Quiz 1: Answer
1)
Petroleum engineer can be divided into several groups. Name one of them and [3 marks] briefly explain his main duty. Petroleum geologists find hydrocarbons by analysing subsurface structures with geological and geophysical methods. Reservoir engineers work to optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production levels, and enhanced oil recovery techniques. Drilling engineers manage the technical aspects of drilling exploratory, production and injection wells. It also include mud engineer who manage the quality of drilling fluid. Production engineers, including subsurface engineers, manage the interface between the reservoir and the well, including perforations, sand control, downhole flow control, and downhole monitoring equipment; evaluate artificial lift methods; and also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water).
2)
List down three main stages in conversion of kerogen into hydrocarbon. [3 marks] Diagenesis, catagenesis, and metagenesis.
3)
Substances present in petroleumfall into four major groups. List down two of [4 marks] themand give one example of each group. Paraffins: alkanes (methane, ethane, etc), alkenes Naphthenes: cyclopentane, cyclohexane, decalin, cholestane. Aromatics: benzene, toluene, metaxylene, benzpyrene. Non-hydrocarbon: pyrrole, hydrogen sulphide, phenol.
4)
List down three top world oil producer. [3 marks] Russia, Saudi Arabia, United State.
5)
In the rock cycle shown in the figure below, give the name of therock that [3 marks] marked as (a), (b), and (c). (a) Intrusiveigneous rocks (b) Extrusive igneous rocks. (c) Sedimentary rocks.
(b)
(a) Intrusiveigneous rocks (b) Extrusiveigneous rocks. (c) Sedimentary rocks.
(c) (a)
6)
What is clastic sedimentary rock and list down two examples of this rock. [4 marks] Clastic sedimentary rocks are accumulations of clasts - little pieces of broken up rock which have compacted and cemented. Sandstone, shale, siltstone, conglomerate.
