This interesting tour ended after taking a photograph with the owner of the collision repair centre.
Collision Repair Centre Field Trip Report Introduction
On 11 October 2013, 4 students from UTHM went on a trip to BP SIN HUAT Collision Repair Centre in order to learn more about the process of repairing vehicles. We arrived there around10.00am. We planned to visit every department and gather various information about this “Ultimate Collision Repair Centre”.
Trip Objectives There are 4 objectives in total. Firstly, we wanted to get to know the different departments at the collision repair centre.Secondly, we wanted to find out the leading causes of the need for vehicle repair. Furthermore, we wanted to find out the volume of vehicles repaired monthly at this collision repair centre. Last but not least, we wanted to find out the step-by-step procedure of repairing a car at this collision repair centre. Field observation We were assisted by the owner of the repair centre, Mr Ang PengHee, who explained to us in detail about his collision repair centre. During the tour, we took down some notes and pictures about this repair centre. After the tour, we discovered that there are five departments in this repair centre. There were Administration, Panel beating, Spray Painting ,Mechatronics and Warehouse. SPRAY PAINTING
ADMINISTRATION
PANEL BEATING
WAREHOUSE
MECHATRONICS
We had also found out the leading causes of the need for vehicle repair when we interviewed Mr Ang. The main cause was due to accidents, the second was own repairs which meant that the customers send their cars in themselves and the last cause is breakdowns. According to the Mr Ang, the volume of vehicles repaired was around 60 vehicles. Mr Ang had also gave us an insightregarding the step-by-step procedure of repairing a car in this collision repair centre. We were given a step-by-step table which was easy to understand. Procedure of Body Repair and Paint Refinish 1 Damaged Vehicle arrives 2 Estimate cost& produce quote to customer 3 Produce job number 4 Panel repair / replacement stage 5 Intermediate inspection of work 6 Paint Refinish Stage 7 Refinished Paint inspection 8 Assembly stage 9 Final inspection 10 Delivery to customer
When the damaged vehicle arrives, the estimated cost of repair of the damaged vehicle has to be done by the repair centre and produced to the customer. After that, a job number is assigned to the vehicle to easily track the progress of the damaged vehicle. The damaged vehicle will be sent to various departments based on its damage. An intermediate inspection will be carried out when the body repair is completed. After that, the paint of the vehicle will be refinished. An inspection of the paint job will also be carried out. When the body repair and paint refinish has been completed, the repaired car will be sent to the assembly stage for all equipments and fittings to be reinstalled in the vehicle. The last step before delivery to the customer,is a final inspection to ensure the quality of repairs and paint jobs. These are some interesting pictures we took during the tour.
Conclusion Our trip ended at 12.00pm. It can be concluded that the trip was successful as all our objectives were achieved. We all learned something new and beneficial about the collision repair centre. We highly recommend this trip to other mechanical engineering students who are interested to learn more about vehicles.
