MASTER OF QI MEN Zhuge Liang was born in Yangdu County, Langya Commandery, which is in present-day Yishui, Shandong. He was raised by his uncle Zhuge Xuan and later lived in Jing Province, which was governed by Liu Biao. A great statesman and an even better strategist, Zhuge Liang made his name synonymous with wisdom and strategic prowess. However, he rose to even greater prominence when he linked up with Liu Bei.

One legend has it that Zhuge Liang invented the Chinese steamed bun, or “mantou” which means barbarian’s head. He created the mantou after a battle against Meng Huo, the barbarian king, in the southern region of China.
Zhuge Liang and the Shu army had to cross a dangerous, swift-flowing river. He was advised that he needed to offer the heads of 50 men to appease the river spirit. Instead of sacrificing human lives, he placed cow and horse meat inside the steamed buns – shaped like human heads - and threw them into the river.
Zhuge Liang also was believed to have supernatural powers because of his abilities to harmonize with natural forces and to come up with creative solutions in the midst of danger. In The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he is most well-known for “borrowing the east wind”, a strategy he employed by correctly predicting the change in wind direction. With the change, he was able to assist General Zhou Yu in launching a successful charge against their enemy’s naval blockade.
