Introduction to WCDMA RAN rel. RU50
WCDMA RAN, Rel. RU50, Changes
1 Introduction to WCDMA RAN rel. RU50 1.1 Overview of WCDMA RAN RU50 RU50 offers innovative solutions and features that are aimed at improving: •
LTE interworking –
–
–
–
•
The RAN2980: Measurement Based LTE Layering feature supports the redirection of UE to LTE layer only if measurement results indicate that LTEcapable UE could camp on LTE cell successfully. This ensures seamless LTE camping even if the WCDMA cell has only partial LTE coverage. Both FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE are supported. The RAN3069: RSRQ-based LTE Reselection feature provides support for LTE cell reselection based on the reference signal received quality (RSRQ). This feature assures smooth WCDMA-LTE interworking when in LTE network RSRQ criteria are used for cell reselection and therefore improves end-user experience. The RAN2264: Smart LTE Handover feature introduces inter-RAT WCDMA to LTE handover. This feature supports traffic steering to LTE layers, providing seamless handover experience for the end-users. The RAN1668: HSUPA Compressed Mode for LTE and Inter-frequency Handover feature introduces compressed mode measurements with HSPA active without UL channel type switching to DCH. The feature also introduces basic compressed mode support for performing measurements related to inter-system handover to LTE. The inter-system handover (ISHO) and redirection from HSPA to LTE becomes more reliable when LTE cells are measured before ISHO or redirection.
Operator benefits: Evolution of LTE interworking allows the operator to offer seamless service experience and secures the real-time applications’ performance. Serviceability and monitoring –

With the RAN2554: Transport Configuration Fallback feature, site visits can be avoided when a changed BTS transmission configuration prohibits remote management connections. If after a configuration update the Flexi Multiradio BTS fails to connect to its management network, self healing measures are taken. This applies for failures during normal operation after a configuration-update. The RAN2199: BTS Event Triggered Symptom Data Collection feature introduces automatic fault-triggered BTS symptom data collection. The triggering BTS faults are defined in the Site Configuration File (SCF) using the NetAct Configurator. The immediate data collection following the fault occurrence assists the troubleshooting process. Self-triggered symptom data generation is more accurate and thus more efficient in solving failures. In RU50 EP1, RAN2496: 3GPP Minimization of Drive Tests provides automatic User Equipment (UE) measurements collection and data logging, replacing the manual drive testing that the operators usually perform in their networks. Also in RU50 EP1, RAN2229: Troubleshooting Data Management by NetAct allows a NetAct user to trigger symptom data collection from RNC OMS and IPARNCs, and upload the collected symptom data from them.
Operator benefits:

Introduction to WCDMA RAN rel. RU50
The RAN2963: Data Session Profiling feature provides faster web browsing session for end user. With RAN2179: Dual Band HSDPA 42 Mbps, it is possible to use Dual Cell HSDPA with two carriers located in different frequency bands (example: Carrier 1 in band 2110-2170 MHz and Carrier 2 in band 925-960 MHz). Dual Band HSDPA is therefore very similar to Dual Cell HSDPA, the only difference is at Layer 1: the carriers are in different frequency bands. With this feature, end-user benefits from increased coverage and throughput. The RAN2881: WCDMA and GSM Layer Priorities feature allows idle mode traffic steering according to priorities given for WCDMA and GSM layers. This feature provides end-user higher data rates and faster response times. With the RAN147: RRC Connection Setup Redirection feature, the RNC sends the UE to 2G or 3G, to a new frequency for the next try (In case the initial RRC connection is rejected). This feature helps to reduce failed call attempts and call setup delays. In RU50 EP1, the RAN2546: VHS Receiver for High Speed Train feature introduces a new BTS receiver algorithm for serving UEs moving at speeds from 250 km/h to 350 km/h (155 mph to 217 mph). This can increase throughput and improve the quality of voice calls for UEs moving at high speed, for example in trains. Also in RU50 EP1, RAN1905: DC-HSUPA allows usage of two adjacent WCDMA carriers simultaneously in upload for a single UE. This increases the UL peak bit rate to 11.5 Mbps and increases the average UE upload data rate by up to 100%. It also provides perfect load balancing across uplink carriers, utilising the unused air interface resources.
Operator benefits: HSPA carrier aggregation and improvements to UE throughput helps to boost operator’s revenue from mobile broadband. Site solutions The RAN3017: Additional 6 WCDMA Cell Activation license key enables increase of supported cells in BTS configuration. Step size of one License Key is 6 cells. In RU50 the number of cells can be increased from 12 up to 18. Operator benefits: Increasing traffic, demand for multicarrier, multiband, and multi-sector sites leads operator needs towards high BTS site configurations. This feature enables larger BTS configurations allowing cost effective capacity building especially in traffic hot spot areas. BTS solutions In RU50 EP1, RAN2784: Flexi Lite BTS 1900 MHz introduces the Flexi Lite BTS 1900 (FQFA) - a small, all-in-one base station optimized for indoor and outdoor microcell environments. Operator benefits: In capacity-limited networks, smaller cells can be used to maintain the required system capacity. The product can be used in pico- and micro-cellular applications and also as a coverage fill-in solution.

