***** DOMESTIC AFFAIRS LITTLE PROGRESS FOR TURKISH WOMEN Yet another International Women’s Day and the second year in a new millennium in which Turkish women seem to have made little progress...
yet another = bir başka daha... make little progress = pek az mesafe katetmek... It seems the dichotomy that tears through modern Turkey rages on: One half of Turkish women enjoying a lifestyle and social status that any woman in the leading countries of the West would envy, and the other half living in such appalling servitude to men that recalls "typical" middle-eastern societies... dichotomy = ikilik... tears through = yırtıp ayıran, yırtıp boydanboya ikiye ayıran... rages on = bütün şiddetiyle devam ediyor... to enjoy = (burada) sahip olmak (ve dolayısıyla da nimetlerinden yararlanmak)... ( Bu sözcüğün çoğu zaman bu anlamıyla karşınıza çıkacağından daha önce de söz etmiştim)... to envy = gıpta etmek... appalling = çok kötü, utanç verici, şok edici... servitude = kölelik... to recall = çağrıştırmak, hatırlamak, hatırlatmak... According to a report published by the state’s Women’s Status and Issues Directorate, while a sizeable percent of Turkish women have suffered from domestic violence, 23 percent were raped by their husbands, 18 percent are illiterate and 39 percent are unemployed. directorate = genel müdürlük... sizeable = oldukça önemli bir bölümü... suffer from = uğramak, acı çekmek... domestic violence = aile içinde şiddet... to rape = zorla sahip olma... illiterate = okuma yazma bilmez... unemployed = işsiz... The study showed that 34 percent of the acts of domestic violence was physical while the remaining 66 percent verbal. The incidence of violence was higher in shantytowns and poorer communities, the report said. The results of the study also draws attention to the fact that the number of Turkish men who physically abuse their wives is close to one million, which may represent as much as 15 percent of the married males population. verbal = sözel... shantytowns = gecekondu mahalleleri... to draw attention to = dikkati çekmek... physically abuse = dayak atmak... Statistics show that in Turkey 4 out of every 10 men believe that they would be right to physically "punish" their wife or children if they were "disobeyed". Conversely, the number of men who share some responsibility in housework and child care is as low as 20 percent. conversely = bunun tersine... child care = çocuk bakımı... The report states that only one out every three women who have the potential to work have regular jobs. It shows that by and large, professional Turkish women prefer academic and teaching careers; banking, civil service and secretarial jobs coming second. by and large = büyük bölümüyle, büyük çoğunluk ile... coming second = ikinci sırada olmak üzere...
Strangely enough, representing 33 percent of the academic work force, women seem to stay away from politics, with only 2.4 percent of the elected deputies in the parliament being women. This is a rather sad fact considering that 70 or 80 years ago that percentage used to be in the double digits when in most European countries women did not even have the right to vote...
***** POLICE DETAIN SUSPECTS IN AKBANK ROBBERY Turkish police have captured two men allegedly involved in the robbing of an Istanbul branch on Wednesday. allegedly = iddia edildiğine göre... involved = karışmış, bulaşmış... to rob = soygun yapmak, soymak... robbery = soygun... robber = soyguncu... Turkish security forces announced that they detained the two men in a train in the western town of Kırklareli on Thursday morning. The train was travelling to Romania. According to police sources, the suspects were carrying two guns, TL 37.5 billion and $19,405 stolen from the bank. to detain = gözaltına almak... Bizim Türkçesi kıt TV kanallarımız ise, biliyorsunuz "gözlem altına" alıyorlar! yani "müşahede altında" tutuyorlar!... Romania = eskiden "Rumania" çok daha yaygındı... NOT: Biliyorsunuz yazıda para rumuzları rakamın başına konur ama ardından okunur... Two gunmen robbed the Akbank branch in the business district of Gayrettepe in Istanbul, the third such incident in the city in a week. Last Wednesday, two other banks in Istanbul were robbed, in one incident security personnel exchanging shots with two of the bandits, killing both. gunmen = silahlı kişiler... district = (burada) semt, bölge... to exchange shots = karşılıklı ateş etmek, ateş "teatisinde" bulunmak... bandit = haydut...
***** TURKEY'S FIRST DINOSAUR FOSSILS FOUND March 15— Turkish scientists have identified the first fossil belonging to the prehistoric times of the dinosaurs found in the country, uncovered during excavation work for a dam in Turkey’s north. The relics of the Cretaceous Era have been dated as being 70 million years old... relics = kalıntı... (Ancak, özellikle "mukaddes emanetler" için çok kullanılır)... identify = kimliğini veya niteliğini belirlemek... to uncover = açığa çıkarmak, meydana çıkarmak... dam /DÆM/ = baraj... Associate Professor Cemal Tunoğlu from the Geology Department of the Hacettepe University, said, “The fossils we found goes back 70 million years and belong to the type known as ‘the dinosaur of the seas’ or “the cousin of the dinosaur”. He added that the type of dinosaur would be 17.5 metres long but said pieces were destroyed in the construction work on the Beyler Dam. Those bones that had been salvaged were from the 1.5 metre-long head of the animal. He added that the fossils belonging to the same type had previously been unearthed in America, Holland, Belgium, Poland and Bulgaria. to salvage = kurtarmak, enkazdan çıkarmak... to unearth = dünya yüzüne çıkarmak, topraktan çıkarmak, keşfetmek...

TURKISH ECONOMY -- AN OVERVIEW overview = toplu bakış... Turkey's dynamic economy is a complex mix of modern industry and commerce along with traditional agriculture that still accounts for nearly 40% of employment. employment = 1. işe alma, adam tutma; 2. istihdam (metindeki anlam)... It has a strong and rapidly growing private sector, yet the state still plays a major role in basic industry, banking, transport, and communication. The most important industry - and largest exporter - is textiles and clothing, which is almost entirely in private hands. private sector = özel sector (X public sector)... the state = devlet (ayrıca, durum; to state = belirtmek, beyan etmek)... In recent years the economic situation has been marked by erratic economic growth and serious imbalances. GNP = gross national product, gayrisafi milli hasıla... strong expansion X a sharp decline... = kuvvetli genişleme X sert bir düşüş... output = üretim (burada)... Meanwhile the public sector fiscal deficit has shown a steady growth - due in large part to the huge burden of interest payments, which now account for more than 40% of central government spending while inflation has remained in the high double digit range. fiscal deficit = mali açık... steady growth = sürekli büyüme... due in large part to = büyük ölçüde ...den dolayı... huge burden = çok ağır yük (huge = very big, very large)... interest payments = faiz ödemeleri (interest = 1. ilgi, alaka... 2. faiz... 3. çıkar, menfaat)... central government spending = merkezi hükumet harcamaları... in the high double digit range = yüksek çift haneli düzeylerde... Perhaps because of these problems, foreign direct investment in Turkey remains low - less than $1 billion annually. investment = yatırım... remains low = düşük olmakta devam ediyor...

***** SPORTS NEWS CIM BOM APPEASES DISILLUSIONED FANS GALATASARAY 2, WERDER BREMEN 1 by Udo Steven Bassey, Ankara - Turkish Daily News (Shortened and slightly modified)
For two days in a row, Galatasaray (Cim Bom) played warm-up matches in Antalya, and for two days in a row Cim Bom lost, by the same score 2-1. First against Russia's Spartak Moscow and then to Turkish Division Two struggler Antalya Kepezspor. to appease = yatıştırmak, memnun etmek... appeasement (siyasette) savaş tehdidine karşı taviz vererek, istenileni yerine getirerek yatıştırmak... disillusioned = hayal kırıklığına uğramış... for two days in a row = ardarda iki gün... warm-up = ısınma, hazırlık... struggler = 1. mücadele eden; 2. zor durumda olan... To beat Werder Bremen and appease its disillusioned fans, Cim Bom's play was bound to be an elegant display of attacking skill, [...] but in doing so, they left gaping holes in their defense and Bremen was quick to exploit one of them. was bound to be = olması kaçınılmazdı... display = gösteri, sergileme... gap = ara, aralık, boşluk... to gape = ağzını kocaman açmak, ağzını açıp şaşkınlıkla aval aval bakmak... gaping holes = kocaman boşluklar... to be quick to do something = birşeyi yapmakta gecikmemek, çabucak yapmak... to exploit = 1. sömürmek; 2. kendi yararına kullanmak... was quick to exploit one of them = bunlardan birisini kendi yararlarına kullanmakta gecikmediler... Just after four minutes of play, Bremen went into the lead from an own-goal by captain-defender Bülent Korkmaz, when he kicked the ball into the back of his own net in a desperate bid to stop a Bremen player, who had broken loose and beaten Cim Bom's Colombian keeper Faryd Mondragon neat and clear. went into lead = öne geçti... in a desperate bid = çaresiz (ve herşeyi göze alan) bir girişimle... had broken loose = sıyrılmıştı, serbest kalmıştı... neat and clear = açık şekilde uzağında... However, Bülent turned from villain to hero in the 34th when he equalized 1-1 for Cim Bom from a corner kick. Just a minute later, playmaker Sergen Yalçın was on target to settle the score: Galatasaray 2, Werder Bremen 1. turned from villain to hero = kötü adamdan kahramana dönüştü... ("Villain" aslında hain, ihanet eden, demektir. Ama burada, gerek "hero" gerekse "villain", bir romanın yada filmin kahramanı ve kötü kişisi anlamında kullanılıyor... was on target = hedefi buldu... settle the score = skoru tayin etti... [...] One problem with Galatasaray is that it plays according to the strength of its opponents. That explains why Cim Bom sweeps aside European heavyweights with enthralling arrogance and at times loses to lightweights in Turkey. A clear example was in the Turkish Cup when Galatasaray was ousted in the third round by Second Division Erzurumspor. according to the strength of its opponents = rakiplerinin gücüne göre... sweeps aside = süpürüp bir kenara atıyor... European heavyweights = ağırsikletleri, önde gelen takımları... enthralling = büyüleyici... arrogance = kibir, gurur, mağrur olma... to oust = defetmek, dışarı atmak, kapı dışarı etmek, görevden düşürmek... in the third round = üçüncü turda... Second Division = İkinci Lig...

