IC m20

Up again There is no dramatic change of position among the leaders in the IC  top 20 ranking of the world’s largest crane manufacturers this year compared to 2007. This lack of movement, however, does not reflect stagnation in the sales figures. All the top 10 companies have seen significant growth. IC  reports

T

opping the table this year is Liebherr with a more than US$500 million sales increase on last year. To give one example, the company owns the biggest market share of all terrain sales, with its factory in Ehingen, Germany producing some 43% of them worldwide. Following in the table close behind Liebherr is Cargotec, with its crane portfolio, including Hiab, Kalmar and MacGregor. It has seen the biggest increase of all the IC m20

ABOUT THE NUMBERS The IC m20 listing of the world's largest crane manufacturers is derived from the value of crane-related sales in the calendar year 2007. In the case of Japanese manufacturers, the fiscal year from 01 April 2007 to 31 March 2008. Information is from a range of sources, including financial reports (from publically  traded companies), companies’ own submissions and data from financial research organisations. While IC  strives to ensure that the data presented is as accurate as possible, we cannot guarantee it, so the table should only  be used a guide. If you have any relevant financial information or suggestions to help develop the listing please contact the editorial department. * Estimated figures for lifting equipmentrelated sales only.

companies, with sales reaching almost $2 billion more than 2007. In third place is Manitowoc. The US-based global manufacturer has also enjoyed a fantastic year with sales reaching $3.246 billion, compared to $2.235 billion the previous year. The company is well known for, among others, its heavy lift crawler cranes, widely used on wind energy  projects, especially in the US, among other energy applications. Manitowoc also impressed with the promise of a new 2,200 tonne capacity  crawler crane earlier this year, the Model 31000. The initial specifications were revealed during ConExpo, in March. Terex since last year’s ranking. An example of the company’s expansion philosophy  came in mid-October with the news that the company had acquired Canadian crane and crane service company Provincial Services Crane Specialists, in Allanburg, Ontario. Terex’s progress towards mass-production of mobile and crawler cranes has accelerated its sales figures by more than $800 million this year. Terex, like its competitors, is developing higher capacity cranes to meet the needs of large power generation projects across the globe. An example is the 3,200 tonne capacity CC 8800-1 Twin crawler. XCMG is notable as the highest ranking Chinese company, moving up one place to number 6. Its increased exports, including into western Europe, has caused a stir among

Into the second half There are two more loader crane manufactures in the top 20 – Palfinger and Fassi. They, along with the tower crane manufacturers, in particular, will be concerned with a sudden drop in construction projects starting around the world. Fassi has already warned of a 25 to 30% drop in European sales during 2009. This may well reflect much of what will happen in the industry, although there seems to be undiminished confidence when it comes to the future of power generation projects. There is also a widely held forecast that large-scale infrastructure developments will continue or soon pick up again. ■