WCDMA IPA-RNC Changes
2 WCDMA IPA-RNC Changes 2.1 Overview of WCDMA IPA-RNC changes The IPA-RNC product available in RU50 is RNC2600. The following features has been introduced with RU50 RN8.0 SW release: •
RAN3047: RTT Improvement to Enhance User Experience This feature will reduce RTT RNC delay in an end to end environment. The feature provides faster data transfer for interactive applications and background traffic.
The following features has been introduced with RU50 RN8.1 SW release: •
•
RAN2512: Network Resiliency for RNC2600 The feature improves network availability. This feature allows RAN recovery from fatal HW failure of a single controller or the controller's site. When one physical controller has failed, the operator is able to command the earlier-configured and synchronized backup physical controller to take over the responsibility of the failed physical controller. This feature helps to avoid long outages, lasting many hours or days. This feature shortens the controller's outage time in the radio network. RAN2928: DSP Pool Information in Measurements Several DSP processes are executed in the RNC to ensure that the usage of the digital signal processor (DSP) is optimized. The main DSP processes are DSP service pooling and DSP measurement. The former enables the optimal use of the DSPs, while the latter provides data on the: – – – – – –
number of calls based on the service type peak number of connections failed connection attempts number of rejected calls number of connected announcements. CPU load, memory usage and processes number of DSPs
The RAN2928: DSP Pool Information in Measurements feature enhances the accuracy of the DSP measurement and improves DSP resource management. This gives the operator more precise statistical information, which is helpful for network analysis and optimization. Operator has more accurate visibility of the DSP load with this feature. This allows to gain precise measurement data for network analysis and optimization.
2.2 RN8.0 hardware changes This section summarizes the differences in the hardware implementation between releases RN7.0 and RN8.0. RN8.0 does not support RNC196 and RNC450 anymore. The following RNC196 and RNC450 specific hardware items are removed on RN8.0 level.

2.7 RN8.0 command changes 2.7.1 Introduction to MML changes between releases RN7.0 and RN8.0 The purpose of this document is to describe, on the RN8.0 release level, the MML commands that are used in the management interfaces (such as NetAct and local management interfaces) of Radio Network Controller. This document describes the changes that have been made to MML programs between releases RN7.0 and RN8.0. MMLs with only a few internal changes or guide text changes are not listed in this document. It is possible that command sequences must be modified due to the changes summarised in this document. This document may contain information which is irrelevant to the customer. The relevance of the information depends on the delivered software build. For example, some MML programs are optional and are not automatically included in the software build. For more detailed descriptions please see the corresponding command and operating descriptions.

3 Multicontroller RNC changes 3.1 Overview of Multicontroller RNC changes RU50 EP1 introduces the following mcRNC product improvements: RAN2251: Automatic mcRNC Resource Optimization feature The RAN2251: Automatic mcRNC Resource Optimization feature enables optimal usage of the User Plane and Control Plane resources for the mcRNC's UE-specific Processing Unit (USPU). This feature benefits the operator in the following way:
•
– – –
optimal use of hardware resources in case of unbalanced User Plane and Control Plane load of the USPU unit lower risk of overload situation and thus KPI degradation higher capacity and throughput if Control and User Plane loads are unbalanced
RAN2959: mcRNC Step 7 Support feature This feature adds capacity step 7 (S7-B2) support to the mcRNC HW Rel.2 configurations and increases overall mcRNC capacity to reach the maximum controller's hardware configuration. The mcRNC step 7 contains eight BCN-B modules with Octeon II add-in cards. This feature benefits the operator as follows:
•
– – –
high capacity RNC capacity expansion from lower capacity step to higher capacity step provides smooth mcRNC HW capacity expansion
RAN2671: Upgrading of mcBSC to mcRNC feature This feature allows to obtain mcRNC Rel.2 HW module from mcBSC. Secure mcBSC hardware investment in GSM by reuse of mcBSC HW module(s) for mcRNC in WCDMA network.

