THE YEAR OF THE GOAT Released: October 21, 2014 ABSTRACT

The Chinese calendar, commonly known as the Farmers’ Calendar, or the Hsia Calendar, is a fascinatingly accurate system, which not only records the passage of time, but is also a tool for fortune-telling. The famous traditional fortune-telling system – The Four Pillars of Destiny – is exactly referring to reading a person’s destiny from his birth data as presented in the Hsia calendar format. The unique feature of such calendar is that all information about time – year, month, day and hour are presented in terms of the five basic elements – metal, water, wood, fire and earth, which are believed to be the basic components of everything in the Universe. The relationship between the five elements accurately helps one predict what is to come by way of one’s fortunes and thus, one can by using this knowledge, multiply the good luck or minimize the bad luck in one’s life. THE YEAR OF THE GOAT The Year of the Goat, 2015, in the Hsia calendar, is symbolized by two elements – with Yin wood sitting on top of earth. According to the cycle of birth and destruction, which governs the inter-relationship between the elements, wood conquers earth and so they are on the destructive cycle and have fighting relationship. Normally such conflicting elements means disharmony. So there will be international conflicts and clashes. However, it seems such conflicts may be more easily resolved with compromise and concessions in 2015 as the nature of the Yin wood is a flower which is easy to adjust directions and much more flexible. Yin wood also symbolizes the small branches of tree which is not so stubborn and can easily adjust to changing circumstances. With such character, I can expect 2015 will be comparatively less violent than 2014 when the yang wood is a stubborn tree standing by its principles and refuses to bend. In 2015 the flexible and more moderate character of yin wood represents compromising attitude and makes it easier to reach agreement between conflicting interests. As such, it will be easier to arrive at solutions and make treaties to resolve conflicts and struggles . The Goat is July in the Western calendar, which is still hot summer season, the fire energy is still very powerful. Hidden inside the goat is yin fire, yin earth and yin wood. This is dry summer earth without any water to nourish the wood. As such the Goat is also considered the grave of

wood element and dry desert earth. The last two Gulf wars in the deserts of Middle East started in 1991 and 2003, both are years of the Goat, with thousands of US soldiers fought fiercely in Middle East Arabian deserts to liberate Kuwait in 1991 and to overrun Iraq in 2003. With the looming threat of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, it will not be surprising that another Gulf war will breakout in 2015.

The Chinese calendar of Heavenly stems and Earthly Branches goes on 60 years cycle. This means that we had experienced the same Yin wood Goat year 60 years ago in 1955 as well as 120 years ago in 1895. The year 1955 marked the signing of many International treaties for ending conflicts or for forming military co-operations. In Feb 1955, the Baghdad Pact of Mutual Cooperation was signed which is mutual defence treaty among Turkey, Britian, Iran, Pakistan and Iraq. West Germany joined NATO in May 1955, and the Soviet Union and other 7 communist countries formed the Warsaw Pact also in same year. There is Burma- Japan peace treaty was concluded and South east Asia Treaty Organization – another collective defence treaty was also formed in Feb. 1955. In year 1895, also the year of Yin wood goat, the Chinese made Treaty of Shimonoseki with Japan to end the first Sino- Japanese war. leading to massive national protests in China.

In Chinese Metaphysics, wood represents growth and activities. Yin wood in the human body is related to the neck, the spinal cord, the back and the liver organ. Yin wood is often compared to a flower or a twig of tree, which is fragile and easy to bend and break. Hence yin wood people are more moderate and flexible, easy to adjust to circumstance, they are mostly artists with skilful hands and fingers, good at playing musical instruments or handicraft arts such as sewing and tailoring. A good example is Mick Jagger, he had been the most successful rock star for 50 years and was in jail for possession of drugs in 1967, yet he maintained a healthy energetic figure at the age of 70 with good discipline in physical training, yoga, ballet dancing, and vegetarian diet. Even when he was a big rock star in the 1960s, he still completed most of studies in London school of Economics. It is such strong versatility, flexibility and adjustment spirit of yin wood that contribute to such eternal youth and success. Yin wood people are not so

