Introduction Side pocket mandrels Years of practical field experience, coupled with extensive research and development programs, have made Camco gas lift systems the world’s most widely used and dependable. Camco gas lift systems consist of an extensive and versatile product line that efficiently and economically meets the oilfield’s demanding needs. In addition to over 50 different types of Camco gas lift valves and a variety of subsurface control devices, Schlumberger manufactures and markets the most technologically advanced line of side pocket mandrels available. The original side pocket mandrel was introduced in 1954. It featured a pocket that served as the receiver for a wide variety of retrievable subsurface control devices. Today, after continual research and development, the Camco G series side pocket mandrels incorporate the most advanced features on the market. Expanding on the innovative, original design, the G series mandrels include an orienting sleeve, a tool discriminator, and a solid pocket that can be forged or machined.

Applications The Camco retrievable side pocket subsurface control accessories meet a variety of application requirements. Equalizing dummy valves equalize tubing and casing pressures and prevent communication between the tubing and the casing. Some equalizing dummy valves can also be used to circulate fluid before the valves are retrieved from the side pocket mandrel. Dummy valves without equalization capabilities are also available.

Selection Guide for Camco Side Pocket Mandrels Schlumberger simplifies selection of the appropriate Camco side pocket mandrel by designating most of the special features of each model in the mandrel nomenclature. The letter K at the beginning of a mandrel nomenclature designates a K-series mandrel that receives 1-in. [25.4-mm] OD retrievable side pocket valves and accessories. An M at the beginning of a mandrel nomenclature designates an M-series mandrel that receives 11⁄2-in. [38.1-mm] OD retrievable side pocket valves and accessories. In addition, there are four design types, indicated by the letters G, A, M, and T, and three design features—E, EC, and U—that denote Camco mandrels for specific applications. Design variations, indicated by letters and numerals following the hyphen in the nomenclature, are available for more specialized mandrel functions. With this extensive range of mandrel types, Schlumberger can offer mandrels to suit a wide variety of well completions.

Basic design types ■

G—The letter G refers to the most technologically advanced Camco mandrel design and indicates three innovative mandrel features: – An orienting sleeve that provides precise alignment and insertion of side pocket devices into the mandrel side pocket – A forged tool discriminator that guides the side pocket devices into the mandrel pocket and deflects larger tools into the tubing bore

Side Pocket Mandrels

– An integral forged pocket, or a solid pocket in some mandrels, that allows higher test pressures in G-series mandrels than in other mandrel designs. ■

A—The letter A refers to the A-latching profile in the MT TRU-GUIDE* mandrel series. The A profile will accept Camco RAstyle latches. M—The letter M refers to a costeffective mandrel design featuring an orienting sleeve and a tubularstyle discriminator pocket configuration. The mandrel features less welding but OD and ID configurations that are equal to the G-series mandrels. T—The letter T indicates a TRU-GUIDE series high-pressure, round mandrel design.

Design features for special applications The following letter designations are used to signify mandrels for special applications where injected gas does not follow the standard path: ■ E—The letter E indicates that the mandrel, used primarily in chamber lift applications, does not have ports in the mandrel pocket for communication with the tubing. Instead, the mandrel has an exhaust port at the bottom of the side pocket. This port is extended downward into the casing annulus through a 1⁄2-in. [12.7-mm] pipe connected to the top packer of a chamber lift installation. In gas lift applications, highpressure gas injected into the casing annulus flows through the ports in the side of the mandrel, through the

ports in the gas lift valve, and down through the exhaust port. EC—The letters EC indicate that the mandrel, used in annular lift applications, features a snorkel that functions as an exhaust port. Located at the bottom of the mandrel pocket, the snorkel extends down into the casing annulus. The holes in the mandrel pocket communicate directly with the tubing. In gas lift applications, high-pressure gas injected into the tubing flows through the ports between the packing bores in the mandrel pocket, through the ports in the gas lift valve, down through the snorkel, and into the casing. U—The letter U indicates that the mandrel has a reduced OD and ID to permit installation in dualstring completions or heavyweight casing. In 31⁄2-in. [88.9-mm] KBUG mandrels, however, only the OD is reduced. This feature is available only in K-series mandrels.

