Performance Notes Sound the Trumpet was written by the great English Baroque composer Henry Purcell in 1694, the year before his death. An ode (birthday tribute) to England’s Queen Mary II, it was performed on April 30th for her 32nd birthday and prior to her own death later that year. It was originally written for two countertenors (males who sing in falsetto approximately an octave higher than the normal male voice range) and continuo (harpsichord).

Ille for gal on to p sc r ree int n u or c se op on y ly I have chosen to raise the key of this edition and arrangement to E-flat major from the original D-major because voices, particularly young treble voices, produce a better and more natural tone in E-flat. Additionally, the keyboard/continuo part has been re-written to give support to the vocal parts, unlike the original, which sometimes competes with the voices.

The other minor changes made should assist in rehearsal and performance, particularly with younger voices who have had limited training. I hope you enjoy this great piece of music!
