We see an office with its door closed. On the side of the door is a printout with the following quote : " By showing me injustice, he taught me to love justice. by teaching me what pain and humiliation were all about, he awakened my heart to mercy... Fight against prejudice, battle the oppressors, support the underdog..." 2

Different youtube video streams. Fanatic faces in various live situations are captured in the video streams. These are Intercut with violent, grainy and ultra slow motion visuals from Mumbai riots and blasts.... The first fanatic speech is set in a massive public rally. FANATIC 1 Kaun hai rey hai yeh Shahid Azmi? samajhta kya hai apne aap ko? Saale ko Pakistan bhejo. Shivaji maharaj ke baare mein ulta bolnewaale ko nikaalo yahaan se. Aise bhadwon ko yahan nahin rahne denge hum. The second fanatic speech is a television interview with a seedy television channel. FANATIC 2 Shahid Azmi ek terrorist hai jo jail mein tha. Ab jail se bahar aakar doosre terrorist ko bachata hai. Sharm aati hai apne system pe, jo Azmi jaise sabse ghatiya darze ke aadmi ko lawyer banne se rok nahin sakti. Saalon ko arrest karte hi maar kyon nahin dete? The third fanatic speech is a man in white robes with a soft manner seated on a large throne like chair made out of silver and upholstered with red suede. FANATIC 3 Advocate shahid azmi, tum logon ko Gandhi ne sahuliyat di rahne ki…Usko tum log adhikaar samajhne lage… Gandhi ne jo bhul ki thi azaadi ke samay usko hum abhi tak bhugat rahein hain. We see a court in procedure. We see around, with the Prosecutor standing and presenting his views...Not audible. We see the defense lawyer sitting and listening attentively. This is SHAHID AZMI. We pan across to the man in the dock FAHIM ANSARI and slowly we move to the Judge. JUDGE Defense. Prosecutor sits. Shahid stands to make his statement. SHAHID Your Honour, Office colleagues ki baat karein ya padosiyon ki, koi is baat par yakin nahin karta. Yeh, mere client ke co workers jo Dubai mein uske saath kaam karte thay, unka ek letter addressed to you. Police mein koi record bhi nahin hai inka. JUDGE Public Prosecutor. Shahid sits. (CONTINUED)

4 PROSECUTOR Defence ke is baat se main sahmat hoon ki inki local Police mein koi record nahin. Haan yeh Rampur jail mein zaroor thay yahan aaney se pahle. SHAHID Your honour, Prosecution jis arrest ki baat kar raha hai woh case Uttar pradesh ka hai. Hum aaj yahan ke case ki discussion kar rahein hain. PROSECUTOR Woh bhi terrorism ka hi case hai. Your honour, main yeh kah raha hoon ki inka past, inke present aur future par roshni zaroor dalta hai. Yeh jail mein tha. Isse ek baat zaroor saaf hoti hai- inka anti social bent. SHAHID Jab yeh saaf hai ki dono mein koi co-relation nahin hai? PROSECUTOR (silent) SHAHID Shivaji.. bhi thay, jail mein. Kya Woh bhi anti social thay? PROSECUTOR (jumps up, enraged) Defense is baat ko kahan se kahan le jaa rahi hai. Aap ek terror accused ki tulna ek aitihasik vyaktitva ke saath kaise kar sakte hain? SHAHID Not comparing. Main bas yeh pooch raha hoon ki agar aaj is katghare mein Shivaji maharaj khade hote toh kya aap faisla unke is case kay evidence ko dekh ke lete ya phir ye dekhke ki past mein woh jail mein thay? The defense is answer less. We pan across to see a man making a phone call just outside the court room. 5

EXT. COURT - DAY - 1993

Shahid is walking in the alley with his friend, Ramanathan.. RAMANATHAN Kabhi sun bhi liya kar doston ki baat, Shahid. Ram, sun..

