About the music This arrangement of Be Thou My Vision represents my first attempt at composing for solo guitar. It was 2003 and I was a freshman at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. I remember sitting on my couch at home and discovering this wonderful melody in a hymnal. The tune was printed in E flat (which is not ideal for the guitar) so I opted for D major in drop-D tuning. After the arrangement was complete, I showed it to my teacher, Scott Johnston. He was excited about the piece and asked me to perform it at my upcoming jury. I sketched out a rough copy of the score and brought it to the final exam. After the performance, the jurors made some nice comments about the arrangement and I left. It was this experience which inspired me to continue composing and now, looking back, I am so thankful for all of the similar encouragements God has provided along the way. –Jonathan Roth (Los Angeles, California, 2007)