aggressive, but more able to negotiate and compromise. So it is a year more able to refrain from aggressive actions and play cool and try best to find compromise solutions. It should be a better year to resolve international conflicts such as territorial disputes and political struggles. The Goat is strong earth element, in Chinese metaphysics it is the strongest earth as it is the month of July supported by summer fire. Inside the Goat there is hidden yin fire, yin wood and yin earth. So the fire energy still exist and the year is still favorable to energy business, air travel, sports, exercises, entertainment, restaurants, and fire is optimism which will continue to drive up the economy and the stock market. It is anticipated that 2015 the economic recovery in USA and Europe will sustain and continue and as there are less serious conflict like in 2014, the economic atmosphere will be more stable and steady with less dramatic fluctuations. Certainly the very powerful earth energy of the Goat will also bring earth disasters, earthquake, landslide, avalanche, collapse of buildings etc. The devastating 311 earthquake in Japan in 2011 also occurred on day of Ox and hour of Goat. There is total absence of water in the goat, so it is very dry earth which will also be a cause of forest fire, hurricane, typhoon, and severe weather change. The goat is “grave of wood” and this is not favorable to plants and trees and the environment. Hence the problem of global warming related severe weather disasters will continue and deepen and there will also be environmental disasters in 2015. One cannot rule out nuclear damages, air and sea pollutions leading to serious environmental destruction. Dry earth also symbolizes the road, such years also more easy to have serious traffic accidents on the road, so one should be careful and refrain from driving cars. The famous car accident that killed the actor James Dean happened on 30/9/1955 which is also year of yin wood goat. Lady Diana died in car accident in 1997 and she is also born on day of yin wood goat. On 11/6/1955 year of yin wood goat, there is serious accident in Le Mans car race with 83 people killed and at least 100 injured. In Chinese medicine, Earth element is stomach and pancreas, it is also related to cells and muscle, hence cancer disease is mainly caused by earth element getting out of balance. I have mentioned above that the Chinese calendar year goes on 60-year cycle. This means that we have experienced the same year of yin wood over goat in 1955 and 1895. Both years were marked with famous peace treaties and Joint defense pacts, such as the Sino Japan Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, and the Warsaw Pact, Baghdad Pact, Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, and West Germany joining NATO in 1954. Also there were serious earthquake in Slovenia and mid west of USA in 1895, and in 1955, there were serious earthquakes in California, in Egypt

and in Yuzha of China. Other natural disasters occurred in 1955 were hurricanes Diane hit NE of USA killed over 200 people in August, and in September, another serious hurricane Hilda killed about 200 people in Mexico. However, In these previous wood goat years 1895 and 1955, there were also positive innovations bringing advancements in life-style. The first Disneyland was opened in California in July, 1955, and the first McDonald shop was opened in Illinois in April, 1955. And 120 years ago in 1895 was the first American automobile race in history. Also Nobel Prize was established by Alfred Nobel in November 1985.

Her successful life very much reflected the positive quality of a yin wood woman, artistic, creative, versatile, flexible and well adjust to environment, and very charming and attractive to men. . In Chinese history a famous yin wood woman is the Empress Dowager of the Ching dynasty. She was born on 29/11/1835 at the hour of fire rat. This is yin wood goat year on a yin wood ox day, in the Fire Rat hour. Her four pillars is considered very noble in particular the birth hour of Fire Rat is called the “Most Noble Hour for a Yin wood person” as it is both intelligence element and Nobleman for yin wood. So it will not be a peaceful year but people are more easy to adjust and willing to negotiate and compromise hence there will be more peace treaties and agreements to avoid international clashes. Also there are natural disasters such as earthquake, landslide, tornado and hurricane and some environmental disasters and nuclear issues and disease and epidemic still prevail. The animal sign which is most unfavorable is the Ox which is in direct clash against the Goat. Such clashes will usually bring about turbulence, movements, accident or changes...As it is earth clash against earth, it will stimulate misfortunes related to earthquake, landslide, avalanche, collapse of building and traffic accidents on the road. The Goat creates earth penalty with Ox and Dog and these excessive earth will bring health problems in the stomach, pancreas, and even cancer. .People born in the year of the Ox will anticipate more traveling, or movements such as changing jobs or moving house.
