ABOUT ROTARY AXIS CONTROL

4-AXIS TOOLPATHS ABOUT ROTARY AXIS CONTROL Mastercam allows you to configure rotary axis motion for 2D or 3D toolpaths. You can select one of three types of rotary motion: Rotary Axis Positioning is used to index the part to a specified tool plane. The tool can then move in three axes. 3-axis is used to rotate the part while the tool axis stays parallel to the axis of rotation. Also called polar conversion, this replaces linear motion in X, Y, or Z with rotary motion. This is typically used to machine a toolpath on a face of a part. Axis Substitution is used to wrap a toolpath around a cylinder. The geometry can be either flat or already properly oriented in 3D space (select the Unroll option if this is so). Rotary Diameter sets the size of the cylinder that the toolpath is rotating about. It is used mainly for toolpaths on cylinders.

NOTE: Before you can create rotary axis motion, you need to properly configure the rotary axis components in your machine definition. You will only be able to select rotary axis options which are supported by your machine definition. Mastercam can simulate the rotary axis performance while backplotting the toolpath. To enable this feature, go to the Backplot Options dialog box and select Simulate Axis Substitution or Simulate Rotary Axis. The Rotary Axis Control page should look as shown.

EXERCISE 1: AXIS SUBSTITUTION - ROLL THE GEOMETRY Axis Substitution is used on machines that allow simultaneous four-axis movements. The toolpath replaces X or Y-axis with a rotary axis, known as A-axis or B-axis. Using this option, the part will be rotated about the rotating axis while the tool moves perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

 Select AXIS SUBSTITUTION - ROLL THE GEOMETRY.MCX-9.

The following functions/toolpaths are covered in this exercise: Xform Roll. Drill Toolpaths with Axis Substitution (X-axis). Slot mill Toolpath with Axis Substitution (X-axis). Contour Toolpath with Axis Substitution (X-axis).

ROLL THE GEOMETRY Change the main Level to 2 and name it "Rolled Geometry" Xform 

Roll.

 Select the geometry using window selection.  Enable Copy.  Enable Roll.  Rotate about Y axis.  Enable CCW.  Diameter 4.0" (Press Enter).

NOTE: You should see the rolled geometry as shown to the right.  Positioning 0 degrees.  Type Line/Arcs.

SETTING THE AXIS DEFINITIONS IN MACHINE DEFINITION  Expand Properties and select Files.  Click on the Edit button to edit the Machine definition.  Double click on the A Axis to edit the parameters.  Make sure that + X is highlighted in red as the Axis of rotation.  In the 0 degrees position have the Y+ selected.  Select the OK button several times until you exit from Properties.

DRILL THE 0.25" DIAMETER HOLES Toolpaths 

Drill.

 Select the 0.25" diameter holes.

Tool page  Select the 0.25" Drill.

Cut Parameters page  Enable the Cycle Drill/Counterbore.

Linking Parameters page  Clearance = 2.0" (Absolute) and enable Use clearance only at the start and end of operation.  Retract =0.1" (Absolute).  Top of stock = 0.0" (Absolute).  Depth = -0.25" (Absolute).

Tip Comp  Enable Tip comp.

Backplot the toolpath

NOTE: The toolpath motions are only 2-axis.

SUBSTITUTE X-AXIS  From the Toolpaths Manager, select Parameters and choose the Rotary Axis Control page.  Enable Axis substitution and Substitute X axis.  Enable CCW.  Enter Rotary diameter 4.0".  Make sure Unroll feature is not activated.

NOTE: For this toolpath we selected the flat geometry which makes the unroll function not necessary.  Regenerate the toolpath.

Backplot the toolpath Make visible only Level 2  Make sure that Simulate Axis Substitution is enabled in the Backplot Options.

NOTE: With Simulate Axis Substitution enabled the part is maintained in the same position, while the tool moves around.

DRILL THE 0.5" DIAMETER HOLES Make visible only Level 1 to see the flat geometry Toolpaths 

 Chain the outside obround shape CCW.

Tool page  Select the 3/8" Flat Endmill.  Enable Force tool change.

Cut Parameters  Enable Cutter compensation in Computer to the Left.

Lead In/Out  Enable Lead in/out.  Make all Length and Radius values equal to 60% of the tool diameter.

Linking Parameters  Clearance = 2.0" (Absolute).  Retract =1.0" (Absolute).  Feed plane = 0.1" (Absolute).  Top of stock = 0.0" (Absolute).  Depth = -0.15" (Absolute).

NOTE: The absolute values are measured from the 4.0" diameter cylinder, setup in the Rotary axis control page.

Rotary Axis Control  Enable Axis Substitution and Substitute X axis.  Enable CCW.  Enter Rotary diameter 4.0".

Backplot/Verify Options  From the Toolpaths Manager, select the Backplot/Verify Options icon.  Enable Cylinder and then setthe values as shown.

