Flapping Bat

Intermediate

I got the idea to design a flapping bat after happening upon Tom Hull’s Flapping Bat on YouTube. My original idea was to try to make a simpler flapping bat than his, but, obviously, that ambition did not come to fruition!

I usually perform this model following the Pop-up Housewife (page 114) and Pop-up Househusband (page 118). Hold up the closed card and say, “What kind of house is this?” To whatever the audience says, respond, “No, this is Batman’s house. Should we open it?” [Audience says, “Ya.”] “I think we’d better knock on the door first. Ready, set, everyone say, ‘Knock, knock!’” [Knock on the house as the audience says, “Knock, Knock!”] Peek into the closed card and say, “Hmm, looks like he’s not home. Well, then, lets open it. Ready set everyone say, ‘Pop-up!’” [Audience says, “Pop-up!”] Open the card and exclaim, “It’s Batman! But the MAN left, so now it’s just the BAT! Everyone flap your wings like a bat!”

You wanna see it?” [Audience says, “Ya!”] “Ready, set, everyone say, ‘Pop-up!’” [Audience says, “Pop-up.”] Close your eyes and pretend to tremble in fear as you slowly open the card and show it the audience. Say, “Isn’t it so scary!!! [Audience says, “No, it’s just a bird.”] Answer, “It’s just a bird??? Hmm, where’d the monster go? I’ll bet it was so scary that it scared itself away! Well, say ‘Bye bye birdie.’” [Audience says, “Bye, bye birdie.”] Close it and quip, “That card was for the birds!”

The Kissing Love Birds are complete and completely in love! In order to avoid tearing the paper bird individually before trying to make them The action is similar to the Traditional Flapping Bird (page 15) except that it is caused by pulling each bird’s head instead of by pulling its tail. When each bird y, hold the model as shown above and pull your hands apart and the birds will simultaneously their wings. Since the heads remain stationary, the action really amounts to pulling the bodies away from the heads rather than pulling the heads from the bodies. It’s a lot less gruesome than it sounds!

Pick up the model, one hand holding at the black dot and the other hand holding the same place behind and pull your hands apart.

Hold up the closed card, look at it, and quickly put it back in the box a say, “Oh I can’t show you that one. It’s a PG13 model and you guys are only 10 years old. [Audience says, “Please show it to us!”] Say, “Sorry, it’s too sexy” [Audience yells, “SHOW IT TO US!”] “Alright I’ll show it to you, but you have to close your eyes.” [Audience closes their eyes] “OK, I showed it to you. Next model!” [Audience yells, “SHOW IT TO US!”] “OK! Ready, set, everyone say, ‘Pop-up!’” [Audience says, “Pop-up.”] Open and show the model and say, “You see, it’s two flapping birds KISSING! Everyone say, ‘Eewww!’” [Audience says, “Eewww!”] Answer, “See? I told you you’re too young to see it and you didn’t listen!

Star Bird Pop-up Card Excerpt from Origami Pop-ups to Amaze and Amuse

By Jeremy Shafer ©2008

Intermediate

What exactly is a Star Bird? Previously, it was a Milton Bradley Space Ship toy popular in the 1980’s. But since that fad is dead, a new definition must be found, and what better time than now!... So, I hereby declare Star Bird to be defined as any bird that can transform into a star. And, so far, I know of only one – the bird in this origami pop-up card! And now you too can get in on this trendy new trend and own your very own Star Bird today!

[Audience raises eyebrows.] Say, “What, you don’t think it’s a star?! Look it can even dance!” (step 38) [Audience remains unconvinced] “I’ll show you that it’s a star! Turn the model over, revealing the star, and exclaim, “You see?! I told you it was the star of the show! Never doubt me again!”

I better put this model away!”
