A Rapid Route to Communication in Real Brazilian Portuguese

LESSON 1

All you need is imagination and a desire to learn...

Welcome to Lesson Number 1 I’m not here to waste your time. By downloading this course you have already shown me that you have a desire to be communicating in Brazilian Portuguese quickly. For this reason I’m not going to waffle on about the importance of learning the language or give you the hard sell about why my course works. I simply want to get you started right away with lesson 1 and prove to you that my course will quickly get you communicating and well on the way towards Brazilian Portuguese excellence. Today you have been given lesson 1 for free, in two days you’ll receive lesson 2 and 2 days later you’ll receive lesson 3. Then you can decide if the course is for you or not. I will give you a bit of an introduction into the course structure and method but I’ll keep it brief. I am assuming that you have read a bit about my methods either on the real Brazilian Portuguese website or elsewhere so I don’t think I need to talk in detail about the benefits of learning only the right words and the power of using mnemonics as a memory tool. I’m confident that by giving this course a trial run the benefits of these methods will be proven to you. The 20 lesson course will provide you with 7 essential words per lesson and suggestions for mnemonic “scenes” for you to remember them. Of course there are other words other than the 7 but with a little intuition and guesswork you can start to put together important and useful phrases immediately. Over the course of the 20 lessons you’ll see how you’ll pick up extra words and other characteristics of the language as you go. The important thing when you first start out is to get used to the structure that my course will teach you. You should get used to forming sentences in this way:

Form the base of everything you will say when you are starting out.

We are nearly ready to begin. First here is some information about the way the lessons are presented before we head into lesson 1. (For best results, try to do just one lesson a day. If you feel you can do more then I suggest making it a maximum of two per day). At the beginning of each lesson you will see the 7 new words presented as below:

The English word followed by the Portuguese translation

Indicates how many of each category of word there is for the lesson

This is the pronunciation of the new word. Where the text is bolded is the stress of the pronunciation

Real Brazilian Portuguese Notes Throughout this course you will see red boxes like this. These are there to give you extra details, information and tips to maximize your learning speed. Pay attention to these boxes as they can boost and multiply your learning.

Once you have been given the new words for the lesson the following pages will test your memory and then help you to put these new words to use in real sentences and conversation. As you progress through the course you will see how quickly your language will multiply.

1 Welcome to lesson 1. Below are the seven words you will need to remember for this lesson. Pay careful attention to the pronunciation for each word and spend some time developing the mnemonic. It’s better to spend a bit of time creating mnemonic scenes that work for you than to try and rush through this section. You will soon become an expert at creating mnemonics!

Mnemonic

I want in Portuguese is (Eu) Quero

(ay-oo) ke-ai r-o I want my friend to give me the key to my house and he throws it to me, imagine the key flying through the air.

Try to visualize this key in the air and you really wanting it. It is guaranteed to help you to remember this word. We are going to come back to this key in later mnemonics.

I need in Portuguese is (Eu) Preciso

(ay-oo) pre-see -soh Imagine you are working on a computer and you need to finish what you are working on. The compter tells you to press E on the keyboard. You need to press E so much.

The sound press E is something that you will come across a lot in this course - in this course this Portuguese sound always refers to need. So try to make a connection in your mind between need and press E. Really feel that you need to press E on the keyboard because, as before, we will come back to this in later mnemonics.

I can in Portuguese is (Eu) Posso

(ay-oo) po -soh Imagine someone you know wanting to do something and he/she says “I can because it’s po-soh-ble”.

1.2 Translate from Portuguese to English Now let’s put these seven words to use. You will probably not find it too difficult to work out the meaning of the following Portuguese sentences. If you are not sure of a word meaning, make a guess. Using your instinct and a little guess work you should find that you can start to understand some basic Portuguese already.

I Can Speak Portuguese! Firstly, before you begin, you need to know something about the verb can. In English we cannot say: I can to speak Portuguese

Some help A Praia: Minha casa: A Cidade: O Museu: Não:

Creating Negative Statements Creating negative statements is very simple in Portuguese, we simply add the Portuguese word for no which is não (pronounced nowng). Pronunciation tip: Portuguese contains a lot of nasal sounds. To pronounce não correctly say the word now and finish saying it through your nose. It’s easier to do than it sounds. I want: I don’t want:

Eu quero Eu não quero

I need: I don’t need:

Eu preciso Eu não preciso

I can: I can’t:

Eu posso Eu não posso

The rest of the sentence remains exactly the same: I need to go to the supermarket: I don’t need to go to the supermarket:

Eu preciso ir ao supemercado Eu não preciso ir ao supermercado

1.4 Translate from English to Brazilian OK, now the fun starts. Try to translate the English sentences below into Portuguese. Remember at this stage you are not expected to get these exactly right, but I think you can get very close. Some help A Praia: Minha casa: A Cidade: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Touching on Prepositions I have promised you over and over that my course does not dwell on grammar details that may confuse and bore you. However I think it makes sense to explain briefly the most common prepositions (small linking words). These have already cropped up in this first lesson and it may be more confusing if I don’t explain what is happening with these small linking words. In Brazilian Portuguese nouns are either feminine or masculine (I will go over this in a bit more detail in lesson 4). The word for the changes depending on whether the noun is feminine or masculine. Feminine The beach: A praia

Masculine The museum: O museu

The next thing you need to know is that the Portuguese word for to is also a therefore if we are saying to the beach the a (to) and the a (the) combine to form à. If we say to the museum we join the a (to) with the o (the) to create ao. I want to go to the beach: I want to go to the museum:

Eu quero ir à praia Eu quero ir ao museu

Please don’t concern yourself too much with these details at this stage - if you get these wrong, or even miss them out completely, people will still understand you!