SHAHID They start walking down the stairs.. RAMANATHAN Main nahin sununga. your highness ko pata chalne de.. Shahid smiles. SHAHID Yaar... keep her out of this... please ussey mat bataana... They reach the bottom of the staircase where a group of 4 men is waiting for them. They circle Shahid.. RAMANATHAN Kya ho raha hai yeh. FIRST MAN Saalya, chutiya..tu bol kaise shakat rey.. SHAHID Kya? SECOND MAN Bharat ki shaan hai..Shivaji Maharaj.. THIRD MAN Saala atankwadi madharchod... Tere ko kya lagta hai? kuch bhi bakwas karega aur hum log sun lenge? Fourth man takes his collar in his hand, paints his face black.The rest use their legs and hands.Ramanathan yells for help. The group runs away. (CONTINUED)

Shahid is breathing with difficulty. Ramanathan makes him sit and pats him on his back.. Are you ok?

Haan.. We see Shahid's face painted black as we go closer to his face... 6

EXT. SRINAGAR - NIGHT - 1992

FLASHBACK A BEGINS. Pitch dark, moonless night. Shahid, 18 crossing the POK border with a group. They are clad in a pathani and a shawl. Hidden underneath these shawls are AK 47 of which we get a sneak peek. Shahid is terrified. They cross the border. 5 of the lot kiss the soil as Shahid watches them, in his own deep thought. They start walking, next meet a Pakistani army major who is there with a jeep. Sun is rising as they pray. It is one of the best sunrises Shahid has seen, he takes deep breaths and feels really charged up. Smiles. SUPER : Bombay, 06/12/1992. 7

INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'S HOUSE - NIGHT - 1992

Shahid is in his room on the first floor...Khalid is asleep while his younger brother RASHID is reading a book..Opens the window, looks out..He sees a man pouring kerosene in a house next lane...Shahid isn't sure about what the man is up to but keeps looking as the man moves away...Man comes back and throws a burning kerosene bottle and starts running... Shahid runs down the staircase and gets out of the backdoor...Arif and mother yell in unison asking him to stop...Arif runs to the door and stands there...Mother comes to the door to see Smoke in the air. 8

EXT. SHIVAJI NAGAR STREET - NIGHT - 1992

Smoke gets heavier as Shahid crosses and reaches the street... He goes near the house on fire..as he is about to turn for the door...3 adults and a child aged about 10 years on fire, run out...Shahid stands their stunned for a second...starts coughing with the thick smoke... He looks on the outer street to see a procession of radicals on the main road....they are armed with swords and are forcing people out...of their houses... (CONTINUED)

Very soon there is mayhem on the entire stretch with houses on fire, people screaming, running helter-skelter and mixed cries of women, children and men. In fear Shahid turns back and with great difficulty runs towards his house.. 9

INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'S HOUSE - NIGHT - 1992

Shahid comes back and starts knocking... Mother and Arif sit near the window. Its dark inside...Shahid continues knocking and starts yelling that its him...Arif stands but mother forces him to sit. Arif cant take it anymore...opens the window and ask him to come from the main door...Shahid runs...Arif rushes down...mother follows...Arif opens and Shahid gets inside, and Arif just looks outside to see if anyone was watching and closes the door..Mother starts slapping Shahid continuously before she breaks down, Arif keeps her from losing balance. Shahid is silent - seething and fearful. 10

EXT. MUMBAI STREET - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992

We go past an electronic store with multiple television sets. One of the televisions is broadcasting the news. We see footage showing the demolition of Babari Masjid by the Hindu kar sewaks... FLASHBACK-B ENDS 11

EXT. OUTSIDE THE CAMP - DAY - 1993

A whole group is escorted to the camp. Shahid smiles to break the ice. Only RAFIQ responds. The camp is located in the middle of nowhere. An air of nothingness in the air. Shahid waits outside the camp with the others. 12

A day passes, group is getting impatient with time ticking away. We see the changing sky while Shahid and RAFIQ exchange a glance at each other. RAFIQ Lagta hai humein dono partner honge andar. Iii saala sab toh apne mein laga rahega. SHAHID Pahle andar to jaayein.. (CONTINUED)

SHAHID Bombay. Shahid naam hai mera... RAFIQ Hum ko lag gaya tha. Aap?

