QUO VADIS·PRELUDE The illustration shows us Roman military musicians with buccinas, the forerunner of the modern horn.
A fanfare on these instruments establishes at once the atmosphere of the victorious military might of pagan Rome. Upon this, in illustration of the conflict in the story between this earthy power and the spiritual strength of Christianity, there follows a Christian chorus. The voices rise in appeal to Christ: "Quo Vadis, Domine? Lord, whither goest Thou? Tell us the road we should follow and whither it will lead us. Will it lead us out of doubt and darkness into faith and light? Is this the new destiny of man given him at Thy coming?" Into this chorus there now breaks the Roman fanfare that leads us to the operung of the story -
to the victorious legions returning home along the Appian Way under the
command of a certain Marcus Vinicius.
