On the 17th of February we lost a good friend and founding GGG member, Zach Seib. With news that shocked us all, his father let me know that he had passed away from a heart attack. He was 34 years old. Zach played in all of our groups games, never missing a session of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, a game of Apocolypse, or his 40k roleplaying that he was Games Master for. He had a great attitude, that showed when he was gaming and would talk for hours about what he wanted to do with the games he was involved in. He became a great friend to all of us, and we will miss him.

Autumn is my favourite season. Perfect weather for painting and gaming.. Don’t forget to start getting those items together that you want to sell or trade in the Swap Meet this month. Once again the date is Saturday, 22nd of this month at BattleStation Ipswich. See Nate at BattleStation to book a table half or whole with $10 per table or $6 per table half. Vendors need to be there by 1030hrs for 1100hrs

start. The swap meet will run until 1500hrs. Oldhammer is drawing more and more attention as it promotes third edition Warhammer Fantasy primarily, but pretty much any OOP miniature has appeared on the page. The site is overseen by James Taylor in the U.K. Lots of great stuff and I urge you to check it out. Search for Oldhammer Group on Facebook, and hop on and join and upload pictures of your old miniatures. I’ve had to make ongoing adjustments to the calendar over the next few issues so please make note of the changes. This was due to a change in my roster at work and should only have a minor impact on the dates for WFRP. Apologies for this. Games Workshop sees the release of their Titan Knight ranges tomorrow, designed to combat the Ork Stompa, the Imperial Guard Baneblade, the Necron Tesseract Vault, and the Chaos Lord of Skulls. This will add to the Escalation expansion of the 40k rules. Rumors are that they will be priced at

$155, so cheaper than the some of the other kits. I’m getting one...but who wouldn’t? Other news is that BattleStation Ipswich is moving. For those of you familiar with the streets of Ipswich the new location will be at the Old Flour Mill, on the same street and just down the road. Nate is expanding, opening a new store at Highfields near Toowoomba. The Ipswich store will be managed by two competent persons, Nate tells me. The GGG Mordheim campaign starts in late April so for those who are interested, start putting your warbands together. Let me know if you need any sheets or have any rule queries. As usual, send your submissions in to: Garagegamersgroup @gmail.com and put Editor in the subject line.

Mordheim Box Set Mordheim is a skirmish game; set 500 years before the current time in the Warhammer world, where opposing factions fight in the ruins of a once-great city. Mordheim, once a great city capital of the Empire's most northern realm, was slowly enveloped by corruption. The only beacon of hope and sanity in Mordheim was the Convent of the Sisterhood of Sigmar. Weeks before the end of the year 1999, the symbol of

The Wargaming Compendium I buy a lot of books from the book depository. They’re cheaper than buying in a local bookstore and postage is free to your door. I had heard of Henry Hyde, as he is the publisher of a Wargaming magazine that I regularly read. I have also seen references to the ‘Wargaming Compendium’. Then while trolling through the available books at the book depository, I came across the compendium for sale. I liked the fifty five dollar price

tag as the book appeared quite large, but I did ask myself the question, “What does this Henry Hyde know about gaming that I don’t already know?” So I sent off my order and not more than a week later the book arrived at my door. On opening the book I found the answer to my question above was immediately answered. “Everything”...this book is packed to the seams with everything you would ever need to know about any sort of wargam-

ing. It’s print is set at a style that will take me weeks to read which to me is value for money right there, and if I had any negatives to say about the Wargaming Compendium is that it’s too heavy to read in bed, especially if you’re prone to dozing in the middle of a read. This book will knock you out. Anyway I fully recommend this book to all gamers.

“There are many gaming systems out there...all you

have to do is find one that

Painting is a necessary chore but stripping... if you want the cheaper miniatures off ebay or from your friend that lost with his army five times in a row and has become very dissatisfied with it and is now willing to sell it really cheaply...well then sooner or later you will have to strip a miniature or miniatures. There are various ways to approach this task. There are quite a lot of paint strippers out there that are great for metal but will melt your plastic miniature in two minutes. Given that the range of plastic miniatures now on the

market is huge, then you will need to consider a stripper that is friendly to both metal and plastic.

I don’t know whether it’s the Chloroxylenol, Pine Oil or Isopropanol that takes the paint off, but overnight in Dettol for that miniature and the paint comes off like a glob of soft soap. You will have to wash in a detergent mixture after but you will smell nice.

