Eisenstein: Metric Montage • Shots cut to conform to pre-determined sequence length. • Disregards content of shot • Evokes a response based essentially on the rhythm of the edits: “mechanical” – equal shot length escalating tension – shots becoming shorter

Eisenstein: Rhythmic Montage • Cutting based on length of shot, but also sympathetic to movement within each shot

Rhythm & pace of editing needs to consider not only the length (duration) of each shot, but also the content of the shot itself.