On their arrival in Seoul on Saturday they were greeted by a crowd of Korean veterans at the airport, Turkish diplomats said. to fire up = ateşlemek... South Korea and Turkey have enjoyed warm ties since Turkey sent 15,000 troops to help South Korea as part of a United Nations force during the Korean War. to enjoy = 1. hoşça vakit geçirmek; 2. sahip olmak, nimetlerinden yararlanmak (çoğu yerde olduğu gibi, buradaki anlamı da bu)... have enjoyed warm ties = sıcak ilişkiler içinde olageldiler... comrade = yoldaş, dava arkadaşı... Many elderly Koreans who fought alongside the Turks in the War have deep respect for the Turks. have deep respect for = derin saygı duyuyorlar... "I ran into two taxi drivers in Seoul who fought in the Korean War, and both refused to accept money from me. They were full of respect for the Turks apparently because of our role in the war," said Turkey manager Can Çobanoğlu. "They could not speak English, but their gratitude were visible in their eyes." to run into = to come across = happen to meet = to encounter = rastlamak... apparently = anlaşıldığına göre, göründüğü kadarıyla... The Turks expect some 15,000 South Koreans to show up to support Turkey at each match. In a move to foster the friendship, each veteran will toss tiny packages of Turkish delight, a traditional treat of gummy sugar-brushed cubes, to the Koreans. some = yaklaşık... to show up = oraya gelmek, ortaya çıkmak... In a move + mastar (infinitive) = amacıyla... to foster = geliştirmek... to toss = fırlatıp atmak... gummy = koyu pelte gibi... sugar-brushed = şeker serpilmiş ("fırça ile şeker sürülmüş" kavramından)... "Turkish Korean War veterans are a great bridge between Turkey and South Korea," said Tomur Bayer, Turkey's Ambassador to South Korea, in an interview. "They are the cornerstone of the Turkish-Korean friendship. "I am sure, they will be the focus of sympathy during the Brazil match," Bayer said.

frozen to death = soğuktan donarak ölmüş... elderly /EL-dıli/ = yaşlıca, yaşlı...

***** FOREIGN AFFAIRS TURKISH COMPANIES IN AFGHANISTAN The world community offers full aid for reconstruction of Afghanistan, as brotherly ties between Pakistan and Turkey are being strengthened and both countries are now cooperating in economic matters. Yine görüyorsunuz, gazetecilik dilinde marifet, olanaklı en küçük boşluğa olanaklı en çok haberi tıkıştırmak = "economy in words" ilkesi, çoğu zaman klasik gramerin sınırlarını zorluyor. Pakistan seeks partnership with Turkey for reconstruction of neighbouring Afghanistan. ***** DOMESTIC AFFAIRS ECONOMIC RECOVERY PROGRAM [Note that I have written some very long and involved sentences for you to bite into. However, you shall find some helpful hints after each paragraph.]
Successful implementation of Turkey’s economic recovery program is a matter of importance to and has the full support of the whole international community and the reasons behind such strong support is never a secret: the strategic position that the country occupies in one of the world's most troubled regions. İlk tümcenin asıl öznesi: "implementation", birbirine paralel iki fiil var: "is" ve "has". Bunlar "to" ve "of" şeklindeki iki edat ile tümcenin nesnesini etkiliyor: "international community". Öteki sözcükler bu ana öğeleri çeşitli yönlerden niteliyor. Tümce daha sonra "and" bağlacı ile yeni bir tümceye açılıyor...
While it is true that Turkey stands as the bastion of peace and stability in the region, it is also a sorry sight to see how slowly and painfully the country is recovering from the economic crises of the past few years. While it is true = Doğru olmakla birlikte... bastion /BÆS-tiın/ = kale burcu, tabya... a sorry sight = acıklı bir manzara... crisis /KRAY-sis/; çoğulu : crises /KRAY-si:z/: Okunuş farkına dikkat... [iki nokta üstüste, biliyorsunuz, sesin uzatıldığı anlamına geliyor.] Yes, the country has full international support for its economic recovery program, but it is also essential for Turkey to implement without a flinch all the elements of its economic recovery program. without a flinch = gözünü kırpmadan, yılmadan... First of all, there is a need for country's economic and commercial relations to be improved. But that all depends on the investment conditions for both domestic and foreign investors in Turkey. economic and commercial relations = iktisadi ve ticari ilişkiler... investment conditions = yatırım koşulları, ortamı... for both ...etc = gerek yerli gerek yabancı yatırımcılar için... The lack of transparency in investment and co-ordination problems in economy administration in Turkey causes concern for foreign investors. We must not be too optimistic without these problems first being solved. transparency = şeffaflık, saydamlık... co-ordination ...etc = ekonomi yönetiminde koordinasyon sorunları... causes concern = endişe yaratıyor... for = (burada) açısından... too optimistic = aşırı iyimser... Let no one be mistaken about the measures that need be taken to combat the problems that lie at the roots of the economic ills and woes of the country: Red tape needs to be eradicated at all costs; transparency must be boosted to the utmost degree; and the privatization process, which is now showing definite sighs of slowing down, must be speeded up. Let no one be mistaken = Kimsenin şüphesi olmasın, kimse bu konuda yanılmasın... to combat = muharebe etmek; burada "mücadele edip yenmek" anlamında... red tape = bürokratik işlemler... to eradicate = kökünü kazımak... ills =
yanlışlıklar, hastalıklar... woes = çekilen acılar, ızdıraplar... To boost = hızla yükseltmek... to the utmost degree = olanaklı en yüksek derecede...
***** FB BEATS GS: ONE to NIL... I am a Cim Bom fan and -- I would like to congratulate the whole FB community on this precious win over us... They were definitely the better prepared side, and set upon winning this derby. I would like to extend my congratulations also to Mr. Ali Aydın, the referee, for his unbiased and courageous management of this most difficult match. Shame on you, Mr. Lucescu: You've finally managed to transform the mighty lions into mere defensive weaklings... And, shame on you Captain Bülent. When are you going to stop getting on the wrong side of the referees and learn to concentrate on the game itself. I fear Liverpool will prove no mere Fenerbahçe, who could not score even more goals with Cim Bom down to seven men on the pitch...
***** DOMESTIC AFFAIRS DEBATE CONTINUES ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT President Sezer sided with the argument that the proposed banning of capital punishment in Turkey could be effected simply by changing the country's penal code, eliminating thus the need for a constitutional amendment which might prove just too difficult to pass through the parliament in its present political composition. sided with = tarafını tuttu, saflarında yerini aldı... proposed = teklif olunan... to ban = yasaklamak... capital punishment = idam cezası... be effected = gerçekleştirilmek... penal code = ceza yasası... constitutional amendment = anayasa değişikliği... Speaking at a weekly press briefing on Friday, Presidential advisor Talcan ldem said that the President, a former head of the Turkish Constitutional Court, believed proposed changes to the Turkish Penal Code would be enough ensure that the death penalty was no longer a sentencing option. Thus, amending the Turkish Penal Code, rather than changing the country’s constitution, would be sufficient to abolish capital punishment in Turkey, according to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. briefing /BRİ:-fiN/ = brifing, kısa bilgilendirme toplantısı... the Constitutional Court = Anayasa Mahkemesi... to ensure = olmasını sağlamak, garanti altına almak... death penalty = capital punishment... no longer = artık değil... sentencing = ceza verme, hüküm giydirme... to abolish = kaldırmak, lavetmek... ldem also stated that President Sezer condemns the recent decision by the European Parliament to recognize the so-called Armenian Genocide, adding that the President is of the opinion that history should be entrusted into the hands of historians.

Seven people were detained in connection with the case. Eight other similar paintings have turned up in Turkey during the past year. At least half of these have been proven to be forgeries, with none of the remaining ones having been authenticated so far. It has been claimed that many of the artworks looted from Kuwait by Iraqi forces during the 1990-91 Gulf War were later smuggled into Turkey for sale to art dealers. to seize /Sİ:Z/ = yakalamak, ele geçirmek... to disclose = açıklamak... allegedly /ı-Lİ:-cidli/ = iddia edildiğine göre, sözde... master = usta... to confiscate = el koymak... to detain = gözaltına almak [BU CAHİL TV'ler "GÖZLEM ALTINA ALMAK" dedikçe, sizler de benim kadar ÇILDIRIYOR MUSUNUZ?]... to turn up = ortaya çıkmak... forgery /FO-cıri/ = sahte şey, sahte imza, sahtecilik yapmak, sahte imza atmak... looted = yağmalanmış (to loot)... to smuggle /SMA-gl/= kaçakçılık yapmak... art dealers = sanat eseri alıp satanlar; sanat galerisi sahipleri diye düşünmek daha doğru bir yaklaşım olur...

