RED ROSES There are pretty young women everywhere. And there are young men with nice smiles. In every town, in every city, ty, young men are lo oking at young women, women , and young women are smiling at them. They look, they meet, they talk, tal k, they laugh l augh . . . happ ha ppy y days, sweet sweet nights night s - it’ it ’s love love.. Will looks at Anna. She is a pretty young woman, and he wants to meet her. But how? He can hear her guitar, but he cannot find her. Anna looks at Will. She wants to meet him too. But where is he? Will is walking along the street, when he sees a young woman with a guitar. ‘H m m - a guitar!’ he thinks. ‘I m ust play play my gu itar more often.’ Then he looks at the young woman. ‘She’s nice!’ he thinks, and he smiles at her. Anna’s face is pink, and she looks away. Will goes into Grandview Apartments.

Just then, Vicki arrives in her car. ‘H el lo , A n n a ,’ she says. says. ‘Are you yo u OK? OK ? Your face is is a bit pink. Vicki talks to Anna, but Anna is thinking about the young man. ‘W h o is he?’ he ?’ she thin ks . ‘Do es he h e liv live in the building? Who are the roses for? His wife? His girlfriend? His mother?’

Gran makes Will some coffee. She asks him a question, but Will does not answer. ‘Will,

Later, Will says goodbye to his gran. Then he gets into his car and drives away. In the car he thinks about the young woman with the guitar. ‘Where does she live?’ he thinks. ‘Does she live in one of the apartments? Or has she got a friend there? How can I meet her? Who is she?’ 7

Five minutes later, Anna and Vicki arrive outside the apartment building. ‘G oo dn ig ht , Vicki,’ says says An na. ‘Qu ick - go inside ,’ says says Vick Vicki. i. ‘Jus ‘Jus t th ink - you walk out o f the elevato elevator, r, and there is is a young m an w ith a bunch of roses. roses. And he says says— —’ ‘O h be qu ie t,’ laughs Ann a. ‘See you tom orr ow .’

Will is visiting his gran again. ‘It’s a lovely day, Will,’ she says. ‘Let’s have our coffee on the balcony.’ Will and his gran are sitting on the balcony in the sun, when suddenly Will hears a guitar. ‘Listen Lis ten!’ !’ he says says.. ‘T h a t ’s a guitar . W h er e’ e’ss it co m ing in g from ?’ H e stands up and looks arou nd , but he ca nn ot see see the guitar. ‘Excuse me, G ra n ,’ he say says. ‘I ‘I - er - bac k s oon! ’ An d he runs out of the apartment.

Will runs along the corridor. Where is the guitar? And who is playing it? He stops outside an apartment and listens. Nothing. ‘Per hap s it ’s ou ts id e, ’ he think s. ‘Perh aps sh e’ e’ss on h er balcony.’ So he goes down in the elevator and goes outside. Upstairs, Anna takes her guitar and goes inside. She closes the door to the balcony. ‘T h a t ’s it for today,’ to day,’ she thin ks. ks .

Will looks at all the balconies, but he cannot see or hear a guitar. H e goes goes back to his gra n’s n’s ap artm en t. ‘Are you yo u all righ ri gh t, d e a r? ’ she says. ‘Yes tha nk s, G r a n ,’ says Will. Will. ‘It’s ‘It’s jus t - oh , i t’s t’s n o t important. Well, it is important, but . . .’ And Will tells Gran about the girl with the guitar.

A week later, Anna is coming home. She can see a young man near the apartment building, and he is carrying a bunc h of roses roses - pin k roses tod today. ay. But he is is no t looking , and he does not see her. Anna walks more quickly. But when she gets to the building, there is nobody there. She gets into the elevator. There is nobody in the elevator elevator,, but she can smell roses roses - beau tiful pin k roses. roses.

Later Anna gets up. ‘I m us t go now,’ she say says. s. ‘T ‘T h a n k yo u for the coff ee.’ ‘Go odb ye, d ear,’ says says Gr an , an d A nn a goes out. out. ‘W h at a nice girl,’ G ra n th inks . ‘But - just a minute . Later that week Vicki talks to Anna. ‘I’m having a party on Saturday,’ she say says. s. ‘C ‘C an you c om e?’ ‘Yes, of c ou rse !’ says says An na . ‘Your par tie s are always wonde wonderful.’ rful.’ Vicki calls her brother. ‘Come to my party on Saturday, Ja m es ,’ she sa says, ys, ‘and ‘and brin g some frie nd s.’ On Saturday, James and his friends arrive at Vicki’s house. ‘Hi , Vicki,’ says says Jam es. ‘M ee t m y friends. Th is is Tom, and Daniel Danie l - and Will. Wil l.’’