RAFIQ Gorakhpur. Rafiq... SHAHID Main jagah nahin, wajah pooch raha tha? RAFIQ Sab abhi jaan loge? SHAHID Aap hi ne kaha tha hum partner hain. A man walks out to the gate and yells at Shahid and Rafiq to go and sit with the rest of group. 13

EXT. CAMP - DAY - 1993

A man comes out and directs them to walk behind him. Next, they are in a room with a trainer. The trainer has a desk in front of him with small boxes. COMMANDER Apne Paise aur jevar in dabbon mein rakho..Kisi ke paas passport hai? Waits for a reaction...All in the group shake their heads... Shahid goes first. Everyone follows suit. The last man to go is a Kashmiri who is wearing a chain with a locket...He takes out money and keeps it in the box...Turns back to go to his seat.... Ruko..

COMMANDER (CONT'D) He turns... Behre ho?

COMMANDER (CONT'D)

KASHMIRI (Hesitant) Nahin Janaab... COMMANDER (Leans and pulls out the chain he is wearing) Toh phir yeh... KASHMIRI Kya main yeh chain... COMMANDER (Interrupts) Mauj lene aaye ho yahaan? KASHMIRI Main nahin de sakta... COMMANDER Daffa ho jao phir... (Picks out the cash) Lo, isse bhi le jao... Janaab...

KASHMIRI COMMANDER Aagey Kya karoge, Abhi se dikh raha hai.... Kashmiri takes out the chain and reluctantly puts it down in the box. Shahid and the group observe. 14

EXT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, OUTSIDE SHAHID'S HOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992 FLASHBACK B BEGINS A man, MEHBOOB, sweating profusely is walking with a shabby looking container. Two cops stop him. CONSTABLE GAITONDE Kahaan jaa raha hai be... (CONTINUED)

MEHBOOB Sandaas saab... CONSTABLE GAITONDE Aise bol na... pakistani mein kaayko baat karta hai... MEHBOOB Saab.zor ki lagi hai.jaane do na. SECOND COP Sun... MALE Jee saab SECOND COP Saade teen baje sandaas jaa raha hai? MALE Saab, Ab ispe kisika zor hai? The man continues on his journey towards the toilet, bottle in hand. FIRST COP Ruk na... Man stops and looks back FIRST COP (CONT'D) Kya khana khaya re... bata na... Mutton... Biryani?

MALE SECOND COP MALE Naa... Suar ka?

They begin to laugh. The man is awkward and begins to walk. SECOND COP Ghar mein nahin hai kya? MALE (urgency increasing) Kya? Sandaas?

SECOND COP

MALE Poori basti mein nahi hain saab. FIRST COP Mutton kahaan se mila re? Curfew ke time bhi bakre ko nahin chhodenge tum pakistani log... haan? The cops laugh. SECOND COP Ganesh jaane de rey... idhar hi kar denga yeh... Aur phir aisa baas marega. (to the man) Tu Jaa. As the man rushes towards the toilet we go around the nearly deserted 'basti' to see Shahid at the window watching this banter. 15

INT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, SHAHID'SHOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992

On Shahid's face we hear the sound of a gun shot and the cry of a man falling down. Shahid hurriedly closes the window. We remain on the closed window. 16

EXT. SHIVAJI NAGAR, OUTSIDE SHAHID'S HOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON - 1992 Continuation of Sc.13 We return to the scene with the man having collapsed to the ground, blood spurting out of his head. The cops come close to him and fire a few more shots. They kick the dead body. The man shakes with rigor mortis. Distant sound of a police siren is heard. (CONTINUED)

The 'cops' look at each other and begin to run as the sounds of the siren come closer. 17

