iconic of all the C segment, the seventh generation Golf proves once again that we can, and we must return constantly question the limits of what is achievable. Why elaborate systems that make driving a pleasure should they be reserved for higher segment? The introduction of modular MQB platform transverse engine allows a greater diversification in the technical composition of a vehicle, regardless of segment.

This feature also provides the vehicle's electrical system, the characteristics and importance within the MQB are explained as generic after the example of the new Golf 2013 this Self-Study Programme.

Due to the large number of new account that the Golf 2013, electrical and electronic aspects are dealt with separately in several self-study programs in order to give a better overview for the reader.

this approach were "restriction of the multiplicity of parts" and "complexity management."

The modular strategy took another step in the same process by enabling even use components and systems in neighboring segments.

next step in line with this trend, the new modular platform strategy largely removes the boundaries between the segments and can even use the same technology in the entire Group, on different segments and different models, s 'freeing trademarks of borders. With this approach, the number of versions of parts and systems, which necessarily results from a strict separation between models and vehicle segments, has been even more reduced than in previous stages of development. The planning and production, but also repair and maintenance, are far simpler and therefore less expensive. This simplification is reflected for example in the motor mounting position and the supports of the engine / transmission,

Electrical equipment on the modular platform MQB transverse engine If it is difficult to imagine wiring board network and the wiring harnesses as modules, a highly modular design of electrical and electronic equipment is yet technically feasible. The process of constructing the complex electronic vehicle equipment using standardized modules that can be completed ultimately facilitates troubleshooting and repair of the vehicle in the workshop. FIG among those modules, in addition to standardized electrical components, a structured network of data buses. Given the large number of computers connected to the network, the various data bus systems are presented separately in the following pages.

drive currents activate electronic relays, which then perform the switching. This has reduced the cable section from the switches and controls, and thus achieve a weight saving.

The K cable, unused to diagnose some vehicles is now absent from the Golf 2013. The communication between the reader and the diagnostic interface of the data bus (J533) is available via the CAN bus diagnosis, at a high rate. With this connection, the process of adapting the onboard electronics are more comfortable and faster.

Multiplexed data bus

Overview of data bus systems used Modern cars have a growing number of functions. Conventional functions such as engine management or regulation of the axle is to add new form of different driver assistance and information systems functions. This evolution leads to increasing complexity of the vehicle network via which the various electronic components of the vehicle communicate. The diagram below shows synthetically which bus systems are used on the 2013 Golf.

One of the novelties of the 2013 Golf is in multiplexing the multifunction steering wheel. If the J453 multifunction steering wheel calculator was previously a LIN bus slave of the electronic calculator J527 steering column, it is now an integrated LIN bus slave directly to the diagnostic interface J533 data bus. As can be seen on the multiplexing scheme, the multifunction steering wheel signals pass as before by the spiral spring and the management of electronic computer; this arrangement is however only due to technical reasons related to the wiring. It does not affect functionality.

What is the sheet resistance? When a battery eg. suffered a strong shock or other type of external influence, specific electrolyte concentrations may occur inside the battery. Due to their different molecular weight, the electrolyte concentrations can be deposited in layers, which have a negative influence on the performance level of the battery.

What resistance to alternating cycles? Resistance to alternating cycles is the number of discharges and recharges a battery can undergo before the battery power requirements are no longer met.

of driver assistance systems

The optical system OPS parking aid The Golf 2013 can be equipped with a variant of the now classic optical parking aid system (OPS), the OPS 360. The prerequisite is that the vehicle is equipped with the assistant to the latest generation of parking maneuvers (PLA) version 2.0.

The OPS 360 is a purely software function that uses the sensors of the assistant for parking maneuvers. It mobilizes for perimeter display more sensors of the parking assist system (PDC - Park Distance Control) or the assistant for parking maneuvers (PLA) as the optical system using the previous deployment. It would just represent the detection of front and / or rear of the vehicle. He used for this purpose, depending on the composition of the system, eg. PDC four sensors at the rear and four or six PDC sensors on the front. PAHO 360, he uses all sensors front and rear sensors all.

In addition to the information gathered by the PDC itself, representing 360 of the surrounding area requires the use of additional information from other vehicle systems.

34

Operation In addition to the areas at the front and rear of the vehicle, the OPS 360 is able to monitor and display the sides of the vehicle, that is to say the side areas.

The system is activated / deactivated:

Check the path! s517_720

-

When engaging reverse gear

-

When the vehicle moves back

-

When the system detects an obstacle in front of the vehicle, the latter traveling at least 10 km / h (when the vehicle enters a garage wheelchair pitch)

The display of the lateral zones is not only based on the values measured by external sensors PDC because the scope of the latter does not include directly the sides of the vehicle. In addition to the signals picked up and stored in forward and in reverse, indicating the presence of potential obstacles, the calculation includes the signals of the steering angle sensor (steering angle) and those of the ABS system (distance ). s517_035

When a contact or a collision is likely to occur in the area that is not directly covered by the sensors, for example due to an excessive deflection, a corresponding alert is sent to the driver. If the infotainment system supports this feature, the expected path of the vehicle is superimposed on PAHO's image as a semi-transparent sheath of yellow color, which shows the driver how the vehicle is likely to move.

