South Africa Vocabulary

Terms are in blue. Definitions of the terms are in boxes. We will use 3 columns:

1. Afrikaner The first large group of Europeans to settle in South Africa were were Dutch. Dutch. They came came to farm. German settlers joined the Dutch in South Africa.

 As generations passed, these immigrants no longer viewed themselves as Europeans. South Africa Africa was their homeland. Separated from Europe, their language changed but still sounded sounded a lot like Dutch and and German. German. They called themselves Afrikaners and called their language  Afrikaans.

 An ethnic group is not just a race or nationality.

Two people can both be Chinese and still have different ethnic groups.

China actually has 56 different ethnic groups.

South Africa has 4 main Black ethnic groups, 2 main White ethnic groups, and 1 main Asian ethnic group.
