etermined. Relentless. Stubborn. That’s how Seneca basketball phenom Brittany Snow’s parents describe their daughter. Snow recently surpassed both girls’ and boys’ all-time scoring record in varsity basketball with 1,083 points. The 18-year-old said she was present when Chelsea Grover scored 1,079 and when Rich McNamara set the previous record with 1,081 points. The 6-foot tall senior scored 86 points as a freshman, 344 as a sophomore, and 449 as a junior. She has been on the varsity team since her freshman year. “My family always pushed me to do my best,” Snow said, noting her parents are always 100 percent behind her. Her grandparents also attend all of her games. “It’s really nice because you always know you have your own little cheering section at the games,” Snow said, adding it’s good to have people you know in the stands because they can console her if she makes mistakes. Snow got a full scholarship to Stony Brook University on Long Island, and plans to study biology there.

Brittany Snow makes her 1,000th point by hitting a foul shot in the game against Cherokee. She had 26 points in the 59-39 win.

Teacher of the year named at Seneca By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY The Shamong Sun When Greg Bauer found out he was named Seneca High School’s Teacher of the Year for the 20112012 school year, he was “totally floored.” “I’m totally blown away by it,” Bauer said. “I’m humbled by it.” He noted he is surrounded by a lot of great teachers at Seneca who love kids. “To be chosen from this staff is pretty amazing,” he said. Bauer has taught environmental earth science at Seneca since it opened nine years ago. He has been teaching 13 years overall. A Southampton native, he attended Lenape High School. Bauer said he comes from a family of teachers. “That was certainly part of it,” he said of his choice to be a teacher. Bauer went to North Carolina State University and was planning to study medicine, but he says he discovered that wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life. He said he liked the idea of working with kids. Bauer took education courses in college and “kind of immediately figured out” that’s what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He said something as simple as daily interaction with kids is the most rewarding part of his job. “I get the opportunity to work with kids every day and help them in their journey through school,” Bauer said. “I get a lot of joy out of that.” He also enjoys having former

students tell him of their success. “It’s a neat experience,” Bauer said. “It’s very rewarding.” Budget problems in the last few years, the drying up of state money and an increase in class sizes provide the biggest challenges for him as a teacher, Bauer says. “We’ve had to maintain or get better at what we do with less resources,” he said. Bauer said his advice to someone considering teaching is to make sure you love working with kids all day, every day. “I think that’s a big part of it,” he said. “If they’re going into it for that reason, then they’re going to have a very rewarding career.” Bauer said he appreciates the opportunity of working with all kinds of young people, from special ed kids to honors students. “I’m always trying to get better at what I do,” he said, noting he tweaks what he does every year and tries to follow trends in education. A head wrestling coach and assistant baseball coach at Seneca, Bauer said he tries to teach things outside the classroom. “That’s a big part of what we do as educators,” he said. “Part of our job is to not only teach kids the content, but also to teach kids to work hard, to teach kids to set goals. I think as educators, we try to teach kids a lot of life skills that they’ll take with them, hopefully for the rest of their lives. I think that part of our job is sometimes as important – if not more important – than teaching our content material.”

Dwyer named partner at Association Headquarters, Inc. Association Headquarters, Inc., a Mount Laurel-based association management company, is pleased to announce a new partner. Michael Dwyer has been named as the third owner of AH, where he joins Chief Executive Officer Bill MacMillan and President and Chief Operating Officer Bob Waller. “This partnership positions us for the continued growth and future of the company,” said MacMillan, who founded AH in 1978. “Mike’s expertise has and will continue to help move us forward on a path to success.” Dwyer will serve as AH’s senior vice-president, overseeing the newly blended marketing and communications team. This is a cross-functional group comprised of public relations, marketing, sales, creative services and business development departments. He also serves as the executive

director of AH’s longest-standing client, the juvenile products manufacturer’s association. “When I came to the company in 2004, I immediately knew that I wanted it to be the last stop in my career, and to be able retire from AH,” said Dwyer. “And now I will have that opportunity.” Dwyer is recognized as a leader among his colleagues, and was the recipient of the 2011 Mid Atlantic Society of Association Executives (MASAE) Points of Light Award, designed to honor an MASAE member who has demonstrated a commitment to his or her community and the needs of others. Mike is an active community volunteer and resident of Shamong, where he serves on the board of trustees for the Shamong Foundation for Education Excellence. Snow sets all-time basketball scoring record at Seneca with 1,083 points SNOW Continued from page 1 She is interested in medical school – and thinks she may someday be a doctor because science is her favorite subject. “I like helping people,” Snow said, noting science and philanthropy are a “great fit.” And what of her accomplishments? “I never thought I could do that,” she said of reaching 1,000 points. “I never thought I’d actually pass the records.” Snow laughed when she said she probably fell a lot as a child because she pushes herself too hard. “I don’t give up,” she said. “I just keep going and even when things look too hard, I know somehow we’ll get them done.”

