Shell Malaysia complies with the global Shell Group health, safety and environment management system framework on managing the business in ways that contribute to sustainability. The framework is reviewed regularly and the process updated as part of continuous improvements to address statistical reporting and monitoring trends.

Robust Crisis Management System Working in highly challenging environments expose our operations to emergency and sometimes crisis situations. For us, the best crisis management system lies in running our business responsibly, according to our business and sustainable development principles. A robust Shell Malaysia Crisis Management System outlines the structure and practical operations of the crisis organisation to ensure that the company is as prepared as possible to respond effectively to a serious crisis situation. Everyone who has a role in either the company's crisis organisation or in a Business Support Team is trained and refresher courses and drills are conducted regularly to ensure all are familiar with this Plan. With the Crisis Management Plan in place, our responses are expected to reflect our values and standards in meeting the expectations of all our stakeholders, minimising the threat of losing human lives, damage to property and the environment, as well as our reputation. In 2003 alone, EP conducted 13 emergency response exercises and assessments, one crisis management workshop, one oil spill and one chemical spill exercise each. OP and GP also conducted in-house several desktop exercises. The same robust crisis management system is in place in our operations or businesses involving partnerships with third parties. This includes ensuring that crisis response arrangements are tested, and that roles and responsibilities between partners are understood. Back To Top Business Continuity Plans In managing for sustainability, business continuity plans are required to protect critical business processes from major failures or disasters. For this purpose, Shell Malaysia has developed and continued to maintain a business continuity planning process for the appropriate recovery plans. The objective of business continuity planning is to ensure that the Company's critical business activities are restored and maintained as quickly as possible following any major disaster or failure that affects essential services or facilities. Different levels of planning will be required, because each level will have a different focus and may involve different recovery teams. Our model business continuity framework will have four main components: Emergency procedures - which describe the immediate actions to be taken following a major incident which jeopardises business operations or human life. Fallback procedures - which describe the actions to be taken to move essential business activities or support services to alternative temporary locations. Resumption procedures - which describe the actions to be taken to return to normal full business operations, usually at the original site. Test schedule - which specifies how and when the plan will be tested.

Case Study 'Tukul Besi Exercise' To Test Crisis Teams Scenarios are a tool for helping management plan for the future. They also help us think the unthinkable, anticipate uncertainties and utilise both to make better strategic decisions. One such scenario for Shell Malaysia came in the form of a desk-top crisis training exercise, named TUKUL BESI in June 2003. Stretched over half a day, the exercise involved a cross-business, multiple-incident scenario which was designed to test the Shell Malaysia Crisis Team, Oil Products Crisis Management Team, Corporate Affairs KL Team and the Crisis Secretariat Team. This security scenario was aimed at reassuring senior management and supporting staff of their readiness to manage a country crisis more than one business unit.