Yılmaz, who is currently in Brussels to attend meetings of the European Convention, described a decision by the European Parliament to recognize the so-called Armenian Genocide and calls to Turkey not to ban the People’s Democracy Party (HADEP) as “nonsense" and as "being invalid for Turkey": currently = halen... calls = çağrılar... invalid = geçersiz... “We cannot accept these decisions. It is not possible for such decisions to create de facto results,” he said. “Turkey has always said that parliaments, which are political forums, do not have the mission of judging history,” Yılmaz continued in reference to the alleged Armenian Genocide. “This mission can only be carried out by independent and impartial scholars. However, Armenian lobbies have been trying continuously to exploit the parliaments." de facto = oldu bitti, fiili durum (Latince)... impartial = tarafsız... scholar = alim... to exploit = sömürmek... Adding that the decisions should not be allowed to affect Turkish relations with the European Union, Yılmaz, who is also the minister responsible for Turkey’s EU accession process, said that these decisions have revealed once again the importance of further improving relations with the EU and finalizing Turkey’s EU membership process. accession = girme, giriş... further improving = daha da iyileştirme... to finalize = sonuçlandırmak... ***** DOMESTIC AFFAIRS OBVIOUSLY THE MILITARY TOO ARE CONFUSED Do MGK Secretary-General's words on the EU reveal a certain new attitude on the part of the TSK, though he was only disclosing his "personal" views? What is not easy to understand is his suggestion that Turkey conduct a policy "that encompasses Russia and Iran without ignoring the United States." This has caused a certain amount of confusion in minds, and a clarification is called for. attitude = tutum, tavır... to disclose = açıklamak... to encompass = kapsamak, içine almak... to ignore = görmezden gelmek, tınmamak... clarification = açıklığa kavuşturma (make clear)... The views expressed by National Security Council (MGK) Secretary-General Gen. Tuncer Kılınç at a symposium held at the War Academies Command two days ago have created confusion in many a minds. Though Kılınç Pasha emphasized that these were his own personal views, those familiar with the traditions of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) know very well about the General Staff's sensitivity about military figures' "disclosing personal views." Especially when the person that has spoken up is the MGK secretary-general, it becomes all the more difficult to ignore these words by saying: "So what? These are only his personal views."
to emphasize = vurgulamak... general staff = genel kurmay... sensitivity = duyarlık, "hassasiyet"... figures = (burada) şahıslar, kişiler... figures' = sözcüğün -in eki almış hali... to speak up = açıkça ve yüksek sesle söylemek... Under the circumstances, although the prime minister said, "This is his personal stance; we do not have any such policy," in a way that indicates that he is taking this view lightly, Gen. Kılınç's words have caused an increasing number of people to ask questions such as, "Is the TSK altering its stance? Is it further toughening up its approach?" stance = tutum, tavır... to alter = değişmek, değiştirmek; değişim geçirmek... to toughen up = sertleştirmek... ["tough" sıfatından -en ekiyle yapılan fiil]... further toughening up = daha da sertleştiriyor... As far as we know, the General Staff is not against the European Union membership. What it wants is that while moving towards the EU, the measures required to ensure the state's and the country's unity and integrity, be taken. as far as we know = bildiğimiz kadarıyla... to ensure = sağlamak, sağlama almak, garantiye almak... unity = birlik, beraberlik... integrity = bütünlük... It wants Turkey not to run and join the EU blindly without securing itself adequately. It wants Turkey not to take too hasty steps. hasty = aceleci, acele... blindly = körlemesine... Some of these sensitivities are extremely justified. However, the view expressed by Gen. Kılınç carries this issue even beyond the EU and encompasses a brand new initiative, the feasibility of which is debatable. justified = haklı... (to justify = haklılığını göstermek, haklı kılmak, fiilinden)... issue = (burada) konu, mesele... brand new = yepyeni... initiative = insiyatif, girişim... feasibility = fizibilite, olabilirlik, geçerlik... debatable = tartışmalı, tartışmaya açık... ***** DOMESTIC NEWS "GENOCIDE" MISTAKE !! TDN Editorial by İlnur Çevik, 6 April 2002
Ecevit clearly got carried away and made remarks which he had to clarify at the DSP party gathering...
to get carried away = coşmak, coşku ile kendinden geçmek... to clarify = açıklığa kavuşturmak... gathering = toplantı... We were surprised on Thursday when we heard Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit telling his Democratic Left Party (DSP) deputies in a weekly routine gathering that Israel was committing an act of genocide against the Palestinians. to commit genocide /CEN-ısayd/ = soykırım yapmak... Such a statement coming from the prime minister of a country which is so sensitive to the word "genocide," we felt the prime minister would be more careful in what he said. After all, we are always up in arms when people accuse the Ottomans of having committed acts of genocide against the Armenians earlier this century. We even go as far as to threaten to cut our relations with countries whose parliaments approve anti-Turkish genocide resolutions. So when we heard his remarks we felt, "this man really means business." after all = "ne de olsa" şeklinde çeviriniz... to be up in arms = ayaklanmak (asıl anlamı silahlı ayaklanma)... to mean business = işi ciddi tutmak; konuya eğilmek... Then, we asked, "If Ecevit was full of such views, why did he approve the modernization of Turkish tanks by Israel last week?" So we were really baffled. baffled = şaşırıp kalmış (to baffle, fiilinden)... It seems the prime minister got carried away at the gathering, and his fiery speech went a bit too far. This became apparent when the Turkish Foreign Ministry drew Ecevit's attention to the possible ramifications of his remarks. So the prime minister issued a written statement late Thursday which aimed at down-playing his charge of Israeli genocide. fiery speech /FA-yıri/ = ateşli konuşma... went a bit too far = biraz fazla ileri gitti... apparent /ı-PÆ-rınt/ = (burada) gözle görülür, belirgin... In the statement, Ecevit said his remarks accusing military ally Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinians reflected the region's growing anxiety over violence in the Middle East. military ally /Æ-lai/ = askeri müttefik... anxiety /eng-ZA-iti/ = endişe, tedirginlik... "In this speech, I touched upon the grave results the events in the Middle East could lead to. My words reflected the anxiety felt in our country and our region." to touch upon = değinmek... grave = ağır ciddi... (ayrıca, mezar)... This is all fine, but not so convincing. After such remarks, he should not criticize the actions of some Islamists in Turkey who make similar remarks like him... Ecevit has to be much more careful in what he says and does. This is all... etc. = Bütün bunlar iyi de, pek inandırıcı değil... We heard very clearly at his address to the DSP deputies that he called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel "Sharon," "Sheraton," several times, which raised many eyebrows. If the Foreign Ministry had not warned Ecevit of his "mistake," would the prime minister have made such a written statement late Thursday night? Ecevit's address, in general, was well balanced and to the point. He was right in charging that some Arab countries do not want a Palestinian state, that Sharon's tactics were playing into the hands of radical terrorist elements, and above all that Sharon was trying to get rid of Arafat. What is sad, is that the mention of "genocide" overshadowed all these... to the point = konuya ilişkin, meselenin üstüne giden... to charge = suçlamak... play into the hands of = karşı tarafın işine yarayacak şekilde davranmak... to overshadow = gölgesi düşmek...
***** SPORTS NEWS GALATASARAY BREAKS CLEAR from, http://www.ntvmsnbc.com
It may have been Galatasaray’s first domestic win on the road since September but Cim Bom couldn’t have timed it better, its 2-0 defeat of Trabzonspor on Wednesday night taking it to the outright lead of the Turkish Super League. to break clear = arayı açmak... couldn't have timed it better = daha iyi zamanlayamazlardı; en iyi zamanlama buydu... However, a hard running Galatasaray outfit brought these hopes to earth with a bump, through goals to Arif in the 14th minute and Hasan Şaş in the 89th. However, the home side could not translate pressure into an equalizer and then had to sit back as Şaş weaved a bit of magic just before full time, beating three defenders and slotting home a shot past Trabzon keeper Metin. home side = evsahibi takım... (tersi: visiting side)... translate pressure into an equalizer = baskıyı bir beraberlik golüne çevirmek... weave a bit of magic = büyü gibi dokudu... just before full time = maç bitmeden az önce... to slot home = ağlara taktı, kaleye soktu...