If a door is opened while the parking aid is active, all of the corresponding lateral area is cleared. The computer is not able to determine the distance between the door and a potential obstacle because it can not measure the opening angle of the door. Similarly, if one parking aid sensor fails, it is the whole of the area (front, rear or side), which is off. A yellow exclamation point is inlaid above the area.

areas between the A and C pillars that are not covered by sensors, PDC or PAHO uses additional signals, such as the distance provided by the ABS computer and the steering angle provided by the power steering control unit.

Once the ignition on, the vehicle must travel a minimum distance between the two inner sensors PDC / PLA for all areas around the vehicle can be displayed (sequential display of lateral areas).

36

On the Golf 2013, the PDC and PAHO are configured such that below a speed of 10 - 15 km / h, the front area is constantly monitored. If the conditions mentioned below are met, the system is activated. When the vehicle comes within 95 cm, at less than 10 km / h speed, an obstacle in front of him, OPS or OPS 360 is automatically activated and the danger situation is displayed on the screen. When the distance is less than 50 cm, an acoustic warning is also issued. It is no longer necessary to operate the system using touch the E266 parking. From a speed greater than or equal to 15 km / h, PAHO 360 turns off automatically.

s517_055 If, during the maneuver of parking, the PDC detects, given the current steering angle, a risk of collision with a potential barrier in the area which is not covered by the sensors at the time, it issues a warning analogous to that of the areas covered directly by the sensors. This alert is displayed by PAHO on the infotainment system screen and accompanied by an audible signal.

37

of driver assistance systems

The signs of recognition (VZE) The traffic signs recognition system is an additional feature of the front

s517_036

camera support systems for driving R242. It detects signs, such as speed limits or overtaking bans, analyzes and compares the information already available in the navigation system. The system can display up to three panels recognized or recorded in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster and on the navigation system screen.

When mounted, is systematically multifunction camera that is the master element of the device, so it is she who decides the display.

System Limitations Like any optical device, the signs recognition system is subject to certain factors limiting recognition, such as fouling and glare.

Road signs may also be accompanied by additional panels. As additional boards are not structured according to a specific standard, unlike for example the mandatory signs, recognition is possible only with certain restrictions. The system recognizes such additional panels such as "trailering" or "wet weather". s517_037

Signs with additional panels

It then uses additional signals, such as the rain sensor or of the trailer identification device. Thus, when the system detects a normal speed limit of 100 km / h and another speed limit of 60 km / h rain, and the rain sensor indicates it rains, the priority limit of 60 km / h is displayed completely left in the multifunction display of the instrument panel.

To be recognized, the signs must comply with the European standard on the signs.

38

Operation Analysis of the images filmed is performed in the front camera to support systems driving R242. The camera checks if a given video picture has regions having a similarity with the signs stored in the system. A plausibility check is then performed to verify that the recognized panel can enroll in the given context. This control takes into account not only the detected panels but also the obligations recorded in the navigation system, road types and road layouts.

If the panel detected by the camera corresponds to the speed limit stored in the database of the navigation system data, the display in the instrument cluster and in the infotainment system is updated, after a plausibility check so as to integrate the sign concerned. While it is plausible and relevant, a sign detected enters into force; it remains until the camera detects a new panel and the applicable values from the database of the navigation system data changes, and the need to perform a new calculation or a plausibility check.

s517_041 schematic representation of the controls during the recognition of traffic signs

The traffic signs recognition system has the sole purpose of improving driver comfort.

The legal responsibility for the compliance and road bans is entirely and exclusively to the driver.

39

of driver assistance systems

Case examples of signs of recognition

When the panels detected by the optical device does not match those in the database of the navigation system data, the plausibility check carried out by the camera calculator is particularly important.

The database for example that the road taken is a secondary road on which the speed limit is 100 km / h. In the presence of jobs and an additional speed limit of 60 km / h applicable to the work area, the system detects a limit of 60 km / h, while the speed limit on work not on the basis of the navigation device.

This situation is quite common on the road network. The recognition system considers the sign detected, indicating the lowest obligation is plausible in this driving situation, and considers that the speed limit it says is now in force. The corresponding sign is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster as on the display of the infotainment system.

The object recognition process taking place in the front camera also plays an important role. If the camera detects such. that the vehicle ahead is a heavyweight, it ignores speed limits shown on the back of the truck, which apply only to the latter.

s517_056 Example of recognition of a traffic sign

40

However, if the multifunction camera detects a speed limit (eg. 100 km / h) higher than that stored in the database of the navigation system data (eg. 80 km / h), a comprehensive process control plausibility is performed, including the calculation of many cases. Such cases may eg. occur when the basic data of the navigation system is outdated.

If the vehicle is traveling on a road in the same category as that recorded in the database, a higher speed limit, eg here. speed of 100 km / h detected by the camera is quite plausible because the work could be carried out on this road, allowing an increase in the speed limit. In such cases, outdated indication of 80 km / h given by the navigation system is rejected and the limitation to 100 km / h displayed on both screens.

The navigation data may also have strong relevance in case a parallel road is located near the road where the vehicle is. In this case, the signs of the other road is not taken into consideration.

When the vehicle is traveling on a highway where traffic is regulated automatically, all speed limits detected by the camera are considered plausible and displayed on both screens.
