Description: The electric power system consists of generation, transmission and distribution. Till recently the emphasis has been very high on generation and transmission compared to distribution. But distribution system is becoming large and being stretched too far, leading to higher system losses and poor voltage regulation. These losses are reduced by placing shunt capacitors. Shunt capacitors results into number of benefits like improvement of power factor, reduction of power loss and improved voltage profile. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) based method is used to solve the capacitor placement problem in radial distribution systems. To prove the efficiency of GA approach, it is compared to the traditional method. PERSONAL SKILLS: • • • •
