Roulette Betting Systems In Roulette there are only betting systems and not strategies. When in use, a system will have no effect on the house advantage (whereas a strategy will). In Blackjack, a system (if carefully considered) can be used as a strategy; however, in roulette, no amount of consideration will ever allow a system to have an effect on the house edge. Nonetheless, the major systems in use should be considered.

Martingale In this system, each time the player loses, he is advised to double his bet. The idea is that when he does win, he’s left with a profit equal to his first bet – this way he leaves the table in the same position he started in. While this system may have great allure, the reality is the player’s loss rate can increase very quickly.

Martingale The ball does not purposely vary where it lands. It is a gambler’s fallacy that past random events affect future random events. Whether or not you double your bet, the house will maintain an advantage of between 2.7 and 7%. And whether or not you double your bet, the ball will still fall at random. Ultimately, the odds are still pitted against you. So, would it really be wise to be doubling your bet each time you lose, while the odds are still against you?

Grand Martingale This is a supercharged version of the Martingale: not only should a player double his bet after a loss but, he is expected to add a unit! If the player starts with £5 and then loses, using the Grand Martingale system he is expected to bet £15 on the next bet. On a win, this system can be very rewarding. But, when a player is continuously losing, it can be infuriating, discouraging, and overwhelming.

Labouchére System This is also known as the cancellation system. To use such a strategy, a player would first have to decide how much money he would want to win in the session of playing. The player would then write down a list of positive numbers that add up to that predetermined amount. With each bet, the player stakes an amount equal to the sum of the first and last numbers on the list.

Labouchére System If the player wins the bet, the two amounts are removed from the list but, if the player loses the bet, the total is added to the end of the list and the amount lost. The process continues until the player has run out of money to wager or the desired amount of money has been won.

Labouchére System It should be noted that this system is meant to be applied to even money Roulette propositions like Even/Odd, Red/Black or 1-18, 19-36. While a cancellation system isn’t considered as risky as a Martingale or Grand Martingale, there remains the possibility that it can result in a huge loss of money.

D’Alembert System Also known as ‘montant et demontant’ (upwards and downwards), this system has a number of similarities to the Martingale system, one of them being that it falls prey to the gambler’s fallacy. The system is founded on French mathematician Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert’s pyramid system and mathematical equilibrium.

The Fibonacci System The Fibonacci system is based on the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence of numbers introduced to the West by Leonardo Fibonacci in his Liber Abaci. The Liber Abaci posed and solved a problem involving the growth of the populations of rabbits based on idealized assumptions.

The Fibonacci System In the sequence, each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. The sequence starts with 0 and 1. 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987… The higher one moves in the sequence, the closer one will be to approaching the golden ratio (approximately 1:1.618).

The Fibonacci System Now, the Fibonacci system applies the basic principle in which each number in the sequence is equal to the sum of the previous two numbers. The primary difference is that the system will begin at one betting unit, and not zero. Should the player lose using the Fibonacci system, the player will increase the bet size according to the Fibonacci sequence.

The Fibonacci System If the player wins, the sequence does not end and the player does not go back to the original unit. Rather, the player will cross out the last two units and bet the new number. The sequence ends once the player is back to betting one unit. If you bet 21 units and win, the player crosses out 21 and 13 and bet 8. This continues until the player has won betting one unit.

The Fibonacci System The Fibonacci system is more cost effective and leisurely than the Martingale system. However, it is most certainly does not guarantee a win. In fact, no system does. No matter how carefully calculated, in roulette, no system will have an effect on house edge.
