INTRODUCTION

1.1

SCOPE

This PTS contains the piping classes for exploration and production facilities. The basis of design of the piping classes is given in PTS 31.38.01.10 This is a revision of the PTS of t he same number dated December 1999; a summary of the changes since the last revision is included in (1.5). The general requirements for piping systems are specified in PTS 31.38.01.11. Excluded from the scope of t his PTS are: •

1.2

oil and gas transmission pipeline systems; piping classes for refineries and chemical plants, which are included in PTS 31.38.01.12. DISTRIBUTION, INTENDED USE AND REGULATORY CONSIDERATIONS

Unless otherwise authorised by PETRONAS, the distribution of this PTS is confined to companies forming part of PETRONAS Group, and to Contractors nominated by them. This PTS is intended for use in exploration and production facilities, within the property limits as defined in ASME B31.3 par. 300.1. If national and/or local regulations exist in which some of t he requirements may be more stringent than in this PTS the Contractor shall determine by careful scrutiny which of the requirements are the more stringent and which combination of requirements will be acceptable as regards safety, economic and legal aspects. In all cases the Contractor shall inform the Principal of any deviation from the requirements of this PTS which is considered to be necessary in order to comply with national and/or local regulations. The Principal may then negotiate with the Authorities concerned with the object of obtaining agreement to follow this PTS as closely as possible. 1.3

DEFINITIONS

The Contractor   is the party which carries out all or part of the design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning or management of a project or operation of a facility. The Principal may undertake all or part of the duties of the Contractor. The Principal is the party which initiates, and ultimately pays for, the project. The Principal will generally specify the technical requirements. The Principal may also include an agent or consultant, authorised to act for the Principal. The word shall indicates a requirement. The word should indicates a recommendation. 1.4

SUMMARY OF CHANGES SINCE THE LAST REVISION

1.5.1 Introduction This revision is mainly an update of the existing piping classes to align with the latest developments. The main changes are listed below.  An overview of the changes per piping class is given in Appendix A.

1.5.2 Pressure/temperature rating

PTS 31.38.01.15 January 2010 Page 5 1.5.3 Piping classes  Alloy 625, Alloy 825 and 6Mo piping classes with solid and clad material have been developed for the need of recent projects. Piping classes with soft seated ball valves have been replaced due to change from BS 5351 to ISO 17292, which includes a change in pressure/temperature rating. Piping classes with carbon steel galvanised piping are only applicable for fire fighting service and have therefore been removed from this PTS. Piping classes with pipe clamp connectors have not been issued with this revision due to a review on the design verification of the various manufacturer specific clamp connectors. Due to the medium (sodium hypochlorite), titanium piping class 16041 has been subject t o fugitive emission tightness class A. 1.5.4 Valves PETRONAS International is working on enhanced group philosophies regarding fugitive emissions on a toxicological and environmental base. This have been applied on the selection of valves and reflect piping classes which are suitable for fugitive emission tightness class A. See PTS 31.38.01.10-Gen, para 3.10.  ASTM A216 grade LCB material have been deleted from group piping classes, to be replaced with the now widely available ASTM A216 grade LCC material. This change has allowed higher class ratings for new piping classes. Flanged short pattern triple eccentric butterfly valves have been introduced for DN 200 and larger as an economic alternative for gate valves. Due to a higher performance, these valves have also replaced wafer type butterfly valves class 150 and 300. Dual plate check valves have been introduced for DN 300 and larger sizes, as an economic alternative for swing type check valves. BS 5351 ball valves have been withdrawn and replaced by ISO 17292. Due to a deviation in pressure/temperature rating between both specifications, new piping classes have been developed (see 1.6.3). The maximum temperature of soft seated ball valves have been increased from 120 to 150 °C, which is the maximum allowable temperature for PTFE and Devlon V seats. Ball valves with electroless nickel plated (ENP) balls have been removed from the piping classes and replaced by valves with stainless steel balls. See PTS 39.01.10.11-Gen. 1.5.5 Stud bolts Bolt lengths have been reviewed and verified. 1.5.6 Spectacle blin ds/spades Spectacle blinds have been reviewed for ergonomics and limited to the maximum allowable size in accordance with PTS 31.38.01.11-Gen. Spades have been added for all sizes. 1.5.7 Gaskets For pressure classes and sizes up to/incl. DN 600, stainless steel spiral wound graphite gaskets with a stainless steel inner ring and a carbon steel outer ring have been specified. The manufacturing standard for spiral wound gaskets has changed from BS 3381 to ASME B16.20. New gaskets have been introduced f or duplex stainless steel and titanium piping classes. 1.5.8 Miscellaneous The maximum size of vents and drains has been increased, relative to t he header size. Non-piping items such as level gauges and level displacer have been removed from the piping classes. Thermowells

have

PTS 31.38.01.15 January 2010 Page 6 1.5.9 Impact testing of austeniti c stainless steel For application at temperatures below –101 °C, ASME B31.3 para 3.2.3.2.2 requires impact testing at the lower design temperature. This requirement has been reflected in the applicable austenitic stainless steel grade 304 cryogenic piping classes, through impact testing at –196 °C.
