Router, Bridge, and Gateway ROUTER Definition of Router Router is a nerwork peripheral that is used to connect multiple network althoutgh they use different network technology. The main function of router is to forward one package from one segment to another. But now, router is more identic as tools that used to connect between the local network in your office or even your home to connect to internet. The function is still same that connect between the two different network. The router will forward all the request from your local network to the internet. The Advantage of Router Router can isolated the broadcast traffic. This ability can reduce the network task because this type of traffic can incubated in only one network. Flexibility. Router can used in any network topology. Anything for ex : ring, star, tree and others. And don’t considerate to delay of time. Priority management. Router can be implement the priority configuration between the protocol Problem resolve. Router form the obstacle among LAN and have possibility to isolated the problem in that LAN Router is a smart device. Generally it can determine the optimize line between two system. The Disadvantage of Router Depends on the protocol. Router that work on network OSI layer only can forward the traffic in that protocol. Expensive. Router is more expensive than bridge because router have more complex fiture and the process overhead on router is more big. So, the throughput that earn is lower than bridge. Unreachble system. The used o routing of static table caused of a few system can reach by other system
BRIDGE
The Deifinition of Bridge Bridge is a network peripheral that is used to connect one LAN to another LAN. Bridge can connect the different network type. For example is Ethernet and Fast Ethernet or even the same netwotk type. This tools work on a data link layer model OSI. Because of this bridge can connect the computer network that using different transmition method or medium access control. Bridge can also discover the link address that exist in each device that connect with it and manage frame flow based on the address. Bridge map the Ethernet address of any existing node or point on each network segment and allow only the necessary data traffic across the bridge. When receiving a packet, the bridge determines the destination and source segments. If the same segment, the packet will be rejected, and if different segment, packages are forwarded to the destination segment. Thus the bridge also prevents corrupted message so as not to spread out from one segment. Bridge work on the physical layer and data link layer, so that will affect the performance of the LAN when frequent communication systems that are in different LAN connected by the Bridge.
The Comparisaion between router and bridge
The configuration of router is more complex than bridge configuration. Router is smarter than bridge because router can determine the line more optimal than Bridge. Router is run in third model of OSI layer while bridge run in the second model of OSI layer. Router is more compatible as the connector for the various nework segment that operate the
different network protocol. Router can change the network bandwitch. Bridge is more suitable as the connector with the same network protocol.
GATEWAY Gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to another network. On the Internet, a node or stopping point can be either a gateway node or a host (end-point) node. Both the computers of Internet users and the computers that serve pages to users are host nodes. The computers that control traffic within your company's network or at your local Internet service provider (ISP) are gateway nodes.Default Gateway. In the network for an enterprise, a computer server acting as a gateway node is often also acting as a proxy server and a firewall server. A gateway is often associated with both a router, which knows where
to direct a given packet of data that arrives at the gateway, and a switch, which furnishes the actual path in and out of the gateway for a given packet.