UNROLL THE GEOMETRY Change the main Level to 2 and name it "Unrolled Geometry" Xform 

Roll.

 Using single chaining selection, select the two highlighted arcs in the same direction as shown.

 Enable Copy.

 Enable Unroll.  Rotate about X axis.  Enable CCW.  Diameter 2.5" (Press Enter).  Angle tolerance 0.5.  Positioning = 0 degrees.  Type Line/Arcs.

 Fit the geometry to the screen and you should see the two lines generated in the result color (magenta), as shown.

CREATE EXTRA GEOMETRY TO BE ABLE TO COMPLETELY MACHINE THE OPEN AREAS  Using the Create Line Parallel command offset the lines outside by 0.25" (the radius of the tool).  Create two lines using the Line endpoint command to close the rectangle as shown.

Make visible only Level 1, the flat geometry

USE POCKET TOOLPATH TO MACHINE THE PART Toolpaths 

Pocket.

 Select the flat rectangle.

Linking Parameters page  Clearance = 2.0" (Absolute) and enable Use clearance only at the start and end of operation.  Feed Plane = 0.1 (Absolute).  Retract =0.1" (Absolute).  Top of stock = 0.25" (Absolute).  Depth = 0.0" (Absolute).

NOTE: The absolute values are measured from the 4.0" diameter cylinder, setup in the Rotary axis control page.

Rotary Axis Control  Enable Axis Substitution and Substitute Y axis.  Enable CCW.  Enter Rotary diameter 2.5".

Backplot the toolpath  Make sure that Simulate Axis Substitution is enabled in Backplot Options.

SET THE STOCK AS CYLINDER IN THE STOCK SETUP  Shape set to Cylindrical; Axis X.  Diameter 3.0".  Length 2.0".  Stock Origin X-2, Y0, Z0.

Change the graphic view to Right Side and backplot the toolpath again

NOTE: The side of the tool does not machine the pocket walls. Rolldie C-hook toolpath is designed to compensate to the side of the tool and not to the center of the tool as the pocket or the contour toolpaths are designed.

ROLLDIE C-HOOK

ROLLDIE C-HOOK The Rolldie C-Hook creates toolpaths around a rotary axis. The toolpath can be rounded or squared on outside sharp corners. When a tapered tool is used, the tool can run up and down the crease formed at the intersection of two walls at an inside sharp corner.

USING ROLLDIE C-HOOK TO MACHINE WITH THE SIDE OF THE TOOL  Hold-down Alt key and enter C.  Select Rolldie from the C-Hook directory.  From the Chaining dialog box, enable Single button and select the two highlighted lines in the same directions as shown.

Toolpath Type  Contour should be enabled.

Tool  Select the 1/2" Flat Endmill.

Cut Parameters  Compensation direction set to Right.

Linking Parameters  Clearance = 1.0" (Absolute).  Feed plane = 0.5" (Absolute).  Top of stock = 0.25" (Absolute).  Depth = 0.0" (Absolute).

Rotary Axis Control  Enable Axis substitution and Substitute Y axis.  Enable CW.  Enter Rotary diameter 2.5".  Enable Unroll.

ROLLDIE C-HOOK

Rolldie Parameters  Chordal deviation = 0.001".  Corners set to square.  Enable Z = Radius.  Pre rolled about X.

NOTE: The system might change the tool type and size and you might need to reselect the 1/2" Flat Endmill. Backplot the toolpath from Right Side view  Make sure that Simulate Axis Substitution is enabled in Backplot Options.

CREATE THE GEOMETRY FOR THE HELIX

CREATE THE GEOMETRY FOR THE HELIX NOTE: The part geometry can be downloaded from www.emastercam.com. Create the horizontal line Create  Line. 

Endpoints.

 Sketch the line starting in the origin.  Enable Horizontal icon and enter the Length = 8.0".  Select the Apply button to continue in the same command.

Create the Vertical line NOTE: To calculate the length of the line use your computer calculator (start/run type "calc"). Enter pi* 2*4. Highlight the result value and press Ctrl C to copy.  Sketch the line starting in the origin.  Enable Vertical icon and enter the Length = Ctrl V (to paste the value).  Select the OK button to exit the command.

Create Line Parallel  Create a parallel line with the horizontal line, through the upper endpoint of the vertical line.

Create the hypotenuse of the right angle triangle as shown in the drawing  Disable Vertical icon and select the endpoints of the lines.  Select the OK button to exit the command.

Delete the two horizontal lines and the vertical line

Linking Parameters  Clearance = 2.0" (Absolute).  Retract =1.0" (Absolute).  Feed plane = 0.1" (Incremental).  Top of stock = 0.0" (Absolute).  Depth = -0.50" (Absolute).

NOTE: The absolute values are measured from the 4.0" diameter cylinder, setup in the Rotary axis control page.
