Stitches and crochet techniques used Slip stitch Insert hook in next st, yo and draw through all loops. Single crochet Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo, draw through both loops on hook. Reverse single crochet Working from left to right, insert hook in sc to right of hook, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook. Invisible decrease - sc2tog Insert the hook in front loop of first st and in the front loop of the second stitch (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw up a loop through the first two front loops on hook, yarn over again and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook. Magic adjustable ring Make a loop with your yarn leaving 3” long tail. Insert hook in center of loop made, yo and draw up loop. Yarn over, pull through to make your first chain. (Do not count this as your first sc) Continue to crochet over the loop and the yarn tail until you have the required number of scs for your first round. For example, if the pattern calls for 5 scs, then sc 5 times into the ring. (Insert hook into the center of the ring and draw up loop, yo and draw through both loops.) When counting stitches, don’t count the one on the hook. When you’re finished, pull the tail to close the ring. Invisible finish off To make nice, invisible finish - thread tail onto tapestry needle. Insert needle under both loops of first st of the round. Insert needle between back and front loop of the last st of the last round and pull the yarn to secure. 1

Materials - 2 mm crochet hook - small amount of blue, white and black yarn, sport category - polyfill to stuff - a pair of 8 mm black eyes - 8 pieces of pipe cleaners, each 7 inches (17 cm) long - stitch marker, a long tapestry needle, scissors and sewing pins

Finished size If done with 2 mm hook and appropriate yarn - 6” (15 cm) tall and 11” (28 cm) wide (with stretched arms). If done with an E (3.5mm) hook - 8” (20 cm) tall and 18” (46 cm) wide (with stretched arms).

Gauge In single crochet, using 2 mm hook - 11 stitches x 13 rows = 2” (5 cm)

Image 7 - Merge one side of the arm together, insert pipe cleaner, then merge the other side of the arm together stuffing as you go.

Place top part over the bottom part with wrong sides facing and merge them together by working sc through both thicknesses. (Image 7) When sc’ing the 2 pieces together, if you find an extra stitch here or there, just work it in. It doesn’t stick out in the final product. To make the arms poseable, insert in each arm a pipe cleaner. Fold down the top inch of pipe cleaner, then hook a piece of blue yarn to the folded top of pipe cleaner (Image 8) and insert it into arm. With tapestry needle bring both ends of the yarn out, knot them together to secure the pipe cleaner to the tip of arm. (Image 9)

TIP: For stronger arms, fold each pipe cleaner in half and twist together making one little loop at the top. Insert the yarn through Image 8 4

the top loop and continue as described above. If working this way, you should use longer pipe cleaners. Stuff each arm as you sew them together. Do not put too much stuffing so the arms stay bendable. Before you sew the last arm together, add some stuffing to the neck area and to the whole body of the octopus so it’s firm and round. Using tapestry needle, finish by weaving in yarn ends you used to secure the pipe cleaners to the tips of arms. (Image 11)

Rnd 1: 10 sc into the center of ring (10) Fasten off! Note: If you prefer octopus with embroidered facial features (see Image 16 and 17) skip the instructions for mouth.

Finishing Sew eyes to the head 14 sts apart, between Rnds 23 and 24. (Image 14) Image 14 Sew mouth to the head between the eyes. (Image 15) If you prefer smiling octopus, use tapestry needle and black yarn to embroider eyebrows and mouth. Make two straight stitches, just above eyes, between Rnds 18 and 21, for the eyebrows. Embroider a smile centered between the eyes. Make one big horizontal stitch between Rnds 24 and 25 and secure it with a tiny vertical stitch to hold it down and shape a smile.
