(1st) W2725 The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker, 1974-81) (1st) W2726 The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee, 1970-4) (1st) W2727 The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton, 1966-9) (1st) W2728 The First Doctor (William Hartnell, 1963-6) 2013 (26 MARCH). 50th ANNIVERSARY OF DOCTOR WHO (TV programme) The longest running television series devoted to science-fiction, first broadcast in 1963, is commemorated on its 50th anniversary. The first Doctor starred William Hartnell who was accompanied by his granddaughter and her two teachers. The second series introduced the Daleks and their war cry ‘Ex-term-in-ate’ was an instant success. The space ship was the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space). The budget was modest hence the police box, not unusual in 1960s London. The police box took on a “chameleon circuit” enabling it to blend into any background and surroundings on landing .Tom Baker, holds the distinction of the longest serving doctor from 1974 to 1981. The team at the BBC responsible at the start were Sydney Newman, head of drama, Donald Wilson and Cecil Edwin. In 1966 the Cybermen made their first appearance in The Tenth Planet. The issue comprised three sheets, two sheets comprising se-tenant strips of 4 arranged 4×6 in two panes up of 24 and one sheet of se-tenant strips of 6 arranged 6×4 two panes up of 24 all with a horizontal gutter margin. The issue includes a Premium Stamp Booklet, retail booklet and miniature sheet. The stamps from counter sheets were conventionally gummed and printed in lithography by Cartor. The sheets were on nonfluorescent coated paper with “all over” phosphor with (blue fluor) and PVA gum. The stamps were designed by GBH. A. They are different to the stamps printed in counter sheets but we list one number for both. Credit for the company that printed the booklet is stated as Cartor. It is likely that Walsall printed the Machin pane. The colours were greenish yellow, bright magenta, new blue and black (reading down). Plate blocks of twenty (4×5) and twelve (3×4) are needed to include the four squared (2×2) or (1×4) box with one or two spots shaded indicating two panes “A” above two panes “B” as indicated by the stock codes described below. The left vertical margin shows a grid box opposite row 2 and plate numbers C1×(4) opposite horizontal rows 4 or 5 and at right barcode and stock code opposite rows 1/2, traffic lights opposite rows 4 or 5 and sideways FSC mark opposite rows 4 or 5.