Specialized design variations Other design variations may be requested for side pocket mandrels. These specialized products will carry a new nomenclature designation added to the mandrel name. Common design variations and their nomenclature designators are listed below. Contact your local Schlumberger representative to request specialized side pocket mandrel designs. ■ 2—The numeral 2 indicates that the mandrel has a slightly reduced OD and a fully open ID. Most mandrels with this designation have a reduced test pressure.

1

2

3—The numeral 3 indicates that special consideration must be given to thread selection. The complete line of standard end connections may not be applicable, or the mandrel may be specially designed for heavyweight end connections. 4—The numeral 4 indicates that the ends of the mandrel are lengthened to accommodate the remachining of connecting threads. 5—The numeral 5 indicates that the mandrel has integral guard devices to protect chemical injection conduits being run simultaneously with the mandrel. 6—The numeral 6 indicates that the mandrel has special extended ends that provide room for tubing tongs. 9—The numeral 9 indicates a special pocket design for KBUG series mandrels. This variation accepts bottom-latch valves only.

10—The numeral 10 designates no mandrel pocket porting to the casing annulus. This design, typically for the MMG series, allows a pressure-temperature-memory gauge to be installed without the tubing restrictions normally encountered when conventional memory gauges are installed using a landing nipple. LTS—The letters LTS indicate that the mandrel has an integral connection, typically a 1⁄8-in. [3.2-mm] NPT box, that accepts an injection conduit, typically with a 1⁄4-in. [6.4-mm] OD, extending from the surface wellhead connection. LTS mandrels are used when two or more fluids are injected into the well and must be kept separate until they are commingled in the flow stream. This type of installation leaves the annulus free for other production uses. In chemical-injection applications, injected chemicals enter the mandrel pocket through the injection conduit and flow through the chemical injection valve and into the tubing.

Please use this nomenclature summary as an aid to determine which Camco side pocket mandrels will most effectively suit specific needs. However, when choosing any product for a specific installation, well characteristics, completion requirements, and many other factors must be taken into consideration. It is also important to note that the mandrel nomenclature indicates only principal features. A mandrel may include additional features that, for simplicity, are not referred to in the nomenclature. For complete details on features and performance capabilities, refer to specific mandrel information on the following pages, or contact your Schlumberger representative.

MMG-2 series The numeral 2 indicates the mandrel has a slightly reduced OD and a fully open ID. Most mandrels with this designation have a reduced test pressure.

MMG-LTS series The letters LTS indicate the mandrel has an integral connection extending from the surface wellhead connection. This standard connection is a 1⁄8-in. [3.2-mm] NPT box that accepts a 1⁄4-in. [6.4-mm] OD injection conduit. LTS mandrels are used when two or more fluids being injected into the well must be kept separate until they are commingled in the flow stream. In this type of installation, the LTS mandrel leaves the annulus free for other production uses. In chemicalinjection applications, injected chemicals enter the mandrel pocket through the injection conduit, flow through the chemical injection valve, and into the tubing.

Kickover Tools Introduction The Camco kickover tool and Merla* selector tool are run into the well using standard slickline methods. When the locating finger of the tool contacts the stop in the orienting guide sleeve in the mandrel, the kick spring pivots the lower section of the tool, the running tool, and valve into the kicked-over position. The orienting guide sleeve in the mandrel assures correct installation. Once the slickline device is installed, a shear pin in the finger housing and the release plunger assembly is sheared, permitting the tool to be returned to the surface.

Running procedure In the running procedure, the valve, latch, and kickover/selector tool are made up onto the slickline tool string and lowered through the tubing until the tool is below the selected mandrel (Fig. A). The kickover/selector tool is slowly raised through the tubing until the finger on the tool contacts the orienting sleeve slot and stops. Tension is placed on the slickline tool string by pulling until the tool releases and kicks over (Fig. B). The tools are then lowered until a loss of weight indicates that the tool has located the side pocket of the mandrel. Downward jarring drives the valve and latch into the side pocket mandrel (Fig.C). Upward jarring shears a pin in the latch and releases the running tool from the valve and latch (Fig. D). The tool string can then be retrieved from the well.