Other things to remember is that you have a well ventilated area, and somewhere that the excess can be disposed of in a safe manner. Also note that when cleaning the miniatures after stripping the paint is that your area is either covered to stop the flecks of old paint sticking to walls, or in an area where the odd fleck of old paint won’t be noticed. Don’t forget to use gloves. My favourite is good old Dettol.

suits you”

Non Acetone Nail Polish remover works well on plastics but may require a soft brush (old toothbrush) to scrape off in the crevices. Simply Green is the other product I would recommend. It’s available as a general cleaner. Good luck.

From the Collector’s Vault I have a friend who collects StarWars figures. You know, the three and a quarter inch ones. If you keep the figures in their original packaging, they’re supposed to make a lot more money when the figures are in mint condition...that is, like new. I know of another fellow who buys two of everything. One gets opened and played with, the other joins a stack of similar boxes and blisters in his

shed. Now gaming figures don’t become any more valuable unless they are at least ten years out of production, or were a rare release (like Necromunda Spyrer Matriarch & Patriarch) to begin with. This is only important if you are going to sell them in that condition. My StarWars friend chose to rip his figures out of the boxes and display them all over his house. SNAKE

4

So collectables ARE good, only if you are going to sell them at some stage. The things I have still in boxes are there because I haven’t yet found the time to break them out, build, paint and play with them. Collectable OOP miniatures are only going to attract 50% to the maximum of what you originally paid, so rip them open and play with them now, that’s my advice. EYES

What’s In The box BOOK On the previous page I showed an article about Henry Hyde’s the Wargaming Compendium. The moment I saw this book I had to have it. Its over 500 pages of everything from the history of Wargames, to terrain making, what scale you can choose from, where to get these items from, how to play, what period to choose from, and illustrated beautifully with pictures of games in action.

I had the opportunity to interview Margaret Weis of TSR Dragonlance fame and many other projects, this week. Following some research, I created a short list of questions and presented them to her. The e-interview went as follows:

NC - Wikipedia credits your initial interest in Fantasy was sparked by Tolkien. What did you think of the Peter Jackson movies? MW - I saw the first movie and I really disliked it because Peter Jackson made a significant change in the movie from

the book. The change had to do with a scene that had always moved me as a reader and inspired me as a writer. I did not go to see the rest.

NC - Tracey Hickman had others involved in the idea of Dragonlance before you were involved. How is it that you and Tracy became the main authors of this fantasy series? MW - That’s a long and complex story which we will be sharing over the months during this 30th anniversary period

on the Dragonlance Legacy Facebook page. Come join us!

NC - In 1999 Pyramid magazine named Margaret Weis as one of “The Millennium's Most Influential Persons, at least in the realm of adventure gaming." I don't doubt the accolade, but are you comfortable with that title? MW - Well, it beats “Approachable” which is what Gen Con once called me.:)

NC - Dragonships of Vindras was the last trilogy of books listed as having you and Tracy Hickman co-authoring. Do you have any plans to write again with Tracy in the future? MW - Tracy and I are working on the fourth book in that series, Doom of the Dragon.

NC - In the original Dragonlance Chronicles, who created the characters portrayed? MW - When I arrived on the scene, all we had for the characters were their stats and some wonderful paintings by the

artists. Tracy and I brought them to life, with the help of our friends (like Michael Williams, Jeff Grubb, Doug Niles).

NC - What was your favourite series, and who would you say was your favourite character? MW - Star of the Guardians is my favorite series. Raistlin is my favorite character.

NC - I loved Dragonlance, but was surprised at the future of the main characters. Was this decided initially or during writing the series? MW - We knew the future of some, such as Sturm and Raistlin. The others developed as we went along.

NC - With 'Firefly' RPG, are you planning further modules for this or is it a stand alone book? MW - There will be adventure modules and supplements. I can’t wait!

NC - What's in the pipeline for Margaret Weis Productions in the future? MW - Ah, I really don’t want to have to kill you . . . :)

Dark Heresy

is a role playing game set in the grim darkness of the 41st

millennium , the decaying dark future of Warhammer 40,000. Below is the continuing background story of Bekki Imam, GGG member Simon Machins’ character in Dark Heresy, continued from last 2 issues. Sister Krankies diaries Part 3 My name is Bekki Imam, I am an Acolyte of the Handmaidens of the Emperor, an Adepta Sororitas.

