General Topic: Maintenance and repair/rehabilitation of rigid pavement Background of the Study The continuous economic growth leads to the further development of roads and highways, and consequently, to the increase in the rate of traffic. With this, pavement experiences cracks and damages sometimes earlier than expected and this can lead to its deterioration. Rehabilitation and repair of a road pavement is an important phase in maintaining and, in some cases, prolonging the life span of a pavement. It happens when the pavement is almost incapable of meeting its intended purpose or when motorists feel uneasy and uncomfortable using the said road. Maintenance, which include repair and/or rehabilitation, should be laid down to highways to continuously serve the motorists. There are two types of pavement and the rehabilitation and repair procedure for each type is different from oneanother.Rigid pavement has longer lifespan than flexible pavement, thus requiring less maintenance budget. In the Philippines, major roads are usually flexible pavements but one of the most well-known and probably the busiest thoroughfarein Metro Manila is a concrete pavement. It is the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or more commonly referred to as EDSA. C4 or Highway 54, as some referred to it, serves almost a thousand of motorists every day andnow needs proper maintenance. This study focuses on the rehabilitation and repair of a rigid pavement (EDSA) – the steps and procedures a rigid pavement undergoes. Objectives of the Study The objectives of this study are: 1. To identify the properties and present state of the pavements in EDSA; and 2. To determine the necessary schemes to rehabilitate the pavements in EDSA. Methodology The data needed for this study such as the present condition of EDSA and the rehabilitation methods will be obtained from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The report will be presented in video format.
