Description

Shrimp School

SHRIMP SCHOOL, the first of its kind organized by BL Trade Links i s headed by Sanghamitra Nayak. Sangha mitra has more than 10 years of research related experience in aqua ind ustry with focus in Biotechnology and Probiotics and lately finished Ph.D in Kassetsart University, under Dr Chalor Limsuwan. Shrimp School concept was planned and desig ned for the shrimp industry and to keep this industry sustainab le over the period of time to come in future. Shrimp Industry inception in Indi a was in late 80’s with few MNC’s coming to the industry due to the high export value of the shrimp. Since then and now Shrimp Industry has undergone several ups and downs and revolutionary changes with PL prices soaring as high as TWO rupees and lack of proper infrastructure bu t still great crop in early 90’s until the industry was hit by the dreaded white spot disease. Revolution and education for better and healthy crop introduction of chemicals, antibiotics and use of pesticides for controlling pathogens and carriers led the i ndustry to grow with demand of shrimp in western countries increasing and the hub of the shrimp industry confi ned to South East Asia. Diseases in any livestock industry have been the biggest challenge for continued and sustainable crop. The same has been the biggest challenge for shrimp industry’s growth but farmers started living with the problems and how to survive and have a successful crop. Economic slowdown in west had a great i mpact on the shrimp industry where peopl e in the west decided to eat less and reduce their debts, exports slowed down and India became non-competitive as black tiger shrimp production prices is higher as compared to white shrimps and other SEAsia countries shifting to white shrimps in early to mid-2000. India seeing the threat of losing the business compl etely and a high foreign income started to re-evaluate bringi ng the white shrimps and a pilot project started with only two hatcheries and later has been introduced in Indian waters commercially in 2009 with lot of regulations and controlling agency looking into over expansion and killi ng the natural black tiger industry. Intensification and over production from the same water spread area with concepts of multiple harvesting led to over  stocking and similar model was followed in Indi a where few farmers started even reaping almost 20.0mts/ha. SPF brood stock import regulations led to use of farm reared brood stock by few people in many countries as well as India as the need of PL’s increased with high stocking and multiple crops and harvest. Inbreeding leading to exposure and challenging genetics of broodstock and PL quality issues leading to new diseases. High harvest and again the hike in price with now lack of new concepts and technologies started taking short cuts in shrimp farming and this has led to land in a scenari o with dreaded diseases which are to a large extent on poor manag ement. Early Mortality Syndrome(EMS) the dreaded diseases disea ses which started in China and has travelled to all countries in the region has parked its base now in India which has been official ly confirmed. Majority of the deaths in early months when have been analyzed has seen only less than 20% impacted by the so-called bug Vibrio parahaemolyticus but the bigger problem has been the white spot virus which has been seen in more than 50% of the mortalities and the remaining can be co-related to poor management of shrimp pond . Understanding, the above facts and witho ut having a solution for EMS and WSSV, WSSV, at least 50% of the mortalities can be Notes: avoided by proper Shrimp Pond Management Practices. Shrimp School intends and has brought in speakers for the first time under one platform who from their varied long experience will share on making maki ng the management practices prac tices more robust and take BACK TO BASICS which we by the evoluti on of time has been sidelined or forgotten. Shrimp School will continue this in each year with new concepts and need of the industry and already has got the attention of people of other nations requesting to host similar event in other countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia.