Galatasaray’s win lifts it three points clear of second placed Fenerbahçe and five in front of losing Turkish Cup finalist Beşiktaş. If Cim Bom can continue to display the form of Wednesday night, they would have to be considered favourites to take the title. It is just a question of if. three points clear of second placed FB = ikinci sıradaki FB'nin üç puan önünde... to take the title = şampiyon olmak... It is just a question of if... WORLD BANK CLEARLY WORRIED ABOUT THE OVER-VALUED LIRA The World Bank is discussing a new loan pact for Turkey when the current deal ends in 2003 [Modified from the REUTERS] The World Bank is discussing a new loan pact for Turkey when the current deal ends in 2003, but is concerned that local currency strength may threaten growth targets, the bank’s representative in Turkey said on Monday. clearly = besbelli, açıkça... is concerned = endişe, tedirginlik duyuyor... ("concern" sözcüğü, bazen ayrı ayrı bazen de birlikte ifade ettiği, "ilgi" ve "endişe" şeklinde iki anlam atomunu içeren bir moleküldür)... over-valued = aşırı değerlenmiş, veya aşırı değer atfedilen... loan pact = borç anlaşması... current deal = mevcut anlaşma, şimdiki anlaşma... local currency = burada "yerel para" kavramıyla "ülke para birimi" kastediliyor... growth targets = büyüme hedefleri... Ajay Chhibber picked out recent strength in the Turkish lira as a possible threat to Turkey’s plans to return to growth after a 2001 crisis caused gross national product decrease by 9.4 percent. gross national product = gayri safi milli hasıla... Turkey’s current two-year pact with the bank, known as a Country Assistance Strategy or CAS, is worth $6.2 billion and aimed mainly at financial, public, energy and agricultural reforms. It backs a $16 billion IMF lending deal to help Turkey out of recession. to back = desteklemek, destek olmak... lending deal = borç verme anlaşması... recession /ri-SE-şın/ = durgunluk (sözcük anlamı = gerileme, geri çekilme)... “Sometime by the end of this year we will also provide a new CAS for Turkey for 2003 to 2005. This is still under discussion,” Ajay Chhibber told Reuters in an interview. He said that the IMF targets to reduce Turkish inflation to 35 percent by end-2002 from 65 percent in March looked set to be met and the country should now focus on a return to growth. the IMF targets ... look set to be met = IMF hedefleri gerçekleşecek (gerçekleşmeğe hazır) görünüyor... Chhibber pointed out that the stronger lira since October last year against the dollar could hurt export and tourism revenues, which were expected to play a key role in growth: The urgent need for growth had to be brought under focus now and this would require concentrating also on the exchange rate because this was beginning to affect the competitiveness of Turkish exports in an adverse way. revenues = gelirler (özellikle de devlet veya resmi kuruluşların gelirleri)... exchange rate = döviz kuru... to affect in an adverse way = olumsuz etkilemek... Turkish Central Bank and IMF officials have all recently expressed concern over the lira’s rise and Chhibber’s remarks now only add to market concerns: “The real exchange rate has reached now precrisis levels and at some point this is going to hurt the exports and tourism,” he said.

If President Ahmet Necdet Sezer hadn’t vetoed the latest amnesty law, would convicts such as Mehmet Ali Ağca and Haluk Kırcı have received a ‘get out of jail free’ card? Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Türk addressed this question when I spoke to him yesterday. ‘The press looked at the early release law and interpreted it to mean that these men would be released,’ he said. ‘However, it was by no means certain that they would benefit from this law and get out. One would have to check each of their files individually.’ İlk tümce, tipik bir Tip III if'li tümce: "If Sezer hadn't vetoed, would they have received...?" (to be convicted of a crime = bir suçtan hüküm giymek)... A "get out of jail free" card = monopoli oyunundaki kart adlarını anımsayınız... addressed this question = bu sorunla ilgili konuştu, bu konu üzerinde durdu... "herbirinin dosyaları" mı? Bu tür belirsizliklerde bağlama başvururuz. Burada ilki olduğu anlaşılıyor. individually = herbir... ("individual" sözcüğünün bu anlamına dikkat ediniz: "We must check every individual file" = Herbir dosyayı... "Individual countries may decide for or against this issue = Ülkeler ayrı ayrı (herbir ülke diğerlerinden ayrı olarak) lehte veya aleyhte karar verebilir.) Justice Minister Türk cannot predict for certain the fates of Ağca and Kırcı, instead saying that their files need to be examined. So what will happen next? Minister Türk points out that a legal vacuum has opened up following President Sezer’s veto, and so he emphasizes that a new law should be enacted as soon as possible. predict for certain = kesin söyleyebilmek, önceden kestirebilmek... instead = bunun yerine... (İlk tümcenin gramer açısından düşük olduğuna dikkat ediniz: Gazetecilikte "yutuluyor", ama sınavda cezalanırdınız. Tümcenin iki bölümü arasında gramatik denklik/paralellik sağlamalısınız. Örneğin: cannot predict... , instead he says that...) "A new law" is "enacted" = "to enact a law" = yasa yapmak/çıkarmak... It is no surprise that the subject of amnesty resulted in confusion. Let’s remember, the push for amnesty originally came from Democratic Left Party [DSP] deputy leader Rahşan Ecevit, also the wife of the prime minister. Her aim was to bring back into society’s fold those who ended up in prison due to petty crimes and who are considered ‘victims of fate’ and their social conditions. The aim was to provide people who turned to crime due to economic hardship with jobs. Rahşan Ecevit made an effort to ensure that the ‘victims of fate’ who were released from prison under last year’s amnesty law would be brought back into normal society. She helped them to find jobs. Mrs. Ecevit’s aim was limited to this. the push for amnesty = af yönündeki baskı ("ittirme" kavramından)... deputy leader = başkan yardımcısı... "also wife of the prime minister" = aynı zamanda başbakanın refikaları... to bring back into society's fold = "topluma kazandırmak" (Genel Müdürlük çevirmenlerini burada kullandıkları deyimden dolayı gerçekten kutlarım. Deyimin diğer kullanılış biçimleri: to be brought back into society's fold... returned into society's fold... within the Society's fold...) petty crimes = küçük suçlar... victims of fate = KADER KURBANLARI... (kavram bizden...) However, the result was just the opposite. While this old conditional release law was enacted by commissions one by one, it turned out to be an ‘amnesty of supporters’ from the coalition partners. It was very likely that the Constitutional Court would annul the law, which is just what happened. just the opposite = tam tersi... conditional release = şartlı salıverme... amnesty of supporters = sanıyorum "amnesty for supporters" kastediliyor... to annul = iptal etmek (yasa, vb için)...
This new arrangement for conditional release for ‘victims of fate’ turned out almost to be a ‘general amnesty’ covering such convicts as Ağca and Kırcı. Neither the public nor the Ecevits’ conscience could stomach this. It will be hard for the government to put together a palatable conditional release law after this point. general amnesty = genel af... convict = hükümlü... the Ecevits' = Karı koca Ecevitler... to stomach = (bu bağlamda) İÇİNE SİNDİREBİLMEK... (to find a loophole in the law = yasada bir boşluk bulmak. "Duvarda açılan küçük bir delik" anlamında olan loophole bu deyimlerde mecazi kullanımda)... April 29— Some 123 inmates held in prisons in the western provinces of Çanakkale and Bolu in Turkey’s northwest have been released due to a Constitutional Court decision and inaction by the government. inmate = mahkum (hapishanede)... inaction = hareketsizlik; bu konuda birşey yapmama durumu... The government had been given six months by the Constitutional Court in which it was supposed to prepare a law to correct a legislative mistake in the legislation for a previous prisoners amnesty. Though the government approved the new legislation, including further sentence reductions, the bill was vetoed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer over the weekend and the six month period of grace lapsed. to be supposed + mastar = bir şeyi yapması gerekmek; bunu yapması bekleniliyor olmak; yapacağı varsayılmak... a legislative mistake = bir yasama hatası... sentence reductions = süre indirimleri (sentence = mahkeme kararı, hüküm)... bill = yasa... a draft bill = yasa tasarısı... period of grace = grace period = bir şeyin yapılması için tanınan süre... to lapse = geçmek (özellikle zaman, süre için -- bu sözcüğün daha pekçok anlamları var: lütfen sözlüğe danışınız. Örneğin tıptaki "rölaps" kavramının kökü de bu sözcük.) Prosecutors said that the release of the prisoners was conditional and that they were deemed to have been set free on bail. If the laws were to be changed in the future the prisoners could easily be found and put behind bars again, officials said. prosecutor = savcı... to deem = saymak, addetmek, öyle düşünmek... on bail = kefaletle tahliye edilmiş... Son tümcenin çevirisi: Yetkililer, eğer yasalar ilerde değiştirilecek olursa, mahkumların kolaylıkla bulunup yeniden demir parmaklıklar arkasına konulabileceğini söylediler!! İzbul's Comment: Well, so comforting it is to know that we, the ordinary citizens, can now take refuge in the fully-emptied prison houses as all inmates are released and "brought back into society's fold"!!

