Present Simple vs Present Progressive

The Present Simple is used: • for actions we do every day or actions which are repeated regularly. e.g. I send e-mails to my friends every week. • for permanent situations. e.g. My father works in a hospital. We use the Past Progressive and the Past Simple in the same sentence when one action that was happening in the past was interrupted by another. We use the Past Progressive for the longer action and the Past Simple for the shorter action. In this case, we usually use when + Past Simple. e.g. Jenny was watching TV when her parents arrived home.
