Statement of Purpose for School Admission...

Description

To: Osaka University, Graduate School of Engineering Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) Scholarship Program Submitted by Ye Wint Thu (Application receipt number 225822893425)

Statement of Purpose I used to write engineering articles on a Facebook page in Myanmar language for the purpose of sharing knowledges to Myanmar society. One day I lost confidence to write these because the education level all other admins and authors of the page are higher than me. I felt something is lost in my writings compared to theirs. My writings came from workplace, so they are more experiential than educational. Experience is about the past and education predicts the future. Experience is a kind of repetition, so I cannot move forward without advanced education. Since then, I’ve decided to improve myself by studying at a higher level. After making decision to make further study, I brainstormed to choose which type of course to pursue. While working in Singapore, I could apply part-time course in Singapore’s leading universities. I hesitated to apply part-time degree since there is no campus life. During November 2015, I visited to my friend who is studying at Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. Staying in campus with him, I was motivated by AIT students around me. They were very active in developing their research theses. I felt like I was in right community. That visit made my decision stronger. When I found about HM KING'S scholarship program, I felt that the time is ripe to implement my instinct. When I looked back to undergraduate student life, I found myself happily in classes of structural analysis. Starting form engineering mechanics to finite element method, I did not feel boring to attend these classes. Force, stress, section modulus, bending, shear, bearing, etc. were very fascinating terms for me. Again in work, building model, applying loads and analyzing the structure are never tiring processes for me. My deep concentration on structural analysis never fails to attract me to work late at night. Now I am working on the design of derrick and substructure for drilling rig to get API SPEC 4F certificate. This process involves a lot of structural calculations, ANSYS modelling and analysis. Using a standard or specification to develop a design is not a great deal, but ability to write these standards need a lot of researches and efforts. I would like to be the one who can write these standards and specifications. As Myanmar is starting to open to the world, I believe my native country will need professional engineers to develop the nation in near future. At the time when the nation want me, I should have capabilities to take part in. It seems four years of work experience is enough to reapply in my country. However, experience alone cannot lead to effective efforts. I need advanced education to combine with my experience.

Statement of Career Objectives Objectives To work in an organization which can give me experiences to get my destination of becoming a researcher and a university lecturer What I have achieved Four year of structural related work experiences in marine industry. I have learned the basic concept of work flow in a community, practical application of engineering theories, various kinds of finite element software and, standards and specifications of regulatory bodies. During these four years, I mastered in coordination. Successful coordination between employers, owners, classification societies, production teams of different cultural background is the noticeable achievement I have ever got. Future Plan To try to get master degree before the age of 30 To work in engineering related company in Myanmar for three years minimum after master degree To pursue doctoral course in a well-known University To enter into research field while working as a lecturer in a University in Myanmar (if possible, Myanmar Maritime University)

Indicate your aspirations; describe your specific field(s) of interest/expertise and how you would use your AIT degree in furthering the social and economic development of your home country and the region.

My ultimate goal in life is to become a researcher and lecturer in a University in Myanmar. This goal could not be achieved magically in a short time. It is a long term process which consists of a lot of efforts and commitments. In my undergraduate study, I was very fond of structural engineering. So I applied structural engineering related roles at most in my job hunting process. Now I have nearly four years work experience in structural engineering field. These are satisfactory years in life since I got a chance to apply my educational background in work. However, I could not content my current position. It is time to raise my education level to one more step. After learning what AIT taught about structural engineering, I have found that most of the structural engineering course are fit with my background. CE72.51: Advanced Steel Structures, for example, is very attractive to me as I am more familiar with steel structure rather than concrete structure because of my naval architecture background. As I am currently working on FEA of offshore structure, CE72.12: Finite Element Methods in Engineering will be very useful for me. It is well-known that economy and education of my home country, Myanmar, was ruined under military dictators. In coming year, democratically elected government will take over Myanmar. Economy and education is expected to be reconstructed. In next two or three years, my country will need competent persons in every corner of profession. Structural engineering will play a vital role in developing nation, from designing a lamppost to construction of megastructure. I want to be operationally ready at that time. If it were a war, the weapon I might need is education. As I introduced in first paragraph, I want to be a university lecturer to sow a good seed in my country education ground. Teaching and learning methods in respectable university like AIT should be adopted in educational reform. I will observe educational system of AIT while I am studying structural engineering. Good and effective methods will be brought back to introduce in Myanmar educational society. So I am eagerly believe that I can serve better my home country with the master degree conferred by AIT.

The economy and education of my country, Myanmar, being ruined under military dictators is an infamous story in global image. In 2016, new government which arises from democratic election, will take over. As a result, everyone is optimistic about Economy and education to be restructured for good. It is inevitable that professionals will be necessary in every sector of the process for immediate plans as well as long term plans.