Just then, Vicki’s phone rings. ‘I’m I’m sorry, Vic ki,’ says A nn a. ‘I c a n ’t com e to yo ur party, because I’m not feeling well.’ ‘O h A nna ! I’m I’m sorry, to o , ’ says Vicki. Vicki. ‘Well, ‘Well, stay stay in bed , and get better soon.’ Vicki’s party is wonderful. Will meets Natalie, and Jane, and Katie. But he does not meet Anna.

ow it’s October. Will visits his gran, but he does not see Anna. He walks along the corridor, but he

does not hear a guitar. ‘W he re is she?’ he think thi nk s. Anna visits her family for a week, then she comes back to her apartment. She looks for Will, but she does not see him. ‘Th er e are lots lots of m en !’ says says Vicki Vicki,, bu t A nn a ca n n ot forget Will.

Then Gran goes to hospital for two weeks. One day Will visits her there. ‘H o w are you today, today, G ra n ?’ he asks. ‘Very Very well well th a n k you, dear. I ’m g oin g ho m e o n Friday.’ Friday.’ ‘T h a t ’s g o o d ,’ says says Will. Will. ‘Per ‘Per hap s I can get som e things for you on Thu rsday and take them to the apa rtm en t.’ ‘T h a t ’s very nice of y ou, W ill,’ says says G ra n.

After work on Thursday Will goes to the shops and gets some things for Gran. He gets some roses, too, and he puts everything in his car. Suddenly it begins to rain. Will is getting into his car when he sees his friend Tom. ‘W he re a re you g oin g, T om ?’ says says Will Will.. ‘H om e —to —to Eastfield.’ ‘I’m I’m going to my g ra n ’s ap ar tm en t in Ch arlt on , so I can take you to Eastfield first.’ ‘Can you take my friend Anna, too? She’s going to Charlton.’ ‘Yes of course,’ says Will.

Tom and Anna get into Will’s car. ‘T h a n k s , W ill,’ says says Tom . ‘I t ’s n o t a very very nice ni gh t! ’ ‘T h a t ’s all all rig ht, T o m ,’ says says Will. Will. H e drives To m ho m e, and then he says to Anna, ‘Where are you going, Anna?’ ‘I’m going to Grandview Apartments. It’s on Park Road.’ ‘T h a t ’s funn fu nny,’ y,’ says Will. Will. ‘ I  I ’m   going to Grandview Apartments.’ ‘Is it her ?’ he think s. ‘T he girl girl w ith t he g u ita r? ’ H e looks in the mirror, but he can’t see her face very well. ‘C an I smell smell roses?’ think s A nna . ‘Is it it him - the m an with the roses?’

Then they are outside the apartment building. They get out of the car, and then they begin to talk at the same time. ‘Oh! It’s you!’ ‘You play the guitar!’ ‘An d you co me here wit h roses!’ ‘Yes —I always bring roses to my gran.’ ‘His g ran !’ thin ks A nn a.

girlfriend.’ ‘She’s coming home from hospital tomorrow, so I’m tak ing som e things to her a p ar tm e n t,’ says says Will. ill. ‘C an I . . . w o u ld yo u like so m e he lp?’ lp ?’ says An na . ‘Yes please!’ says Will.

They go up to Gran’s apartment. Will puts things away, and Anna puts the roses in a vase. ‘T h er e —a —a re n ’t th ey lovely!’ lovely!’ she says. ‘I ‘I like like roses. T h ey smel sm elll w on derfu l.’

‘T h a n k you for your help, A n n a, ’ says says Wil Will. l. ‘T h a t ’s all all rig h t,’ A nn a says. says. ‘L ‘L oo k - w ou ld you like like to come up to my apartment for coffee?’ ‘I’d like to very much,’ says Will. He smiles, and she smiles. They go upstairs. 22

On Friday Gran comes home. Will goes to see her. He is carrying a bunch of red roses. ‘T h a t ’s a big smile, Will!’ Will!’ says G ra n. ‘Red roses - d o n ’t they say “Red roses for love”?’ ‘Well, Gran . . .’ says Will. Ten minutes later, later, Will Will comes comes o ut of G ra n ’s ap artm en t and goes upstairs. He’s carrying a bunch of red roses.
