FOREWORD This dictionary is meant as a supplement to the conventionstandard works of reference. It contains many hundreds of words and expressions that have either been completely omitted from the "regular" dictionaries or that are listed by them under a different meaning; for the first group, see appendix a), while for the second group appendix b) contains a number of"" examples. al,
Our collection includes the following types of entries in particular: Words that actually are part of slang, covering also soldiers' terms, students' expressions and thieves' cant e.g.

Dialect words covering some of the most commonly heard regional expressions such as: loffio crummy, cheap la madamina the young lady mica, minga not the girl friend la morosa pignolo fussy, technical lo scugnizzo the loafer il toso "the lad, guy Since this is not intended to be a scientific study but a practical manual, no attempt has been made to distinguish each entry as to its "level" or to classify dialect terms according to their region of origin; this is rather difficult -- in certain cases quits impossible. .About twenty years ago, words such rs f esso and pignolo would have been considered as southern dialect; today, they are not even slang, just popular terms understood wherever Italian is spoken. The same may be said about ramazza and to so which are of northern origin but now are popular all over the country, with the possible exception of the regions south of Rome.

Since the dialects of Sicily and Sardinia are little known to the average Italians, they have been completely disregarded Minor differences in the pronunciation in this collection. tusa for tosa or sciur for scior have as calare, such c ala for not been~recorded~"either as they would be of no interest to the general reader. In order to make this collection as useful as possible, a number of modern terms have been included that are still missing from most other dictionaries:

It should be kept in mind that in some cases, the transla"Par le corntion is not liter but rather a loose version, ette" has the sam e purpose as touching wood «*- that is to avert bed luck. a. Ithough the underlying beliefs m;ay differ, "La camporella c ould be defined as a lovers' lame for pedestrians or owners of a bike -- nevertheless when reading a passage where the re spective word may occur, we would understand what the author m eans. Soo also la soaramangla. la 200fila, etc.

Finally a word of warning: Don't try to use any word found in this dictionary unless you have read or heard it so many times that you are quite sure it would not be considered as a social blunder or otherwise out of place, Besides, certain terms such as grass o d' arrosto or baraonda sound rather funny if pronounced with even the slightest foreign accent; slangy and folksy expressions require the proper intonation more than standard phrases do, and the reader should be satisfied to understand them 'ithout using them himself. i
One more thing: usually, this dictionary lists one meaning of a, word only; for its other uses, standard reference works should be consulted. Examples to the point are grattare , il risotto and il. barbone . Of this latter word, here we have not recorded the meanings of "the bearded man" and "the poodle", just the popular use for "bum, loafer, tramp."
