Devastating Street Style of Splashing Hands

INTRODUCTION Splashing Hands Kung-Fu is a no-nonsense, lightning fast, street fighting system with simple but devastating attacks. Utilizing practical, fast hand and foot combinations, this system  will teach the novice to fight with speed and efficiency in a very short time when compared to other martial arts systems It features fast shuffling footwork and low focused kicks, combined with jabs, punches, hammer fists and elbows, thrown with such blinding speed that opponents have a difficult time dealing with the attacking onslaught! Its methods can also be a useful addition to any martial artist’s arsenal regardless of their skill level or style of practice. Splashing Hands, although considered an external martial art, uses similar martial principles as the internal a rts such as body mechanics and sensitivity. However, these techniques are generally developed slowly and in the later stages of learning this system. e basic principles governing the use of Splashing Hands in a fight are to get in as close as possible to the opponent, strike first, strike fast, strike hard and keep striking until the opponent is no longer a threat.

Unlike many martial arts systems, when fighting, Splashing Hands looks the same as  when it is practiced - there is no great conceptual leap to make between traditional practice and live application. Whether a novice or advanced martial artist, you will find the training both physically and mentally demanding. You will also find that you develop speed, power and skill quickly. When practiced correctly, and with the guidance of a qualified teacher, the Splashing Hands Kung-Fu system will keep you fit and enhance your health. It will condition and tone all the major muscle groups of the body as well as improve your cardiovascular fitness. Its training methods simultaneously trains the left and right sides of the brain and will improve your coordination, timing and proprioceptive response skills. In order to gain the maximum benefits from this unique fighting system, you must train as hard in your own as in class in order to perfect the techniques and gain competency in this rare style!

HISTORY  “Zan Shou Chuan” when translated to English becomes “Splashing Hands Fist.” Its name derives from the fact that when training in this system the hands are often open and move with such speed it is as though you were shaking water from them. It is possibly one of the last great secrets of Chinese martial arts to be revealed to the general public. ought to be developed in the late 1700’s it is completely in line w ith the contemporary street fighting theories of today. e legendary origin of Splashing Hands Kung-Fu is that it was thought to be developed for the monks whose duty it was to guard the gates at the Northern Shaolin temple in China and then Splashing Hands spread later to southern China.

Unlike many Shaolin systems, from day one it is extremely practical and uses a common sense approach to its combat applications. It resembles very little of modern Wushu and what the monks of Shaolin are seen to practice today, but contains great martial meaning. is lack of similarity with today’s Shaolin practice may be due to the change in politics of China over the last centu ry. Genuine Kung-Fu was banned by the Chinese Communist government for many years and much of the revived form (‘Wushu’) is watered down with gymnastics and dance. Furthermore, the Shaolin temple of today is no longer funded by the Chinese government, and has adapted itself to make it more marketable in order to survive in the modern economic climate.

It is thought that originally only a few monks at the temple were selected to become guardians of the gates and train in Splashing Hands. ese specially trained monks were required to act like today’s equivalent of “doormen” and therefore, had to develop fighting skill as quickly as possible. eir fighting skills were so eff ective that it is no wonder why it was kept a closely guarded secret! Due to the secrecy surrounding this highly eff ective system we do not know if it is still practised on the mainland of China today. During the Chinese peoples communist revolution, many nationalists and prominent persons including martial artists had to leave the country in exile. Many left for Taiwan and America and this is how Splashing Hands may have resurfa ced years later to the general public. As far as we know, the complete system of Splashing Hands is currently only practised by Lao Tzu James McNeil at the Little Nine Heaven Kung-Fu school in California USA, and now by several of his students, who are teaching around the world. Little Nine Heaven UK has two students authorised by Lao Tzu McNeil at present and several grand-students who are now teaching Splashing Hands in England. He also has students in the United States, Sweden, Russia and India. We genuinely hope this will increase in time and that more people will train and help spread this rare system, so it can enrich other people’s lives as it has ours.

SPLASHING HANDS HEALTH BENEFITS Long ago in China, the monks developed this system of training that simply and eff ectively elicits optimum physical performance by conditioning the body and strengthening the connection between body and mind. e exercises in Splashing Hands are known for their explosive, high-speed movements. ey enhance health and longevity by conditioning and toning all of the major muscle groups in the body, improving the cardiovascular system as well as training both the right and left sides of the brain. e mental and physical conditioning is unique. It sharpens the skills of any athlete from beginner to professional, yet is so simple to learn that men and  women can derive benefits from it immediately. e monks were so pleased and protective of their creation that they kept it a secret until the late 1950's when a former Nationalist Army general taught it to Master Haumea Lefiti, who in turn taught these exercises to James McNeil. Now, Master McNeil has decided it is time to off er the unparalleled benefits of Splashing Hands to the outside world.