A member of the National Honor Society, Snow said she likes to learn things she can use. And her advice is simple. “It sounds corny, but it really comes down to hard work,” Snow said. “If you work hard enough you can do it, you just have to put in the hours and the effort.” Donna Snow, Brittany’s mother, said her daughter always wanted to learn how to do things and then how to excel at them. “She was pretty determined in whatever she wanted to do,” Donna said. Brittany was in second-grade when she first started playing, but has had a ball in her hand since she was 6. She started playing AAU basketball in seventhgrade.

“It’s really her toughness and tenacity when she’s out on the court,” Donna said. “That’s really what sets her apart.” She also said Brittany has a stubborn side. “She’ll stand up for what she thinks is right,” Donna said. She also said she is happy her daughter is attending Stony Brook. “We could not be prouder,” Donna said. “We feel like we hit the lottery when she was offered a full scholarship.” Rich Snow, Brittany’s father, said his daughter is relentless. “She would put her mind to something – she could fail – but she didn’t quit,” he said. “She just won’t stop until she gets it right.”

in our opinion

Two new family members Today, we welcome West Windsor and Robbinsville to the Sun family oday marks a special day at Elauwit Media, publisher of The Sun newspapers. We welcome West Windsor and Robbinsville to our family. These two additions bring our number of newspapers to 15. We serve the communities of Haddonfield, Moorestown, Cherry Hill East, Marlton, Medford, Voorhees, Washington Township, Shamong, Mt. Laurel and Tabernacle in South Jersey. Now, in Central Jersey, we serve Lawrence, Montgomery, Hopewell, West Windsor and Robbinsville. Most importantly, we’d like to thank everyone for the support we have received over the years. We started with one newspaper, in

Haddonfield, in 2004. Our goal always has been to provide our readers and advertisers with the best service possible. We strive every week to bring you local news that is important to you. From coverage of local meetings and events to features on interesting people and activities, we want you to look forward to receiving your Sun in the mail every week. But the true measure of success has been the involvement of the communities in their local Suns. We ask our

readers to send us news they want to share with their friends and neighbors. When students achieve greatness in the classroom or on the playing field or when civic groups work to raise money for a good cause, we want to hear about it – and then tell everyone else about it. We’ve managed to grow rapidly during one of the most difficult economic times in our nation’s history – and during a time that has been especially difficult for many newspapers. We want to continue to grow. And to do that, we know we have to publish newspapers that reflect the values and priorities of the communities they serve. We thank you for your continued support.

Lenape board votes to move election to November On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education passed a resolution to move its annual school election from April to November, beginning this year. The move places school board candidates on the November ballot and eliminates the need for a public vote on the proposed school budget if it remains at or below the state’s 2 percent levy cap. All eight LRHSD sending districts passed similar resolutions in recent weeks, which effectively moved the regional school board election to November. While not required, Lenape regional’s resolution demonstrates the district’s strong support for the move, which in the view of the board of education, is in the best interest

of students and the regional communities. “This is a groundbreaking change for New Jersey’s public school districts, including Lenape regional,” LRHSD Board of Education President Ted Shinske said. “The change will save taxpayer dollars as we eliminate the cost of the school budget vote and reduce the cost of school board elections by holding them in conjunction with the annual November elections.” “We estimate that moving the election and eliminating the budget vote will save more than $56,000 in election costs per year for four years for the regional district alone,” Lenape Regional High School District Business Administrator James Hager said. State statute requires that a district’s de-

cision to move the annual election must remain in effect for a minimum of four years. Hager added that, although the budget vote is eliminated, districts are required to follow many of the same steps they followed to prepare and submit a budget in past years. The district will hold a public hearing on March 28, followed by a board vote. Budget information, including tax impact, will be posted on the district website following the March 28 vote. For more information about the changes in the annual school board and budget elections and this year’s budget process, visit www.lrhsd.org to view a list of questions and answers provided by the New Jersey Department of Education.

Kindergarten registration runs from Feb. 27 to March 1 Registration for Shamong children entering kindergarten in September 2012 is scheduled for Feb. 27 to March 1. Parents should complete the registration packet at Indian Mills School in order to help school officials structure classes for next year. To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 on or before Oct. 1. The district is also continuing with an initiative begun last year designed to help our youngest students nurture and grow

stronger called KinderClub. This is an enrichment program developed to enhance the learning experience for our next generation. Parents interested in KinderClub can inquire further and enroll their children when they register for Kindergarten. In order to help parents make a decision that is right for them and their children, open hours from 11:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. have been established for visits to KinderClub concurrent with registration. Anyone planning on a visit to

the class during this week should plan an afternoon registration appointment. Parents must bring the following paperwork to registration: original birth certificate with state seal; medical records – particularly immunization records; three proofs of residency (one must be a deed or lease; the other proofs can be a current utility bill, driver’s license, etc.). Call 268-0220, ext. 2000, starting Feb. 6 to make an appointment to register.
