Founded in 1916, Lokomo Steel Foundry has been a pioneer in the production of stainless steel castings ever since. Finland's first electric arc furnace began operating at Lokomo Steel Foundry in the early 1920s. In 1982, Lokomo Steel Foundry began to manufacture vacuum steels using the world's first “Vacuum Oxygen Decarburization Converter” (VODC).

Vacuum Refining, Vaculok® Steels Vaculok® steels are melted in an electric arc or induction furnace and then refined by the VODC. The vacuum refining process is a combination of vacuum decarburization and vacuum degassing. Deep-vacuum and argon stirring reduce the carbon content and remove impurities from the steel.

Lokomo Steel Foundry's vacuum steels are marketed under the Vaculok® trademark. Vaculok® steels have superior properties such as excellent toughness, fatigue strength and weldability, since they are free of impurities and have a low carbon content.