Devastating Street Style of Splashing Hands

Structure External styles of Kung-Fu usually require that force and power are generated in a fast, direct and hard way. is is usually achieved via hard, physical methods of training. In Splashing Hands this is not entirely untrue as the training relies heavily on speed and raw aggression in order to defeat an opponent. However, Splashing Hands is at the softer end of the scale in terms of hard external styles. We also concern ourselves with some of the concepts classically associated  with the internal styles such as structure and alignment of our bodies and remaining relaxed with a calm mind while performing each technique. Using correct structure allows you to have the best possible opportunity of defeating your opponent. It is also a good way of leveling out the odds of two unequally matched fighters. When we refer to the word “structure”, we mean the way the body and its joints are aligned, enabling it to receive and issue force in the most stable and efficient manner. If the body has poor alignment (bad structure), the force generated in an attack will not be the person’s maximum. Likewise if the person receives force from their opponent, they will not be as stable and able to maintain the ability to absorb an attack and counter with one of their own. If the arm you are punching or blocking with is bent at the wrist then the (reaction) force that comes back to you when you hit an object will pass out of the back of the joint that is bent and into the unsupported space behind you, making you unstable and giving you the potential to lose your balance. Furthermore, if you are not balanced correctly when you deliver a strike, your power will be reduced and you will be wide open to counter attack from a strike, sweep or takedown etc. For example, if a person has poor structure when they fire a shotgun, then the recoil (reaction force) will knock them backwards. If they get their stance and structure right before they shoot, the recoil will pass along the gun into the shoulder, down the body, through the legs and into the feet and eventual ly the ground. From this you c an see that the gun’s recoil or a person’s attack could easily unbalance a person with poor structure. If you can direct the energy through yourself into the ground, it will be absorbed by the ground rather than yourself keeping you balanced and stable. To date, no person I have ever met can push the ground away! When attacking with a punch or defending with a block, the arm needs to align correctly  with all other areas of the body allowing all the power generated to flow up to the shoulder and to carry on to the opponent, or if received, to flow down and be neutralized by the ground. If you do not achieve this desired alignment then you will only harness the power from a single part of the body as opposed to the whole. In martial arts we term this as using “external strength”. If you use this method, the odds of winning are always in favor of the physically stronger, heavier and faster person.

To try and combat this, the lighter, weaker and slower person needs to structure themselves correctly to even out the odds. ey should check that every part of their body is in the correct position at every point in the technique. is is why practicing forms and techniques slowly and controlled at first is more important than rushing through the forms and techniques using only external power.

Training Methods When Splashing Hands was first created, it was created for fighting, so it is possible to train and become proficient from just practicing basic techniques. Essentially the “forms” of the system are designed so you can practice all of the techniques in a systematic manner and add more variety to your training routine. Remember Splashing Hands is essentially an external style, but it has many similarities to the softer internal styles, therefore you should always practice being structured and relaxed.  When fighting you must be able to stay sensitive so you can feel your opponent’s movements. ere is nothing wrong with spending time practicing slowly and getting he structure in the techniques correct so they stay structured and keep their power when performed at full speed. It is also extremely important to practice your forms as low as you possibly can at all times especially when you first start your training. Firstly this will build your core leg strength and sense of stability which is essential to delivering good techniques. Secondly, it is a lot harder to maintain correct posture when you are lower. For example, the lower your posture, the more exaggerated your postural defects will become. If you can maintain a correct posture when you are in a low stance, then your posture will be correct and eff ective when you stand in your natural fighting stance.

Seven Stars

is is another theory born from the internal art of Hsing-I Chuan. It describes the use of diff erent areas of the body that can be used as weapons to strike an opponent. It can be applied equally to Splashing Hands and so we have decided to include it in our syllabus.

A strike follows a certain chain of movements. It begins with the foot and follows through to every joint and ending in the hand. is creates the theory of seven stars. e seven stars are the seven points you can use to strike as a single striking entity or as a combination with each other. ey are the weapons of the human body that can attack with great power.

To strike, use all one’s inner power to move the hands and legs tog ether. Fists are as cannons, body as a dragon, alive and deadly. Move as if you have flames over your whole body in the face of an attacker.

1. Head Hit: e whole body moves as one. e feet are aligned under the body along the center line, so that  when you strike with the head the body stays centred and balanced.

2. Shoulder Hit: To eff ectively use a shoulder you must step in close to your opponent and your body must be rooted and centered to produce power. e use of either shoulder depends on the situation.

*is book will outline only a few combinations of fighting techniques for each movement. e variations of applications within the forms translated into fighting are endless like the chords in music.

3. Elbow Hit: Keeping the elbow down along the center line and coordinating it with the feet allows the body to remain balanced as the power is transferred to the opponent.

4. Hand Hit:  Moving from the chest the hands a re like a powerful tiger catching its prey. e strength in your hands should be interchangeable. Elbows low to protect the body and explode with power.

5. Hip Hit: Left or right depends on the situation, be rooted when moving the feet, be quick as lightning  when attacking with the hip.

6. Knee Hit: Knees striking against any vital point can be fatal. Always hold the hands up in front to protect and balance the body.

7. Foot Hit : Steps are firm; strength comes from one foot being rooted to the ground. Kick only with power shots to vital areas.

e

Devastating Street Style of Splashing Hands

JAB AND PUNCH Hand Techniques Along with a natural basic stance, Splashing Hands also uses the most natural fighting hand combination as the most central technique to its system. e Jab/Punch is one of the most simple and eff ective techniques to fight with because it comes most naturally to even a beginner. Keeping a technique as simple as possible means it is less likely to let you down when you are under pressure in a fight. Many martial artists look great with fancy techniques in the training room, but put them under pressure in a real situation and most cannot apply them eff ectively. Remember when you fight, you are in the real world not the movies and if you make a mistake you don’t get a “take two!” Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) and you will not only survive, but also succeed. When practicing Splashing Hands think of the Jab/Punch combination as the most basic and eff ective method of attacking and defending. When in doubt, Jab/Punch. is combination can be used to block or attack using all the possible angles when combined with appropriate footwork. Other moves often derive from this one combination technique. e various “Shuffles” or “Close e Gaps” are just diff erent ways of moving the body to apply the Jab/Punch combination to diff erent situations. is is why you drill the same move over and over ag ain. You must first master all the possible ways of using the Jab/Punch combination in its simplest form and  with correct structure before you can experiment using more difficult and complicated hand and foot combinations.

You may ask, what are the benefits for slapping yourself? 1. Improves eye-hand coordination. 2. Improves timing 3. Condition the body. 4. Increase speed and power in your punch.
