White and Yellow Belt Lessons
BELT RANKING
An accomplished practitioner of the Kung Fu Art cares not what color of belt he wears. His accomplishments are within his body and mind; the color of a belt will not change his ability to use his body and mind. Whatever rank you hold, be proud of it. Self-improvement in the Art of Kung Fu, not belt advancement, should then be the students’ goal. Remember that the strong green tree that stops growing withers and gradually dies. The following information is not given to frighten you, but rather to enlighten you as to how long and what you must know to advance in this Art. You enroll as a white belt. From the day you enroll it takes the average person who continues training and training and progressing about 3-5 months to qualify for his yellow belt. From the yellow to the green belt takes the average student approximately 4-6 months. From green to brown requires 10-12 months for the average student who keeps up with techniques and forms. Black belt is achieved within 12-16 months of brown belt providing the student passes his various requirements.
NOTE:
All advancement is dependent on consistent training and practice of all techniques and forms in addition to steady attendance to classes.

This is not an exact and precise comparison, but a rough comparison only to give one an idea of his level of advancement. White through Yellow is similar to grammar school education. Here the student learns rudimentary basics. In high school or Green through Brown "the student works to develop proficiency in his basic techniques. Brown through Black represents one's introduction to higher learning, for example, undergraduate study leading to a Bachelor's Degree. Progressing through the various degrees is representative of graduate study leading to a Master's Degree or further yet, to a P.H.D.
THE KUNG-FU SALUTE The following information will give you a better understanding of the positions, purpose, and meaning of the Kung-Fu salute. The salute is executed by stepping forward with the left foot and bringing it in to a kick stance. This stepping forward movement symbolizes your outstanding proudness for what knowledge of the Kung-Fu art you have. With the left foot remaining in the kick stance, the right arm forms a half right circle in front of you, with the fist closed and the thumb down. The fist represents you as a man experienced in the Kung-Fu art. The left hand, open and in a half moon shape, is the Orient where the art had its beginning. The protection of you, by the knowledge and skills of the Oriental Art is a very condensed meaning of the salute. Students, when executed correctly, the Kung-Fu salute sets you apart as a member of the oldest martial art in the world.
PYSCHOLOGY For a man to involve himself in a fight requires no great talent or ability. A man who is a trained fighter must consider what he has to both gain and lose from such an involvement. The trained fighter is a person who, once he moves, does so decisively. He will eliminate his problem as quickly and as effectively as possible. In so doing, it is very easy to severely injure or even kill a person. He should, therefore, determine if the offense he will act against justifies his action. Plainly, does the opponent merely insult him or does he represent possible injury or death? To be able to think through a problem, the trained fighter must keep a "cool head". This requires that his boiling point be very high. He must not let the heat of passion dictate what course he will take. A fighter who permits himself the luxury of a low boiling point and succumbs to his temper not only acts rashly, but also lacks organization, method, technique, power, control, and concentration, and common sense in his actions. He becomes a man who will make many enemies, provided of course, he remains alive and in good health for long. Briefly, he should consider each situation, summing up his opponent, the reason for the confrontation, and the appropriate action to take. He should train himself to always expect the unexpected in every situation and be prepared for it. The trained fighter is a professional who knows himself well. He knows his talents and capabilities and because of his knowledge, he does not feel the need to prove himself. He does not lack confidence as confidence is a matter of knowing the limit of one's capabilities. Very often that in itself will be the point of a fight, and it is an Ignorant person who fights because he does not know himself. Breath control is a must for the trained fighter as it goes hand-in-hand with one's concentration. Exhaling strongly as one strikes or throws gives added power. Proper breathing, once it is developed, assists one to naturally replenish his oxygen supply to meet his needs as they occur. As a person inhales, his lungs absorb and transmit the oxygen in his breath into his bloodstream. From here it is rushed to the brain, to other body organs, and to the muscle tissues. When a person burns energy through the exertion of force, the oxygen in the body is rapidly depleted and must be replenished. Exhaling permits one to emit the dead air and to take in oxygenized air into the lungs. As one strikes, he also exhales, and his concentration, which times the strike and exhaled breath together, focuses the strike on the target point. Concentration directs the will of the mind. The fighter, for example, is going to block his opponents punch. His concentration directs the block to the proper position with power and times the block to coincide with the exhaled breath. Concentration focuses the strike on the target point. The target point should be a point behind the punch that is blocked or the area that is hit. This also produces great power, as the trained fighter knows his greatest power or force is not at the end of his block or punch, but during it. He exhales as he strikes. On strikes and blocks the breath is exhaled quickly as the force exerted is all at once and one's oxygen is used up. On throws the breath is exhaled slower than before as the energy used up is not all at once, but extends through the entire time of the throw. This helps one use oxygen and energy more effectively.