ANKARA, Turkey, June 11, 2002, The Associated Press -- Prosecutors began investigating on Monday whether a Turkish economist broke the law by referring to the imprisoned Kurdish rebel leader as "Mr." Abdullah Öcalan, a news report said. prosecutor = savcı... to break the law = yasayı çiğnemek... imprisoned = hapsedilmiş, hapisteki... rebel = asi, başkaldıran; /RE-bıl/ : ad hali, ilk hece vurgulu]... to rebel = isyan etmek (toplu halde) /ri-BEL/ : fiil, ikinci hece vurgulu]... rebellion /ri-BEL-yın/ = isyan, başkaldırı... The Turkish press routinely refers to Öcalan as the "terrorist chieftain" or "baby killer" and it is illegal to show support for Öcalan or his rebel group. routinely = rutin olarak... chieftain /Çİ:F-tın/ = (kabile veya benzeri küçük gruplar için) baş, şef, reis... Buradaki deyişler: terörist başı, bebek katili... Atilla Yeşilada, an economist and commentator on Turkey's financial CNBC-e channel, repeatedly used the Turkish word "sayın" -- which means "mister" and is used to show respect -- before Ocalan's name at a conference on the economy this weekend, the Anatolia news agency reported.
commentator = yorumcu... Muhabir yanılıyor: "sayın" sözcüğü "mister" dan çok öte bir "saygılı" hitap tarzı. Örneğin, mecliste milletvekilleri birbirine "sayın" şeklinde hitap ederken, bunun İngiliz Parlamentosundaki karşılığı = the honourable member... Several participants, including State Minister Tunca Toskay, a nationalist politician, walked out in protest. participant /par-Tİ-sipınt/ = katılımcı... Gerçi bizim askeriye bu konularda biraz fazla duyarlıdır ("over-sensitive") ama, hangi ülkede hangi kurumu "insult" etmek "legal" dir acaba??] Turkey, which aspires to join the European Union, is under pressure to ease laws that restrict freedom of expression. to aspire = özlemle amaçlamak, umutla hedeflemek... to ease = rahatlatmak, gevşetmek... ("easy" sözcüğünün kökü)... Yeşilada was not immediately available for comment, but the economist defended himself during the conference saying that he refers to everyone as "sayın," Anatolia reported. Yeşilada ... for comment = Anlamı: ilk anda yorumlarını almak mümkün olmadı, veya kendisine ulaşamadık... Öcalan was sentenced to death in 1999 and is awaiting a European Court of Human Rights verdict on his appeal. verdict = hüküm, mahkeme kararı... appeal = temyiz başvurusu...
***** PEOPLE AND EVENTS TURKEY TRYING TO CRACK DOWN ON "EVIL" FOREIGN PROSTITUTES The authorities characterize foreign prostitutes as disease spreaders and even tied some to spying. Islamic clerics curse them as "evil foreigners." The Associated Press

Bu başlığın komik yanı ise, farkına varılmadan "yerli mallar" dan yana tavır konuluyor olması... Olga, a slim 24-year-old Russian blonde, never met her Turkish husband. A Russian prostitution ring arranged the marriage through bribery to provide her instant Turkish citizenship -- a legal shield against deportation if she is ever caught. slim = ince (aranılır bir özellik; zayıf, sağlıksız anlamında ise "skinny" deriz)... blonde = sarışın (daha çok sıfat olarak kullanılan "blond" ve yine ad olan "blondie" gibi varyasyonları var)... ring = çete, şebeke... bribery = rüşvet... instant citizenship = "instant coffee" gibi birşey: anında yurttaşlık... shield = kalkan, koruma... deportation = sınırdışı etme... ever = burada "olur da yakalanırsa" anlamında ("tüm zamanlarda" kavramından)... The government, which is trying to crack down on the issue, characterizes prostitutes as disease spreaders and even tied some to spying. Islamic clerics curse them as "evil foreigners." Prostitution is legal here only at government-controlled brothels housing Turkish women, and foreigners are subject to deportation if caught. brothel = genelev... "government-controlled" deyimi de hiç yerinde değil: "hükumet/devlet işletiyor" anlamında anlaşılabilir... "licensed by municipalities" filan gibi bir anlatım yerinde olurdu... to be subject to = tabi, maruz, mahkum... "They can't deport me. I am a Turkish citizen," Olga said at a night club full of young women from the former Soviet states. Olga said she married and divorced her Turkish husband without seeing him. She did not know how much he was paid. "I never wondered about who he was," she said. I've never wondered ...etc. = Kim olduğunu hiç merak etmedim... Some prostitutes have married poor Turks who were paid up to dlrs 3,000, authorities say. Newspapers have reported cases of mentally disordered Turks being used as marriage partners without their knowledge. As part of its crackdown, the government wants to make it harder to become a citizen. Legislation before parliament would require married couples to live together for three years and to undergo a security investigation before citizenship could be granted. legislation before parliament = meclise sevkedilmiş olan yasa... to undergo security investigation = güvenlik soruşturması geçirmek... The government's campaign began after an intelligence report, titled "Natasha Activities," warned that some foreign prostitutes might be engaged in espionage.
an intelligence report, titled "Natasha Activities" = "Nataşa Etkinlikleri" başlıklı bir istihbarat raporu!!... intelligence = haberalma, istihbarat... espionage = casusluk, çaşıtlık... The report said some foreign prostitutes are hired by government officials and could be spying on military plans and weapons contracts, the newspaper Sabah said. The women are interrogated, sometimes for days, by their country's intelligence service when they return home, it said. are hired = tutuluyorlar, görevlendiriliyorlar ("para ile kiralanıyorlar" kavramından... could be spying on military plans and weapons contracts = askeri planlar ve silah satınalma mukaveleleri ile ilgili casusluk yapıyor olabilirler!!... to interrogate = sorgulamak... However, there have not been any reported cases of espionage involving foreign prostitutes. involving foreign prostitutes = yabancı fahişelerin karıştığı, bulaştığı, "müdahil" olduğu... Recently, police have intensified raids on seedy hotels around the country, deporting hundreds of women. DİKKAT DİKKAT: "the eastern city of Kars", "the capital city of Ankara" gibi deyişlere dikkat ediniz. Bunlarda "genitive" -in takısını kullanmayacaksınız: Çeviriniz "Kars'ın doğu kenti" yada "Ankara'nın başkenti" gibi şeyler olmayacak. Doğru Türkçe karşılıklar "doğudaki Kars kenti... başkent Ankara... [Bu bölümde, 2001 tarihli bir U.S. "human rights" raporundan alınmış, Dergi'mde asla yer veremeyeceğim türden adi iddialar var. "My family thinks I'm working here as a tourist guide," she said in fluent Turkish. "Occasionally, I fly home to make them happy with gifts." in fluent Turkish = akıcı bir Türkçe ile... Olga said she came voluntarily after learning how much she could make as a prostitute. The dlrs 150 she earns nightly is more than Turkey's monthly minimum wage of 165 million Turkish lira, or about dlrs 120. voluntarily = gönüllü olarak... Bu ülkede aylık asgari ücret 120 dolar. Olga gecede 150 dolar kazanıyor. Acaba IMF'den dilendiğimiz birkaç milyar doların kaç katını bu yollardan yurtdışına çıkarıyoruz? She sometimes goes to other Turkish cities "for friends," who she said include Turkish businessmen, some Israelis and American servicemen at Incirlik air base in southern Turkey. Eh, iyi. Hiç olmazsa, İsrailliler ile İncirlik'teki Amerikan askerlerini de yoluyorlarmış... "Of course, they have to pay my travel expenses, too," she said, waving away a cloud of cigarette smoke. waving away etc. = sigarasının duman bulutunu elleriyle dağıtarak...

***** FOREIGN PRESS ECEVİT DEFIES PRESSURE TO GO from the BBC -- Europe, Tuesday, 9 July, 2002
Turkey's ailing Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit has appointed new ministers after a string of resignations from cabinet and party colleagues demanding early elections. ailing = hasta, düşkün, sağlığı giderek bozulmakta olan... a string of = bir dizi... to resign /ri-ZAYN/ = istifa etmek... to re-sign /Rİ:-sayn/ = yeniden imzalamak... (Bu iki fiil birbiri ile ilişkisiz -- hece vurgusunun önemini örneklemek için birlikte gösteriyorum)... But he is refusing calls to step down. Opposition leader Tansu Çiller said he had told her on Tuesday that he "had not yet come to the point of resignation". call = çağrı... to step down = görevi bırakmak ("yüksek bir yerden aşağı inmek" kavramından)... Four senior government officials, including one of the deputy prime ministers -- Mr Ecevit's key ally Hüsamettin Özkan -- have abandoned both the prime minister and his Democratic Left Party (DSP). ally /Æ-lai/ = müttefik... alliance /ı-LAİ-ıns/ = ittifak... Another deputy prime minister, Mesut Yılmaz, has called for a new Turkish government, while the leader of the far-right Nationalist Action Party (MHP) -- a member of Mr Ecevit's three-party coalition -called on Sunday for early elections. A total of 26 MPs have departed since Monday, causing the DSP to lose its status as the largest party both in parliament and the fragile coalition. fragile GB, /FRÆ-cayl/; US, /FRÆ-cil/ = kırılgan...