Our scanner let us know that more pirates were inbound. We prepared an ambush. The pirates sent a combat servitor at the forefront of their force to eradicate us. Grim trauma shot the servitor with a priceless headshot, destroying the servitors brain and disabling it immediately. Brawn, the Commander and I opened fire on the remaining pirates, killing two as the rest fanned out. I charged the corridor and assaulted them. They broke from my attacks, as Brawn joined me, and we chased the pirates back to an open bulk head door. The cowards ran through and locked the bulkhead behind them. Brawn was pleased with himself he tells me that "Sister fights well. Sky-god has blessed me.”

I used my data slate to thank him and ask him to open the door. He plants his feet, grabbed the door in his ham fisted hands, and with an amazing feat of strength, rips the door off the hinges. A pirate stands at the far end of the corridor, the fear visible in his eyes. I don't hesitate and charge him. I hit him so hard with my flail he literally explodes, painting the walls around us in gore. Brawn and I then go back to the lift and wait. I prayed to the Emperor. I realized that I was enjoying the killing too much. I pray fervently, and punish myself. I immediately feel a weight lift off my soul . The commander yells that more enemies are coming from the vents. He is in the service command room, trying to get the lift to function. The pirates are trying to do the same it seems. Our scanner indicted they were trying to outflank us at the vents, we positioned ourselves for another ambush. We waited and as the scum entered the sector through the vents, we opened fire. The pirates never had a chance, killed where they entered, falling back into the ventilation shafts or to drape like bloodied rags over the vent entrance. The rest again dispersed like the cowards they are. Our squad repositions and checks the sector. I leave Grim Trauma to his work in disposing of the bodies. He is a twisted creature, if it wasn't for the Inquisitors directives in keeping him alive I would have let him die several times by now. He has a sickness in him that he wears as a second skin. He positively exudes an aura of wrongness around him. I suspect that I could never like him no matter what he does. The Emperor must have plans for him. I spend my time praying again, asking the Emperor for protection and guidance. I hear no words and yet I become refreshed and invigorated once again. The Emperor is with me.

The Commander informs us some time later that the pirates have taken control of the service elevator and we should expect more enemies soon. We position ourselves in formation around the lift. The pirates appear once more, and we destroy every one of them. Brawn, the Commander, myself and Grim Trauma make another heroic stand. I note that Brawn takes up a defensive stance near me whenever we fight. He is a simple man, a brute. Strong, tough and very resilient. After the battle Brawn and I talk. I ask him of his faith in the Emperor. He replies with a distorted and slightly heretical view of the Emperor. He refers to him as the Sky-god, and he tells me his tribe gained the knowledge of the Emperor through the

SNAKE

7

EYES

teachings of an Adeptus Astartes Chaplain no less. Apparently the Astartes ship crash landed on his planet, and the Chaplain was the sole survivor. Brawn’s tribe found the Chaplain and helped him. He in turn taught them of the Emperor. The tribe view of the Emperor is distorted by the Astartes version. I know of the differences. The Astartes revere the Emperor differently to us mortals. During the conversation I had an insight and resolved to follow it up. I will endeavour to convert Brawn and the squad to the true teachings of the Emperor. I pray once again to the Emperor and asks him to bless my weapon. The weapon glows slightly and I know he is with me. I get Brawn to pray with me and I mark him with the imperial eagle motif. He is proud to be blessed by me.

We decided to enter the sealed section of our current sector to ensure no more enemies try to outflank us. We search and find a darkened room. The room stinks of warp madness. Brawn and myself enter but cannot stay. A warp echo lay upon the room. The room contained a mummified astropath that used markings on the floor as wards of protection. He had obviously been assaulted by warp entities. Grim Trauma entered the room and the madness dissipates around him. I understood then why Grim was so very important to the Inquisition. He is a rare pyschic blank.

I am determined to cleanse the madness. I enlist Brawns help and we take a barrel of oil we found earlier and we set it on fire in the dark room. Fire cleans and purifies. We leave that section. The rest of the squad from the lower level moves up to our level and we continue searching for any remaining enemies. We get a communication from the fleet. An Ensign has gone missing and we are given orders to find him and rescue him. We enter the bad section and exit that section into the next sector, finding the next even more disturbing. We find a room full of blood that is psychically active. Once again, Grim Trauma shows his unique skills by making the blood move away from him. The squad spreads out. We realise that we are not alone in here. The Commander suddenly calls out and we rush to her aid. A entity from the warp is here. It attacked her but we scared it off. That is to say that Grim scared it off. His blankness is a boon. I start to understand him. He is a product of his aura, and his aura makes us distrust him. He is the creature he is today because he was never loved and he never found the Emperors light. He is now a blunt instrument to be let loose on those that defy the Emperors servants. I make a decision to try to befriend him after all, but it will be difficult. The best I can foresee is a mutual respect. I will continue regardless, the Emperor protects.