EXT. CAMP - DAWN - 1993

A group of 40 fresh recruits are assembled in a ground. The commander of the training camp is about to give a speech. Expectation in the air. Shahid and, Rafiq (the dark skinned boy) stand in a line together. The Commander makes an entry. He walks straight to the podium, confident gait. Stands there and sizes up a very young group. Smiles and starts. COMMANDER Ghulam hone se badtar darza insaan ke liye kuuch nahin. Jo Iraq mein hua, bosnia mein ho raha hai,kal Kashmir mein bhi hoga. As this speech continues, the following visuals are seen : Grind starts at 3.30 a.m with the early morning prayer. (It is not compulsory in Islam, but an avid Muslim would never miss it. Here they cant!) One found sleeping is forcibly woken up. They offer their prayers and go for jogging. Come back at 6.00 after 2 hours. Very exhausted group, each one of them panting for air. They start taking showers immediately. Self Service!!! They pull water from the well. They are taking aim at paper targets. Group shown having breakfast. All sitting on the floor as a Mulla supervises the arrangement standing at a distance. Next they are in a class where they are studying Koran. The sun is out, and the group is in the ground doing military drills.... (CONTINUED)

18 COMMANDER (CONT'D) Yeh Kya zindagi hai, kya diya hai isne hum logo ko? Apne padosi ka khauff dil mein liye kab tak jeete rahenge hum? Ek gair mazhabi mulk ya ek kaafir padosi, Nasl dar nasl kabr mein chali gayin par yeh khauff dafan nahin kar paaye hum. Bas.Bas bahut hua. Kya hum mujahideen is khauff ko na sirf apne aap se par apne saare mussalman bhaiyon ke dil se bhi nikal paayenge? Hamesha, hamesha ke liye. Yaad rahe, insaan ki asli taqat uske jazbaat ki gehrai mein hai. Hum ladna nahin chahte, par aisi zalalat bhari zindagi bhi namanzoor hai hamein. Islam ka markazi nishaan, asli maqaam aur Aakhiri hathyar hai-JIHAD. Tumhare bhaiyon ko zaroorat hai tumhari. Kya tumhari zindagi ka maqsad sirf Kashmir ki azaadi hai?

The speech ends and we catch Shahid and Rafiq sit for an early dinner...Shahid is disgruntled. SHAHID Dimaag ki vaat laga rahe log. Roz Subah 3 baje phir utho aur phir wahi. RAFIQ Toh tumko kaa karna hai? They hear voices. They look out of the window and see Pakistanis fighting and abusing each other in Punjabi. RAFIQ (CONT'D) Suwar ko gahna pahnane doge toh tatti khana thode chodega. Shahid manages a smile. 19

EXT. CAMP, TRAINING GROUND - DAY - 1993 Montage continues A group of 10 is given training by a New Commander. They train for mountain climbing.

A few men are assembling bombs. Their commander is teaching them how to assemble a bomb. 21

A few days pass, Shahid has an adolescent beard. They are taking aim at paper targets. 23

INT. CAMP, CLASSROOM - DAY - 1993

We catch Shahid is sitting in an educational class. A mulla is giving the lesson. 20 students are in the class. TEACHER (A little rhetorical) Hamare dushmanon ki tadad humse kahin zyaada hai aur unke paas ek se badhkar aala hathyar bhi. Kaise rokenge hum unhein? Sirf ek rasta hai. Shahadat. Fear in students. He tries to change the course. TEACHER (CONT'D) Tum mein se kiske ghar mein naukar ki sahuliyat thi? The boys look at each other faces as the teacher waits for someone. No body raises a hand. Teacher hides his surprise. TEACHER (CONT'D) Jannat mein tumhare 80,000 khidmat gaar honge. The kids smile when they hear that. TEACHER (CONT'D) Jaise yeh tumhari yeh dozakh zindagi ka khatama hoga, tumhari doosri zindagi ki shuruwat. Wahan tumhein woh saari khushiyan milegi jo tumhein yahaan nasib nahin hui. Har qurbani ke liye taiyaar rahna farz hai mujahid ka. Kal hamare 2, sabse dilair jawaan qurban honge. Insha Allah. (CONTINUED)