The BBC's Jonny Dymond in İstanbul says that it seems unavoidable that elections will be brought forward. But it remains wholly unclear what kind of political set-up a national poll would produce. unavoidable = kaçınılmaz, sakınılamaz... be brought forward = erken bir tarihe çekilmek... it remains unclear = belirsiz olmakta devam ediyor... set-up = (burada) durum, yapı, kurulum; (to set up = kurmak, tesis etmek fiilinden)... poll = seçim, seçim sandığı... Current opinion polls suggest that, were elections held now, the principal winner would be the proIslamic Justice and Development Party - which would almost certainly upset the army-led secularist elite of the mainly Muslim country. opinion poll = kamuoyu araştırması... were elections held now = (devrik yapıya dikkat) = if elections were held now... to upset = (burada) rahatsız etmek (ayrıca, üzmek, altüst etmek, düzenini bozmak gibi kavramları vardır)... secular = laik... secularist = laiklik taraftarı... The United States is said to be monitoring the situation "with interest". As the only Muslim-majority member of Nato, Turkey's political and economic stability are important to a variety of US interests abroad - including the Middle East, Afghanistan and Iraq. to monitor = izlemek, gözlemek (to watch veya observe fiillerinden nüans farkına dikkat ediniz)... political and economic stability ARE = "Is" yerine "Are" kullanımı, muhabirin burada siyasi ve ekonomik stabiliteyi iki farklı ve ayrık nitelikli kavram şeklinde kavramlaştırdığını gösteriyor... Correspondents say the departed deputy Mr Özkan, once seen as a likely successor to Mr Ecevit, played a vital role in keeping the shaky coalition together. He acted as a mediator, resolving disputes over economic reforms with other parties. correspondents = muhabirler (to correspond; kendileriyle haberleştiğimiz, "muhaberede" bulunduğumuz kimseler kavramından)... departed = V3 biçimi (past participle) sıfat olarak kullanılıyor = ayrılmış olan... to succeed = 1. başarmak; 2. yerine geçmek, "halef" olmak... successor = halef, yerine geçen... successive storms = ardarda gelen fırtınalar... (Halef - selef kavramlarını ayırmakta güçlük çekiyorsanız, "halife" kavramını düşününüz)... shaky = to shake, fiilinden... to resolve disputes = anlaşmazlıkları çözmek... Markets are worried that a new government will not stick to the programme hammered out with the International Monetary Fund in return for a massive $16bn loan agreed earlier this year. markets = piyasalar... stick to = sadık kalmak, sürdürmek (to stick = yapışmak, yapıştırmak fiilinden)... hammered out = şekillendirilmiş (demirin dövülerek şekillendirilmesi kavramından)... in return for = karşılığında... Ministers have also been in a rush to pass the reforms needed to start membership negotiations with the European Union. The end of the year is the effective deadline. in a rush = acele ediyor olmak... membership negotiations = üyelik müzakereleri... deadline = son tarih... But with early elections looking like a necessity, there will be no legislative progress for months, which is likely to unsettle the business community still further, and jeopardize the country's bid to start talks with Brussels. unsettle = dengesini/asabını bozmak... still further = daha da ileri boyutlarda... to jeopardize = to endanger, to imperil = tehlikeye atmak, riske sokmak... bid = (burada) istek, talep, girişim...
* * * * * NATIONAL PRESS
A PAINFUL CHANGE OF POLITICAL LEADERSHIP ADVANCED READING: Turkish Daily News'dan Sayın Burak BEKDİL'in her bakımdan dörtdörtlük bu yazısını buraya aynen alıyorum. In Ankara, nowadays, two hours is a long time in politics. In what looks like a high drama of power struggle, things change in the Turkish capital at a shocking speed. The bickering could be just the beginning of a historic reshuffle in Turkish politics. bickering = çekişme, alıp verememe... reshuffle = "safların yeniden oluşması" anlamında (yerlerini/sırasını yeniden düzenlemek, iskanbil kağıtlarını karmak/karıştırmak, gibi kavramlardan)... Not only political news is bizarre in this country. Take this one, for example, "two cars crash; two dead, nine injured."? No, not a mistake, just 11 people in two speeding cars... Welcome to Turkey! Or, how about this one? "Train crashes with motorbike; four dead." !!!! Think twice before rushing to the easiest explanation that the death toll must have been mis-stated. Be realistic. What's wrong if four people rode on a motorbike and attempted to cross the track but unfortunately did not notice the approaching cargo train? death toll = ölü sayısı... Oh, don't forget to go and see this hospital in İstanbul whose patient rooms are overlooking a cemetery. It must be a unique idea. By the way, guess where was the illegal immigrant who was found folded in his girlfriend's suitcase while she was embarking on an Italian port from? Need we tell? to overlook a cemetery = mezarlığa bakmak, mezarlık görmek (manzara olarak)... folded = katlanmış, kıvrılmış... "where ...from" yapısına dikkat... In a country where "prime minister goes to his office" is "flash news" few things should surprise anyone. Poor agency reporters, it must take a certain skill to explain all this zigzagging of one man in a 60-character headline: "Democratic Left Party Deputy who had defected to the new movement but later joined his party resigns again!" Or did it really surprise anyone when former premier and opposition leader Tansu Çiller said she must be Turkey's prime minister when the U.S. launches a strike against Iraq? to defect = terketmek, karşı tarafa geçmek... Ad durumu aşağıda geçiyor: defection... Despite all the parody, however, there is some humourless activity in Ankara. Winston Churchill once said two weeks is a long time in politics. In Ankara, nowadays, two hours is a long time in politics. In what looks like a high drama of power struggle, things change in the Turkish capital at a shocking speed. The bickering could be just the beginning of a historic reshuffle in Turkish politics. Ten days ago Turkey had a sick prime minister who was too stubborn to quit. After a wave of defections from his party, Turkey has a sick prime minister, a disintegrating government, but prospects for radical change in leadership. A "troika" bent on liberal economic reforms and bringing Turkey, a distant EU candidate, closer to Brussels, is claiming leadership from the old guard. too stubborn to quit = terketmeyecek kadar inatçı... troika = üçlü, üçlü yönetim... bent on = kesin kararlı; bütün dikkat ve enerjisini o yöne vermiş... Call it the Dream Team of White Turks, or the Three Musketeers, or Turkey's Third Way, Hüsamettin Özkan, widely known as Mr. Glue for his extraordinary ability to keep together an otherwise hostile bunch of politicians, quite quickly glued the Cabinet's two most popular figures into his grouping: İsmail "Mr. Charisma" Cem and Kemal "The Messiah" Derviş. the Three Musketeers = Üç Silahşörler... otherwise = başka bakımlardan... Messiah = Mesih, Kurtarıcı...
Mr. Cem, the leader of the most exciting and market-friendly grouping expects a comfortable lead over their rivals if Turkey went to the ballot boxes at the earliest convenience. That may be difficult though. a comfortable lead over their rivals = rakiplerine göre rahat/büyük bir marjla... To support his optimism, however, Mr. Cem cites a public opinion poll on the web site of a mainstream newspaper. But he should be able to understand that the readers of a web paper may differ in political opinion from 35 million Turkish voters. In statistics, the kind of conclusion Mr. Cem has reached is called "insignificant due to bad sampling." This is like a poll putting Mrs. Çiller in power with a 60 percent voter support. Only that the poll had been carried out at, errr, her party's headquarters... a mainstream newspaper = "tarafsız", radikal olmaktan uzak, sessiz çoğunluğu temsil eden, yaygın satılan gazete... bad sampling = yanlış/kötü örnekleme dayalı... "errr" = şeyyy... True, mainstream media support and Mr. Derviş alone may bring in as much as 10 percent of votes nationwide, but it is too early to guess victory or defeat. Before talking polls, to win an election vote in parliament may be more difficult than expected even if coalition is stripped of its ruling majority -- any time soon. The troika may agree to support a minority government if the government's nationalist wing, the only political party, along with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Justice and Development, which genuinely can afford polls, agreed for the plan. ruling majority = iktidar çoğunluğu... Turkey's next polls, unlike previous ones, will not see a clash of ideologies, but a clash of conservatists and liberals from both directions of the political spectrum. The ideal post-election scenario for the liberals is to make alliance between the troika, the Motherland and other social democrat splinters if they pass the national threshold, leaving the opposition seats to Islamist and nationalist elements. Although it is too early to guess, this is a no-nonsense plan. "conservatists" = Sayın Bekdil'in dörtdörtlük İngilizce'sine saygı gösteriyor ve bir "neologism" kabul ederek aynen bırakıyorum. Ancak, doğru sözcüğün "conservatives" sayılmak gerektiğini belirtmek isterim... Once again, "all options are open" in Turkish politics. But one thing is clear: all the painful episode is forcing the country into change in political leadership.
* * * * * NOT: "Islam/Islamist" sözcüklerini, İngilizce yazılış sayarak, olduğu gibi bıraktım. Ancak "İstanbul" dahil, bütün Türkçe sözcüklerde Türk klavyesini kullanmaya özen gösterdiğimi okuyucularımız hatırlayacaklardır... Bu uygulamama karşı çıkanlar, acaba "Mr. Djem" yazmayı mı, yoksa "Mr. Kem" okutmayı mı planlıyorlar?