By using Grim Trauma’s aura we corner the warp shade. Using my faith in the Emperor I stuck a mighty blow and banished the fiend back to the warp. I immediately prostrate myself and pray to the Emperor thanking him for his divine powers of protection. I ask Brawn to pray with me, and again bless Brawn and my weapon. I knew our trials on this warp infested ship had only just begun. We continue on to the next area, leaving the warp stink to evaporate in our trail. Of the Ensign, there was yet no sign.

Members Gallery GGG member Glen Taylor, shows off some ‘Ye Olde’ Chaos figures from the early edition of Warhammer Fantasy. He has also posted these on a Facebook page called ‘Oldhammer’. Glen has tons of figures so it is good to get to see some of his pictures. It’s really worth a look at the Oldhammer group page for an idea of what was around in miniatures back then, or maybe for you it might just be a nostalgic stroll down memory lane. On the pages following are a selection of miniatures from the Editors cabinet, highlighting Necromunda, WH40k followers of Nurgle, Blood Angels and an old Rogue Trader survivor. The Necromunda Gangers were painted by Simon Mayes with Humbrol paints. He charged $2 per figure

and it was worth every cent. Glen apologised for the blur on the one above, but it’s good enough for me...

RIVERHORSE GAMES Founder and Games Designer Alessio Cavatore and GGG member, tells us more about his game site creations...

Shuuro is the core of a new system of abstract war gaming, where you are in command of armies of chess pieces. Differently from traditional chess, you are not forced to field a given set of pieces on the board, but can choose which pieces to field, based on your skill and tactical preferences. The innovative gaming board features terrain elements that change position every time you play, so that each game introduces a different challenge. Shuuro is a game for two players, which merges the precision and rigour of chess with the creativity and variety of war-gaming. It does so by attaching a points value to each traditional chess piece and allowing the players to spend a predetermined amount of these points (say, a total of 800 points) to select the chess ‘army’ that they think makes the best use of the points. This creates a feeling of ‘ownership’ towards the particular combination the player thinks is the most effective. The ‘battle’ will then take place on a large chess board of twelve by twelve squares. This board, however, also introduces a new and unique element to the game. Each of the four six-by-six quadrants of the board contains two plinths that block the movement of the pieces. These plinths are placed randomly at the beginning of every game with the help of a dice, ensuring that every game will be different and present unique challenges. The plinths also help in balancing the game, restricting the movement of Queens, Bishops and Rooks, while at the same time allowing Knights to land onto them and using them as defensive positions (as only an enemy Knight can take them while they’re there). It is worth noting that game box also includes a normal chessboard and full rules for traditional chess, making it good to learn chess and allowing players to engage in this great classic as well as the innovative Shuuro.

LOKA is a fantastically sculpted Chess sets and a brand new take on playing Chess, brought to you by River Horse. LOKA is played with fantasy-inspired Chess pieces, each evoking the powerful imagery of one of the four elements. At its heart, LOKA uses the rules of Chess, and Alessio has some significant twists in mind in the form of new mechanics: Choose your army - Each player get to choose which pieces they put onto the board, meaning both players command different armies on the battlefield – do you field a small but elite force with three Queens, or do you go for a mass horde of Pawns? Fantasy Scenery – Change the shape of the battlefield with movement blocking terrain that alters the path you’ll take into combat. Dice Driven Combat – a simple and elegant system using eight sided dice adds some unpredictability to combat, placing extra emphasis on strategy and positioning as pieces build in power with support from their comrades."

X-Wing All In Last week while some of the fellows were over, we set up a game of Star Wars X-Wing. The four of us, Simon, Courtney, Steven and myself rolled a single die each to determine who would go first in picking their ships, with a twist. Simon won the roll. I then picked an Imperial and a Rebel movement counter and held one in each hand. Simon then picked a hand. He and Courtney after him both guessed hands holding the Rebel Fleet counters, leaving Steven and I with the Imperial ones. Then we flipped the movement counters over so that we all had to choose, in the same order of dice rolling, what ships we would be controlling. Most ships in the StarWars X-Wing game come with the option of four different pilots all with their own skills depending on their experience.