23 SHAHID (innocently) Yeh aapko abhi kaise pata? TEACHER Insaani Bomb. SHAHID Khud Khushi ki izzazat nahin deta Islam. TEACHER (a little agitated) Tumhein lagta hai yeh khud kushi hai?... Yeh meri nazar mein shahadat hai. Khud kushi kamzor dil karte hain, shahadat ek qurbani hai jo mazboot iradon ke bina mumkin nahin. Khud kushi mayus,afsurd dimaag ki fitrat hai.Shahadat naye waqt ka aghaaz hai jismein ummid hai.. Islam ke saath ho rahe nainsaafi se nijaat ki. Khud Kushi sharmnaak hai, isliye Islam pabandi lagata hai. Shahadat kismat walon ko milti hai..Gadhe, 100 Janam bhi lenge toh bhi yeh nahin samjhenge.

Everyone is convinced with the answer. Shahid does not agree but wary of open dissent, looks down. 24

INT. CAMP, TENT - MORNING - 1993 Shahid is shivering in his blanket, very cold. He opens his eyes to see his mother sitting and smiling near his bed. He smiles but cant see her anymore. We hear dialogues with a close up on Shahid's sad face. MOTHER (O.S.) Humne kabhi kisi ka bura nahin kiya. Humare saath kuuch bura nahin hoga.. SHAHID (O.S) Nusrat khala ne bhi kisike saath galat nahin kiya... MOTHER (O.S) Galat aur sahi ka faisala is ghar mein main karoongi.

EXT. CAMP - EVENING - 1993

Shahid and Rafiq are walking together... We join from the middle of their conversation. SHAHID Main hoon idhar, ghar mein kisi ko maloom nahin...Toh main aana toh chahta tha... Iii Kaise?

RAFIQ

SHAHID Ammi ko pata laga toh meri khaal utarwa dengi... RAFIQ Bhak. Mazaak kar rahe ho. Shahid nods.They see a large crowd. The crowd seems to be very charged up, they are all raising their hands in Inquilaab. They walk towards the spot... The conversation stops as they reach the spot. They see a man bent on his knees and looking down. Somebody pats Shahid gently from behind. Shahid looks back. It's ABRAAR. ABRAR Kya haal chaal hai? RAFIQ Wahi chamdi wahi khaal hai. They all smile. SHAHID Yeh aadmi aise kyun baitha hai? ABRAR Police informer. RAFIQ Toh ab ka hoga? Dekhte jao.

ABRAR Rafiq and Shahid look, stunned. A man in a mask comes up and starts reading the farmaan as the crowd chant Allah u Akbar again and again. Informant starts shivering. Farmaan read, the reader puts a black mask on the face of the informant bent on his knees. He starts shaking. (CONTINUED)

The farmaan reader takes out a knife and bends to slice his head as the camera focuses on Shahid. Muffled grunts at the time of beheading in the background... He turns back and starts walking in haste as Abrar and Rafiq walk behind him. They sit in a corner. Shahid is distraught. Abrar stands up to leave. Pats him gently on his back. ABRAR (CONT'D) Bacche, nikal lo yahan se. Warna kya galat hai kya sahi yeh sochna band kar. 26

INT. CAMP - NIGHT - 1993

Shahid is lying in the bed, eyes closed. Memories of beheading playing in his head. "Kya Galat kya sahi" He closes his eyes and starts weeping 27

EXT. CAMP - MORNING - 1993

Shahid is taking a bath on the well and Rafiq is with him. Shahid sees a Pakistani mujahid walking towards the exit with his luggage. He smiles when he sees Shahid and makes a gesture with his hand of a plane taking off. Shahid gets green with envy. He walks up to his TRAINER. SHAHID Janaab, mujhe ghar jaana hai... Namumkin...

