COURSE
1 SUCCESS ON YOUR JOB
INTRODUCTION Can you remember a time when you were much younger and dreamt about working? A lot of us were inspired by the thoughts of being called Lawyers, Engineers, Doctors etc and couldn’t wait to launch out into fulfilling our career paths after primary school. We were so consumed with the dream so much that at early stages, we loved to be called junior engineer, young doctor etc. However, growing up seemed to have changed everything. Some statistics have it that seven out of ten people despise the work they currently do or the company they work for. This is not meant to be so because regardless of your position in the organization or your profession, God wants you to enjoy and excel in your work. In all facets of life and your work place, you can experience all-round success and fulfillment. In this course, you will understand and review what you think has been holding you back and gain insight on how to succeed on your job.
CHAPTER ONE WORK The story was told of a research that was carried out by doctors several years ago. The research was on patients who had heart problems. The research revealed that most of the patients developed their heart problems on Mondays. The doctors sought to find out why and could only come to the conclusion that it was because those people had to go to work on Mondays. Most people do not like work. Their worst days are Mondays and their best days are Fridays. However, the wisest man said, “For a man to rejoice in his labour, it is the gift of God.”1 God wants us to enjoy our work. God wants to prosper you on your job. Work was not designed by God to be a curse; it was designed to be a blessing. In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve instructions to dress and keep the garden. Then they were to eat the fruit of it. The scripture says: “The Lord will open to you His good treasure; the heavens to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand…….”2 Your work is one of the major means by which God will bless you. Work is your tool for achieving your dreams and blessing others. Today, I want you to review your present job. Can it take you to your destination in life?
CHAPTER TWO REVIEW YOUR PRESENT JOB Some statistics have indicated that seven out of ten people despise the work they do or the company they work for. This is unfortunate because it is difficult to breakthrough and rise on a job that frustrates. Dear friend, your best kind of work should be whatever creates the highest level of joy within you. “...You shall rejoice in all to which you have put your hand...”1 I want you to review your present job now. Ask the following questions: 1.
Am I really happy with what I am presently doing? What creates excitement
and enthusiasm in you is a pointer to the place of your breakthrough. 2.
Are my dominant gifts and talents being developed? Wealth usually flows to
those who focus on their most prominent talents. 3.
Am I doing the highest quality of work that I am capable of? Excellence
guarantees promotion. Unfortunately, many cultivate the habit of mediocrity in their daily duties. 4.
Is my present job a short-term or a long-term goal? Is it a holiday job or
something to keep me busy for a short time? 5.
Is God happy with what I am doing now? If you sow your seeds in the wrong
soil, you cannot reap a good harvest. Do not stay where God has not assigned you. God will help you find your place.
CHAPTER THREE JOB DISSATISFACTION God wants you to succeed on your job. If you are unhappy with your present work, it is good to find out why. Let us consider some reasons why you may be dissatisfied with your present job. 1. Unhappiness in your home: Your job requires emotional energy, passion and enthusiasm. However, if the situation in your home is draining you emotionally, it will affect your job. You must take deliberate steps to achieve peace and harmony in your home. 2. Lack of challenges in your present position: If you are really growing in knowledge and skill, you will outgrow your present position. You may need to set more challenging goals for yourself or seek for a more challenging job. 3. Disadvantages that you did not realize before: You may not be able to predict how a job is until you start. Then suddenly, you may realize that it is affecting your relationship with God and your family or it does not have a promising future. You need to decide what is more important and organize accordingly. 4. Conflicts with fellow employees: Research has shown that most people lose their jobs because they cannot work effectively with others. They create conflict and disaffection within the organization. You need to sharpen your relationship skills. Dear friend, God wants your work to be exciting and enjoyable. He wants you to excel.
CHAPTER FOUR CHARACTER TRAITS FOR SUCCESS Let us consider a few of the character traits that are necessary for success. MEEKNESS Meekness or humility is an indispensable character trait in our quest for success. Meekness is the key to greatness. To be meek simply means that we do not overestimate ourselves. We realize that without God, we can achieve nothing. All that we are and all that we have are a direct result of the mercy of God. There is nothing we have that we did not receive. The opposite of meekness is pride. Pride is a major character fault that robs people of success, however gifted they may be. Like the saying goes; “Pride goes before a fall.” Whoever we are, we are made by God. To be self-made is to be self-destroyed. The meeker we are, the greater we will be. SELF-CONTROL Another character trait required for success is self-control. The one who will conquer the world must first conquer himself. God has given us appetite for the good things of life like food, drink, sleep, sex and so on. However, we abuse these things when we overindulge ourselves in them. Every time we disobey God in order to enjoy these things, we lose our moral authority over the spiritual forces that control life. We must gain control over our thoughts, emotions and actions. A sound character makes the difference between success and failure.
CHAPTER FIVE ACHIEVING SUCCESS ON YOUR JOB To achieve success on your job, I encourage you to do the following: 1.
Dress the part. Every actor or actress is required to wear a costume that suits the part they are acting in a play. Likewise, your dressing should reflect where you are going, not where you are coming from. It is simply human nature for people to judge you by your appearance. God Himself said that man looks on the outward appearance.1 You must therefore realize that people will see you before they hear you. Archbishop Benson Idahosa once said that the way you dress is the way you will be addressed. Your physical appearance is a major point of consideration in an interview. So, dress the part.
2.
Develop your skills. A wise man said, “If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success.”2 You may not be able to rise above your level of skill. Develop your skills on a continuous basis. Attend seminars. Read books relating to your career. Subscribe to magazines. Seek advice from those who are ahead of you. Practice excellence on your current job. Become an expert in your field. Sharpening your skill is like sharpening your ax. It will increase your effectiveness and productivity. Time spent developing your skill is time wisely invested. Develop your skills. 3. Have a good attitude. Your attitude towards people, life and work will determine whether you will rise to the top or stay where you are. Your attitude will determine your altitude. Have the attitude of a servant. Respect your employer. See yourself as ultimately working for God as you work for your employer. Do not complain, grumble, slander, gossip or backbite in the office.
Do not have an attitude of laziness. Do not steal. Appreciate the worth of the people you work with. Be friendly. Be co-operative. Keep confidences. Do not try to put others down. A good attitude is one of your most valuable assets in life. 4. Create a Positive Climate. When God created man, He put man in the Garden of Eden. That tells us that God is interested in the atmosphere around our lives. A positive atmosphere releases God’s presence and inspires creativity. The difference between heaven and hell has to do with the atmosphere and climate in them. Some people experience heaven on earth while others go through hell. You can create a positive atmosphere around yourself; an atmosphere of peace, joy, faith and integrity. Be enthusiastic. Speak positive words. Ignore gossip. Organize your work area. Expect the best. You will succeed!
WORKSHEET Are you living that childhood dream of yours now? Is your present work (either as an employee or in business) giving you the pleasure and the fulfillment that you desire? If no, what went wrong? List them.