FOREIGN PRESS SWIMSUITS FOR DEVOUT MUSLIMS HIT TURKISH BEACHES NOT: Bu haftaki ilginç okuma parçası seçimimde, aşağıdaki yazıda sözü edilen Hafize Hn.'ın soyadının hiçbir etkisi yoktur... from The Associated Press, August 17, 2002 İSTANBUL, Turkey (AP) -- Hafize Erdoğan, a devout Muslim, proudly sports her new blue swimsuit -a full-body outfit that covers her arms down to her wrists, her legs to her ankles and even much of her head.
swimsuit = mayo... (DİKKAT: "suit": okunuşu /SU:T/, yani uzun /u:/ ile)... devout /di-VAUT/ = dindar, kendijni dine vermiş (Başka alanlarda da "kendini adamış taraftar" anlamında kullanılabilir)... to sport = gösterişli şekilde giymek; giymiş, üzerinde olmak... outfit = aksesuarları ile birlikte giyim, giysi (Özellikle de belli bir amaç veya olay için giyilen)... to cover = kaplamak, örtmek... wrist /RİST/ = kol bileği... ankle /ÆNK-ıl/ = ayak bileği... The 30-year-old mother of two said she bought the suit so she could swim with her family while also observing religious rules about modesty. mother of two = iki çocuk annesi... to observe = (burada) kurallara "riayet" etmek... modesty = 1. alçakgönüllülük, tevazu; 2. (burada) giysi, davranış veya konuşmada kurallara uyma (dolayısıyla, "tesettür" kastediliyor)... "I used to have to stand by and watch my family in the water," Erdoğan said at Kilyos Beach on the outskirts of İstanbul. "I would watch my kids like a cat looks at liver ... But now I can swim, too." stand by = kenarda durmak... (Diğer bir anlamı ise, "yardıma hazır şekilde yanında durmak")... outskirts = dış mahalleler, varoşlar (ancak İngilizce'de bizdeki "varoş" nüanslarını aramayın)... watch like a cat looks at liver = Bildiğim kadarıyla, İngilizce'de böyle bir deyim yok: Türkçe'den çevirip, dile armağan etmişler... Erdoğan is evidence of a growing trend in Turkey, where devoutly religious consumers are looking to combine their beliefs with Western pastimes. pastime = hobi, hoşça zaman geçirten uğraş... "Islamic circles have traditionally understood beaches as something sinful," said Murat Cemrek, who teaches sociology at Ankara's Bilkent University. "But Islamic circles have become modernized. They've got money. They want to go to the beach and keep their Islamic values." sinful = günah (olan şey)... sinner = günahkar (insan)... Son tümceye bir "too" eklense, daha şık bir tümce olurdu... Bathing suits are only part of Turkey's flourishing Islamic market. There are also Islamic camping sites, spas and beach resorts that segregate men and women. Caprice Hotel on the Aegean Sea coast, for example, advertises "a modern vacation complex ... where the sound of prayer is heard five times a day." only part of = yalnızca bir bölümü ("only one part of" daha iyi oluırdu)... to flourish = hızla gelişmek, büyük canlılık göstermek... to segregate = (fiziki anlamda) ayırmak, ayrı yerlerde tutmak; burada "kaç göç"... sound of prayer = "ezan" kastediliyor... Otelin adı nasıl ama: Hotel Caprice... Erdoğan's $25 bathing suit includes a headscarf, a long-armed top and full-length pants. It fits loosely so as not to show off the outlines of her body and is made of a synthetic material that dries quickly. It features a design that looks like denim dotted with yellow shooting stars. scarf = "eşarp"... "başörtüsü" karşılığında "headscarf" kullanılıyor; çünkü "turban" deselerdi, Hint "türbanı" anlaşılacaktı... fits loosely = vücudu sarmıyor, vücuda oturmuyor... so as not to = ...mamak için... denim = bir cins pamuklu kumaş... With all that fabric, the suits still aren't perfect for swimming. "Water gets inside and it sticks to you," Erdoğan said. "But I don't have any other choice." fabric = kumaş... In the past, religious women in Turkey either didn't go to the beach or wore regular street clothing into the water. Most women at beaches in secular Turkey wear Western-style bathing suits.
The top company producing Islamic bathing suits, Haşema, says it sold 25,000 bathing suits last year and can't produce them quick enough to keep pace with demand. The company exports to Egypt, North America, England, and Australia. to keep pace with = ayak uydurmak, aynı hızda yol almak, geri kalmamak... supply & demand = arz ve talep... Mehmet Şahin said he founded Haşema (pronounced Ha-shay-ma), because of his own problems on the beach as a university student. Thirteen years ago, there was no company that made men's swimming trunks that extended from the bellybutton to the knees according to Islamic precepts, Şahin said. bellybutton = göbek... precept = kural, ilke, amir hüküm... "We used to have to cut off long pants. But we didn't find that very aesthetic," the bearded businessman said. "We developed the company according to our own needs ... but we found a place in the market." bearded = sakallı... The company expanded to include women's suits, now the company's top seller. Haşema's glossy catalogue shows more than a half-dozen different colours and floral patterns. glossy = parıltılı, (belki de ucuz ve zevksiz ama) şaşaalı... floral patterns = çiçekli desenler... Şükür Dölek, who sells the suits in Ankara, Turkey's capital, said his customers are well-off and religious. Most are professionals or university students. "Demand for the suits keeps growing. We can't keep enough in stock," Dölek said. well-off and religious = varlıklı ve dindar... Dölek said some of his customers are secular Turkish women, who apparently take off the removable Islamic headscarves and wear the suits because they're embarrassed to show their bodies on the beach. secular = laik... (Helal olsun walla -- yabancı muhabirlere de öğretmişiz bizi dindarlar ve laikler diye bölmeyi!!...) apparently = "öyle anlaşılıyor ki" yada "görünüşe bakılırsa, görüldüğü kadarıyla" şeklinde çeviriniz... removable = takılıp çıkarılabilir... to be embarrassed = utanmak, zor durumda kalmak... (Burada, vücut hatlarının şekilsizliğini saklamak isteyen "laik" hanımların da bu "mayo" lardan satın aldıkları, ama başörtüsü kısmını takmadıkları anlatılıyor) "Bathing suits don't have a religion," Dölek said. "Just like some women want to wear bikinis, others want to wear Haşema ... whatever the reasons may be." "Bathing suits don't have a religion" -- "Paranın dini olmaz" diye bilirdik, meğer mayoların da öyleymiş... The company, meanwhile, is still working on new products for eager beachgoers. "We're even trying to develop a suit that the sun can penetrate, so women can get a suntan," Şahin said. eager = istekli, hevesli... to penetrate = nüfuz etmek, içine işlemek... suntan = güneşten bronzlaşma...

THE REBIRTH OF THE MINELAYER NUSRET from The NTVMSNBC, News in English http://www.ntvmsnbc.com A Piece Of History Is To Be Restored To Its Former Glory August 14— A small warship that helped change history and that symbolises the Ottoman victory in the 1915 Çanakkale (Gallipoli) Campaign is to be salvaged, restored and converted into a museum. rebirth /Rİ-börØ/, düm-tek düzeninde = yeniden doğuş... minelayer = mayın döşeyici (to lay - laid - laid = yaymak, sermek kavramlarından)... minesweeper = mayın tarayıcı (sweep - swept - swept = süpürmek kavramından)... Metinlerden anladığım kadarıyla, pek az gemide her iki özelliğin birlikte olma durumu var, ama bu benim cahil mantığıma ters geliyor -- denizci bir arkadaş açıklık getirirse sevinirim... is to be restored = restore edilecek (to be + mastar yapısı gelecek zaman bildirir. Burada: to be + be restored, pasif)... former glory = önceki şan, eski ihtişam... symbolyse = -yse mı yoksa -yze mı? The minelayer Nusret, which for many years has been lying half sunk and abandoned in the port of Tarsus in the southern province of Mersin, is to be raised and restored. The = gemi isimlerinden önce "the" kullanılır: The Yavuz, gibi... half sunk = Geçerli bir ifade, ancak to sink sank - sunk fiilinin (az sayıdaki öteki başka fiiller gibi) past participle'ı (üçüncü hali) sıfat olarak kullanıldığında farklıdır: SUNKEN -- Yani "a sunk ship" diyemezsiniz, "a sunken ship" demek zorundasınız... During the Çanakkale War, known to the rest of the world as the Gallipoli Campaign, the Nusret won a place in history due to her contribution to the defeat of an Anglo-French fleet that was attempting to force its way through the Dardanelles. campaigne /kım-PEYN/ sözcüğünün anlamı için iyi bir örnek: "Gelibolu Muharebeleri"... Başka yerde "sefer" sözcüğü ile de çevrilebilir: Yani, belli bir amaca dönük bir "sefer" diyebiliriz; ancak birden fazla muharebe ve ilgili eylemleri içeren bir "sefer"... to force one's way through = zorla geçmeğe çalışmak... On the night of March 7-8, the vessel, under the command of Captain Hakkı Bey, laid a field of 26 mines in the waterway, in an area where Allied warships had been observed to manoeuvre during earlier bombardments of the Ottoman defences. vessel = tekne, sandaldan transatlantik'e hertürlü deniz aracı... waterway = denizde geçiş yolu... alliance /ıLAİ-ıns/ =ittifak... ally /Æ-lai/ = müttefik (çoğul: allies /Æ-laiz/ )... the Allied Forces = Dünya Savaşındaki "Müttefik" Kuvvetler... On March 18, when the Allied fleet of 18 battleships entered the strait, three of the vessels: the British warships Ocean and Irresistible and the French battleship Bouvet, struck mines laid by the Nusret and were sunk. Three other ships, the French Suffen and Gaulois and the Royal Navy battle cruiser Inflexible were damaged by shell fire from the shore. fleet = filo... the strait = boğaz (Çanakkale Boğazı kastediliyor)... the Dire Straits ("uğursuz, meşum, tehlikeli, felaketli boğazlar" -- en beğendiğim müzik gruplarından)...