TRAINER SHAHID Janaab,Meri tabiyat bahut kharab hai. Sirf 10 din. TRAINER Tabiyat kharab bhi hai aur pata bhi hai kitne din lagenge thik hone mein. Kya baat hai. Kya bimari hai doctor saab. humein bhi bataaye? SHAHID Migraine, Sir. ... (CONTINUED)

27 TRAINER (doesn't look) Janaab, sir nahin! Accha, Tumhein Srinagar bhej dete hain.Wahan Taj hotel mein rukna.AC room mein rahna.Dal lake mein naav.Ilaaj bhi kara lena aur apni maa bahan ki izzat ek hote hue bhi dekh lena. (looks up) Shaamil bhi ho jaana.Jawan ho, kami kis baat ki hai. Phir camp ka doctor toh aise bhi thik nahin kar sakta.Uski dawai bhi farzi. Kyun?

Shahid's eyes go moist. Tears roll down his cheeks. Janaab...

SHAHID

TRAINER Aaj araam karo.Doctor ke paas jao. Aur kal training mein dikho. Chalo. Shahid turns back, wipes his eyes. The crying does not stop as he walks away slowly. 28

EXT. CAMP - EVENING - 1993 Shahid walks alone. He sees a GROUP OF PAKISTANI MUJAHIDS smoking weed. He stands and stares at them. The group stands up as Shahid starts leaving. MUJAHID-1 Abey ruk... Shahid stops. Hesitant. The group reaches there. MUJAHID-2 Kisko ghoor raha tha? He starts pushing him backwards. Shahid mumbles. The remaining in the group keep up a step with the gang leader as the camera captures them advancing towards Shahid, as the man is pushing him back.

EXT. CAMP, GROUND - EVENING - 1993

Shahid lies there badly bruised. Rafiq comes and takes him to the his tent. 30

INT. CAMP, TENT - EVENING - 1993

Rafiq enters the tent and places Shahid on his bed. RAFIQ Hum ek din nahin thay.Pata tha ii hoga. Ihaan koi azaadi nahin hai, bhalle hum kisi aur ki azaadi ke liye lad rahein hain. Rafiq's tirade is interrupted as the trainer walks in. TRAINER Shahid, tum fit hone ke baad field ke 10 chakkar lagaoge, roz. He leaves. Shahid's look tells us that he cant care less. 31

EXT. CAMP, TRAINING GROUND - LATE EVENING - 1993

The group is playing volley ball as Shahid runs around the ground. Shahid thinking that nobody is watching him starts taking small rounds. The trainer however is keenly observing him from his office. The trainer comes out and yells. Shahid. 32

TRAINER INT. CAMP, TRAINER'S OFFICE - LATE EVENING - 1993 Shahid is a little anxious as he gets in. Kaise ho?

TRAINER SHAHID Janaab, thik.. TRAINER Bahut Accha. Jawaan mard ko tandurust hona chahiye. (Looks at the wounds) Zakhm sukh gaya tumhara. Shahid looks surprised by the soft tone. He was thinking he would get a run down for faking his punishment. The trainer asks him to sit. He sits down. (CONTINUED)

As he enters he sees his office flooded with people. A number of males, females and children. He looks at them as they look back helplessly. A female stands and follows him to his cabin. As she walks in, Shahid's eyes focus on the children. One of them is being slapped by her mother and the baby starts crying. The others in the crowd try to speak to Shahid about their arrested family members and about the police. They make a din and Shahid tries to calm them down. 204

Shahid reaches office. The caller, PARANJPE and two other men are waiting for him. Shahid walks in signalling the 3 men to follow him inside.. Inder closes the cabin door after Shahid enters and sits down at the entrance. Three gun shots are heard. The men walk out as the Inder stands frozen. The door is half open as we see Shahid's face lying on the table in a pool of blood. On one side of the door we read the paper that Shahid had stuck when he moved into the office. It reads : " By showing me injustice, he taught me to love justice. by teaching me what pain and humiliation were all about, he awakened my heart to mercy... Fight against prejudice, battle the oppressors, support the underdog..." 232