3.3 mcRNC4.1 SCLI command changes Multicontroller RNC (mcRNC) uses a structured command line interface (SCLI) for configuration, administration, and monitoring tasks. The SCLI shell of mcRNC, fsclish, is an extension of the command line interface (CLI) that makes it easier to find and browse commands. With SCLI, the user can browse available commands in a command syntax tree view, use the command autocompletion function, and access context sensitive help. For information on commands used in mcRNC4.1 release, see Multicontroller RNC SCLI Commands. Changes •
The subs-trace command has been removed from the main level of the command hierarchy and is now available only under the radio-network menu.
3.4 mcRNC measurement changes 3.4.1 mcRNC Radio Network measurements This section lists the changes in mcRNC Radio Network measurements introduced in mcRNC4.1 release, that is, changes from mcRNC3.0 to mcRNC4.1. The Radio Network measurements are common for mcRNC and IPA-RNC. For details on RNW measurement changes, see IPA-RNC Radio Network measurements. New measurements • •

Flexi Direct RNC changes
WCDMA RAN, Rel. RU50, Changes
4 Flexi Direct RNC changes 4.1 Overview of Flexi Direct RNC changes RU50 introduces some new Flexi Direct RNC product improvements: •
LTE interoperation New features have been introduced to increase interoperability with LTE and reduce delays when switching from WCDMA. For more details, see the features: – – –
•
RAN2980: Measurement Based LTE Layering, RAN1668: HSUPA Compressed Mode for LTE and Inter-frequency Handover, and RAN2264: Smart LTE Handover
in Flexi Direct RU50 Feature Descriptions and Instructions. Throughput and coverage improvements – – –
With the new feature RAN2179: Dual Band HSDPA 42 Mbps, multiple carrier frequencies can be used to provide Dual Cell HSDPA service. RAN1913: High Speed Cell_FACH allows HSPA to be used in Cell_FACH state. Services for sending frequent but small packets can be handled more efficiently. RAN1645: HSUPA 16QAM enables the 11.5 Mbit/s peak upload data rate with 16QAM.
For more details on these features, see Flexi Direct RU50 Feature Descriptions and Instructions.

WCDMA BTS and transmission changes
WCDMA RAN, Rel. RU50, Changes
5 WCDMA BTS and transmission changes 5.1 Overview of WCDMA BTS changes The RU50 release introduces the following solutions in the WCDMA BTS area: •
Site solutions The RAN3017: Additional 6 WCDMA Cell Activation license key enables increase of supported cells in BTS configuration. Step size of one License Key is 6 cells. In RU50 the number of cells can be increased from 12 up to 18. Increasing traffic, demand for multicarrier, multiband, and multi-sector sites leads operator needs towards high BTS site configurations. This feature enables larger BTS configurations allowing cost effective capacity building especially in traffic hot spot areas.
The feature improves the reliability of the RF sharing solution, which is also based on temporary Radio Master role functionality. • •
•
•
•
•
RAN3010: 24 Cell Support with Flexi FSMF + FSMD/E System Modules Up to 24 cells per BTS is supported with FSMF + FSMD/E System Modules. RAN2784: Flexi Lite BTS 1900 MHz Flexi Lite BTS 1900 (FQFA) is a small, all-in-one base station optimized for indoor and outdoor microcell environment. The product design, hardware and software is based on the award winning Flexi Multiradio BTS platform. RAN2998: Flexi RRH 2TX 2100 (FRGY) This feature introduces Flexi Multiradio Remote RF Head (RRH) FRGY with 2TX/2RX for 3GPP band I (1920-1980 MHz uplink, 2110-2170 MHz downlink). RAN2732: Flexi System Module Extension, FSMF + FSMD/E This feature introduces support for new Flexi BTS configurations that can consist of both Flexi Multiradio BTS System Module (FSMD/E) and Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS System Module (FSMF). RAN2733: Flexi Multiradio System Module Extension, FSMF + FSMF This feature introduces support for new configurations that can be based on two Flexi Multiradio 10 BTS System Modules (FSMFs). In such configuration one FSMF acts as a master and the second one as an extension (slave) unit. RG602339/RAN3001/LTE1710: Sync Hub Direct Forward Sync Hub Direct Forward provides a more efficient and accurate phase/time synchronization distribution to all BTSs at the same site, regardless if RF sharing is used or not. This allows all RF sharing sites to support applications that require phase/time synchronization such as Dynamic Frequency and Channel Allocation (DFCA), Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC) and Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA). The feature improves the reliability of the RF sharing solution, which is also based on temporary Radio Master role functionality.
References to UltraSite, MetroSite, and AXC products have been removed throughout the documents due to the products’ phase out.
