Motivation Greetings!

Video presentation on the Convergence of Two Oceanic Plates  II.  Discussion (Present a picture showing two oceanic plates colliding)

Student’s Activity  Activity

Like the first type of convergent boundaries discussed earlier, converging oceanic plates will cause formation of trenches, and these trenches will become sources of earthquakes. Underwater earthquakes, especially the stronger ones, can generate tsunamis. The Japanese term for “harbor wave,” tsunami is a series

of ocean waves with very long wavelengths (typically hundreds of kilometers) caused by large-scale disturbances of the ocean.  The leading edge of the subducted plate will eventually reach the mantle causing it to melt and turn into magma. The molten material will rise to the surface creating a volcanic to the trench. Volcanicisland islandarc arcparallel is a chain of volcanoes position in an arc shape as seen in figure below. ( Figure 11. Crosssectional diagram of converging oceanic plate) What will happen when two oceanic plates collide? (Video presentation) III.

Application

A.  Pre-activity Now before we begin the activity listen carefully to the instruction. a)  You will be group into 5 groups. Each group has 4 members. b)  Each member should have a role/participation in the activity. c)  After the activity, each group should present their activity. d)  You will be rated using a rubric. B.  Activity Proper  Proper

Objectives: a)  Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries. b)  Determine the consequences of colliding plates Procedure:   Procedure: a.  Study Figure 10 showing a cross-sectional diagram of plates that are converging, and answer the questions that follow. (Figure 11. Cross-sectional diagram of converging oceanic plate)

C.  Post Activity: 1)  What are the geologic processes/events that will occur because of this plate movement?

2)  What geologic features might form at the surface of Plate A? 3)  If the edge of Plate A suddenly flicks upward, a large amount of water may be displaced. What could be formed at the surface of the ocean?

During the plate movement an earthquake might occur. Converging oceanic plates will cause formation of trenches.

The sudden movement of plate can cause underwater disturbance and might result to strong tsunamis.

Generalization 1.  What happens when two oceanic plates collide?

2.  What geologic features might form when two oceanic plates collide?

Converging oceanic plates will cause formation of trenches, and these trenches will become sources of earthquakes. Underwater earthquakes, especially the stronger ones, can generate tsunamis.

Trenches form when two oceanic plates collide.

D.  Assessment  The student will be assessed based on the activity. E.  Assignment Please bring the following materials;   modeling clay   2 blocks of wood   paper