Simon picked an X-Wing with Wedge Antillies as the pilot and a Y-Wing piloted by Horton Salm. Courtney randomly selected the X-Wing piloted by Luke Skywalker and the Rebel freighter piloted by Kyle Katarn. Steven picked the Tie Bomber and Slave 1 with pilots Major Rhymer & Boba Fett and I flipped my random picks to reveal an Advanced Tie Fighter piloted by Soontir Fel and the Lambda Class Shuttle with Captain Kagi as the pilot. We took no extra cards for these with the exception of Steven taking bombs for the bomber to which everyone agreed. It was in a surprisingly quick succession that my Advanced Tie Fighter, and Simons two ships were taken out quite early in the game. The Imperium’s uncertainty of how good might Wedge

Antillies be, painted a “Kill Now” target on Simon’s ships. I think it was only the Lambda Class shuttles high resilience that allowed it to survive the center of the playing field, as it too took a lot of damage after Soonter Fel Tie Interceptor exploded. Steven’s Slave 1 was not slow in taking hits and dishing out the damage either. Courtney’s Rebel Freighter and Steven’s Tie Bomber were the next two gone, leaving only three ships on the table. My Lambda Class was too far away and struggled to get back into the final fight. That left Slave 1 and Luke Skywalker to fight it out. Would Steve’s obsessive love of all things Star Wars, win out against Courtney’s love of Luke Skywalker? With smoke pouring from it’s damaged hull and into the void, it was Slave 1 who’s gunfire took the last piece of material that was holding the X-Wing together. Courtney’s last ship was destroyed. The Imperium had won the day. SNAKE

Zach Seib 30.09.79 - 17.02.14 I first met Zach in April 2013, when my gaming group was recruiting players for Fantasy Roleplay. My son, Darian had said that he had a friend from work who was very keen to play. When Zach came over that day, for someone both new to the group and to Fantasy roleplay, he just slotted in with the other gamers like he had always been there. He quickly became a firm friend of the group. If something funny was to happen in roleplay it usually happened to Zach. I smile as I remember how in going through the underground sewers of a particular town, that he was the first to fall into the sewage. Another time when fighting a vampire on a riverboat, Zach jumped into the hold from the deck of the riverboat to challenge the vampire, only to slip on the face of that boats captain that the vampire had ripped off, and begin the fight on his back. He loved playing his character in the game, and became a focal point in every session that was to follow. Zach also loved the ideal of fantasy roleplay and never missed a session of gaming since that first day. We supported his decision to Games master a different type of roleplay on the opposite weekends, where his games became so popular that sessions sometimes ran into the early hours of the next day. Zach was loud and he was opinionated, but it was all about gaming, that Zach was so loud and opinionated about. He was very passionate about gaming. Zach’s character in Warhammer fantasy roleplay was that of a Noble, and Zach played his character enthusiastically and encouraged the others to do the same. His character was compassionate, empathetic, strong, creative, a leader, and he never backed down when presented with a challenge. It was as I came to know him better was that Zach was playing himself. He was the same Noble that he played as a character. He was too young to go away, and he will be missed very much by all of us.

Members Spotlight - Courtney Halverson I started gaming in 2008 when I moved to Australia from New Zealand. My first army were Warhammer Fantasy Dark Elves. I won my first battle against Lizardmen. My brother in law was my influence for table top gaming and my introduction to Fantasy, Mordhiem and a taste of Warhammer 40k. My second Fantasy army were Beastmen. I also started playing Mordheim and began collecting Mordhiem warbands. These were Dark Elves, Dwarf Treasure Hunters and Beastmen. My table top gaming quietened, until I found my way into the Garage Gamers Group through my friend, Simon Machin. I then had a full intro into Warhammer 40k.

I play Apocolypse, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and 40k Roleplay, with GGG, as well as the occasional boardgame and Star Wars X-Wing. I was also introduced to Necromunda and am fielding an Esher gang. I have a 3000 point Ogre army for Warhammer Fantasy and my sister is currently painting up a smaller 1500 point Skaven army for me. I’m currently working on an Ork army for 40k. Future projects have me looking into building a Chaos Space Marine army. As I am also into the remote control hobby I will be attempting to create an Imperial Guard Valkyrie that actually flies.
