit to work and “Walk the Permit”