(Arabanızda da, uzun yolda "cruising speed" yapıyorsunuz: ortalama rahat hız)... shell fire = top ateşi... After the naval defeat the Allied commanders then launched an invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula, withdrawing after seven months of fighting, defeated by the Ottoman army under the command of the German General Liman von Sanders. naval /NEY-vıl/ = denizciliğe veya donanmaya ilişkin (navy = donanma, sözcüğünden)... to launch /LO:NÇ/ = 1. başlatmak; 2. denize tekne indirmek; 3. havaya/uzaya füze/uydu vb fırlatmak... to withdraw = geri çekmek veya çekilmek (yani pekçok başka fiil gibi, hem geçişli hem geçişsiz kullanılabilir). withdrawal symptoms = ilaç/uyuşturucu bırakma semptomları/sıkıntıları... withdrawal method = şey, nasıl söylesem ki: bir doğum kontrol yöntemi işte... The Female Politicians Association [Kadın Siyasetçiler Derneği -- KASİDE] Chairwoman Yurdusev Arığ called on political parties to be fair while preparing the lists of their deputy candidates. called on = çağrıda bulundu... to be fair = adil olmak, hakça davranmak... Arığ said on Monday that parties should include women candidates who work for the party into the lists rather than transferring popular female candidates. Noting that Turkey granted women the right to elect and be elected earlier than a number of other countries, Arığ said that Turkish women failed to have an important place in Turkish political life despite this advantage. "Turkish women should apply to a political party according to their political backgrounds and should ask for responsibilities in order to reach the place they deserve in political life," Arığ said. According to a survey published in Turkish Daily News on Monday, the majority of the members of tribes in the east and southeast of the country will vote for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). AK Party is followed by People's Democracy Party (HADEP) which has joined forces with others for the elections under the umbrella of Democratic People's Party (DEHAP). Republican People's Party (CHP) takes the third place down the line. who... for? = kimin için, kimler için... tribe = kabile, aşiret... tribesmen = aşiret üyeleri... to vote = oy vermek... survey = alan araştırması, tarama... join forces with = güçlerini birleştirmek... under the umbrella of = şemsiyesi altında... In the survey, it was pointed out that the political parties, quite aware of the power of these tribes in the elections, try to obtain their votes and it was claimed that there was bargaining between the sides going on in Ankara. The survey noted that the tribes are seen to be closer to rightist parties when the history is taken into consideration. to point out = işaret etmek, belirtmek... "quite aware of... in the elections" = İngilizce'de iki virgül arasına alınan bu tür ifadelerin "antirparantez" anlam taşıdığını unutmayınız: FORMÜL: iki virgül eşittir bir parantez... to claim = iddia etmek, öne sürmek... to bargain = pazarlık etmek... take into consideration = dikkate almak, hesaba katmak... If I hadn't acted this way, I would have lost all my credibility,'' Özdemir added. Böylece, klasik bir III. Tip if'li tümce ile pasajı bitirdik... Metinleri "anlı şanlı" bir büyük ajansımızdan aldım, ama kaynak belirtmeyeceğim: Çünkü inanılmaz derecede kötü yazılmışlardı. * * * * * from Zaman (conservative) INDUSTRIALISTS WANT REDUCTION IN ELECTRICITY PRICES Some circles want the 10 percent reduction in natural gas prices which will be valid as of October 1 to be reflected also to electricity prices. The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry has not made a statement whether the reduction will also be reflected to the electricity prices while Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) Chairman Zafer Çağlayan said that reduction should also be made in electricity prices. reduction = 1. azaltma, indirme, indirim; 2. indirgeme... some circles = "bazı çevreler, muayyen mihraklar" (İngilizce Türkçe'ye ne kadar çok benziyor -- Türkçe'den çevirince!)... valid = geçerli... as of = itibarıyla, ...dan başlayarak (LÜTFEN bu deyimi not ediniz)... to be reflected = yansıtılmak... ***** PEOPLE AND EVENTS PAIN VS. GAIN OF EURO SWITCH January 1, 2002. By CNN's Jim Bittermann PESSAC, France (CNN) -- "Nothing hurts worse," an ancient Roman historian once wrote, "than the loss of money." And from the boot of Italy to the Irish isle, some Europeans are feeling the pain. ancient /EYN-şınt/ = çok eski dönemlere ait, klasik döneme ilişkin... boot = İtalya'nın coğrafyasına atıfta bulunan bir deyiş: Çizmenin ucundan... isle /AYL/ = 1. şiirlerde kullanılan "küçük ada" anlamına bir sözcük... 2. Ancak, kimi özel coğrafi adlarda da bu sözcük kullanılır: The British Isles /AYLZ/, The Isle of Wight... islet /AY-lit/ = adacık...
The Greeks are giving up their drachma, a currency they have used for nearly 3,000 years! In Italy, multi-zeroed lire are disappearing, as billionaires become millionaires and mere millionaires join the hoi polloi. multi-zeroed = bol sıfırlı... lire/liras = lira'nın çoğul biçimleri... hoi polloi /HOY-pı-LOY/ = avam, ayaktakımı (fazla kullanılmayan bir deyiş)... Milyarderler milyonere dönüşüyor, sıradan milyonerler ise avam sınıfına katılıyor... The Germans are trading in their proud deutschmark eagle for a chubbier euro one -- which some think looks like a bird on a high tension wire. trading in = Buradaki "in" edatı, halkın doyçmarkları içeriye, yani bankalara verip yerine yuro almalarını anlatıyor... chubby /ÇA-bi/ tombul, dolgun, şişmanca... high tension wire = yüksek gerilim hattı... The question of design is important to Europeans, whose currencies have long reflected their history and heritage, their art and literature, their invention and politics. heritage /HE-ritic/ = miras, kalıtım, özellikle de kültür mirası... Örneğin, "the American heritage" deyimi ile atalarından kendilerine uzanan kültür mirası veya Amerikalı olmanın anlamı gibi nüanslar dile getiriliyor... "If you see the new bills of euros they are nothing for us, they are very ... how you say ... sad," French currency dealer Gilles Jaillet says. currency dealer = para alım satımı ile uğraşan kimse, sarraf... Bay Jaillet'in gramerine ise pek aldırmayın: Fransızca konuşuyor... The new euro notes offer just bridges and windows that are meant to be ambiguous in origin so they cannot be identified with any particular country. that are meant to be = öyle olması istenen, bilinçli olarak planlanan... ambiguous in origin /æm-BİG-yuıs/ = kaynağı, kimliği belirsiz, kesin belirlenemeyen... be identified with = ile özdeşleştirilmek... Perhaps because when you handle money a little nationalism rubs off, the creators of the euro have always hoped that when Europeans handle it, a little collective identity will be left behind. (Sözcük ve mantık oyunu yapalım derken, anlam ızdırabı çeken berbat bir tümce!) handle money a little = (burada) biraz elleyince, biraz elinize alınca... nationalism rubs off = üstteki milliyetçilik cilası, tabakası sıyrılıp altından asıl kimlik görünmek... If so, the euro will be a success no matter what the exchange rate, because the real value of a currency is the strength it symbolizes. no matter what the exchange rate = döviz alım satım kuru ne olursa olsun... "Money is something you have to touch, you have to live with, to realize the value and above all the symbolic value it has," says Italian euro consultant Luigia Sommo. consultant /kın-SAL-tınt/ = danışman...
But more than a symbol, money is power. And by sharing a currency, Europeans are sharing power. If the continent can cooperate on such an intimate matter as money -- one of the most private subjects there is -- the euro may, in the end, be further proof that the nations of Europe have evolved beyond the wars and conflicts of the past. intimate /İN-timit/ = yakından, samimi, içini dışını bilir ölçüde... intimacy = yakınlık, yakından tanımış ve tanıyor olma... Şu sözcük ile karıştırmayınız: to intimidate /in-Tİ-mideyt/ = korkutmak, sindirmek... intimidation /intimi-DEY-şın/ korkutma, sindirme... Americans sometimes forget that it took nearly a half-century after they stopped killing each other in the Civil War before they were ready to cooperate in the establishment of a central bank and a common currency. it took nearly a half-century = neredeyse yarım yüzyıl sürdü... the Civil War = Amerikan İç Savaşı... the astablishment of a central bank = bir merkez bankasının kurulması... common currency = ortak para ('nın tesis edilmesi)... Europeans have taken about the same time after their last continental conflict to get to the same point. continental conflict = tüm kıta boyunca ihtilaf ve çatışma... And so as they turn in their francs and marks, pesetas and guilders, citizens of the eurozone are unquestionably giving up a little of their nationality and individuality. turn in = teslim etmek... Burada, bankalara götürüp vermek... unquestionably = hiç kuşkusuz... give up = teslim olmak, teslim etmek, bırakmak, vazgeçmek... It may be missed in some quarters, but in the end Europeans could be richer for it -- and not just in the monetary sense. http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/index.html
