The Ideal Order by Christoph Bartneck Dr. Rob Park’s life is out of order. His estranged wife is leaving him, the relationship to his daughters is strained and his academic career is at a dead end. He escapes into the cult of LEGO and the study of classification systems. By sorting his collection of LEGO bricks he reconnects to his daughters and he maintains his sobriety while maneuvering in the bizarre world of academia. Prof. Dr. Smith and his newly found Adult Fans Of LEGO help him to find a new structure for himself, his brick collection and his family. 198 pages, 10 USD, available from Amazon and others.
Editorial Reviews: The whole book whilst interlaced with the LEGO theme really is about the lead character’s life changing and morphing into his new self. Having something to focus on to escape from a crisis I’m sure is something most people can relate to. Overall it was an interesting read, certainly an interesting angle, not only as it’s told from the mans perspective, but it’s also quite raw. - Ryan McNaught, LEGO Certified Professional There are parts in it that every AFOL, particularly thosewithyoungfamilies, will relate to. The discussions between theprotagonistandhis colleague quite enlightening and you may well learn alotaboutdifferent approaches to nomenclature and taxonomies and howtheyrelateto sorting and naming LEGO parts. - Huw Millington, Brickset A nice reading book that we AFOLs will identify with as we the protagonist return to the world of LEGO. - HispaBricks
Introduction
1
Introduction LEGO bricks inspired children in the past, stimulates them today and hopefully helps them in the future. The LEGO Group’s brick system nurtures creativity and promotes systematic thinking. But LEGO bricks do not only leave adults with positive memories of their childhood, it also symbolizes the idea of a perfect system. I have seen many business presentations in which LEGO bricks were used to symbolize how products or components seamlessly integrate. Similar to other systematic products, such as stamps or coins, LEGO bricks attract a large community of collectors and enthusiasts also known as AFOL (Adult Fans Of LEGO). The fact that the LEGO Group gives sets and bricks unique numbers even further cultivates the collecting instinct. But it has become a real challenge with more than 43,000 different bricks listed at Bricklink. Only very few collectors can afford to purchase and store all the different bricks. One of the first steps in building a collection is to acquire and organize information about all the objects of interest into a catalog. It is a pity that the LEGO Group is not more forthcoming with sharing information about their bricks. Certainly the LEGO Group has a database of their bricks and sets, but they don’t share this information with the public. Occasionally they collaborate with commercial publishers, which resulted in the first “LEGO Collector’s Guide” (Steiner, 2008). It is up the enthusiasts to collect and organize information and websites, such as Brickset and Bricklink, these demonstrate how powerful crowdsourcing can be. There is even a chance that these online communities have more and better information than the LEGO Groups itself, since their databases include information about production variations and misprints, such as the famous Princess Leia (lic.stw.456.2009.05) misprint. When children build things like cars, houses and ships, they cannot be limited to the objects, but the stories which they engage in, also include humans. Of course you could build humans from standard bricks, but these figures would have to be large to have the sufficient level of detail. The matching size of the houses that would have to be built for these figures would be huge. Such houses would require an enormous number of bricks and they would go beyond the scale that young kids would be able to manage and play with. Furthermore, humans built from basic LEGO bricks still look crude. Humans are extremely sensitive to the appearance of humans and even slight deficiencies attract our attention (Etcoff, 1999). In this light, it makes sense to invest the extra effort to produce specific LEGO bricks that resemble humans. So in 1978 the LEGO Group introduced human like figures, Minifigures, and these have been an overwhelming success (Humberg, 2008). The LEGO Group produced more than 4 billion Minifigures over the last 32 years (LEGO A/S, 2010, p. 14). The LEGO Group has also increased its variety of Minifigures over the years. The number of new Minifigures released per year is growing rapidly (see Figure 1). In 2015, the LEGO Group released 704 new Minifigures. More than half of the Minifigures appeared in the last eith years. Furthermore, the Minifigures have been granted their own product line, the “LEGO Minifigure Collectibles”. This raise in popularity might have also triggered the publication of the first dedicated Minifigures book (Lipkowitz, 2009). His book presents photographs

Figure 1: Introduction of new Minifigures per year
Striving for more human like figures did not stop with the Minifigures. In 1997 the LEGO Group introduced even more anthropomorphic figures, possibly in order to compete with the Barbie™ brand. This dolls type of product can be considered an attempt to claim a larger market share of toys for girls. I have to admit that due to practical limitations I have not yet been able to include these non-standard scale figures, such as LEGO Scala and LEGO Duplo. I might be able to include them in a second edition of this book. The sensitivity for the human shape might also be the reason why I was so disappointed by the quality of the representation of Minifigures in the online communities, with the notable exception of Huw Millington’s work on Brickset. Macro photography is challenging and requires studio equipment. I hope that my photographic skills help more people to appreciate the beauty and variety of LEGO Minifigures. The Minifigures in this book are depicted at the scale of nearly 1:1, giving the reader the full impression of each Minifigure. Given the considerable number of Minifigures, it is likely I made mistakes. Please send me your corrections or any other feedback you might have to
[email protected]. It will help me to create a better edition in the future. Minifigure Nomenclature An important aspect for the organization of any objects is a naming system. It enables the exchange and analysis of information about the objects. The LEGO Group does not maintain an identification number for Minifigures, but they rather focus on the parts that make up a Minifigure. Peeron works along the same lines and also Bricklink has an inventory of even the smallest LEGO brick. But in addition Bricklink gives a name to each Minifigure. Unfortunately, their naming system has grown organically and is therefore not particularly systematic. Largely, but not completely, it relies on the themes provided either by the LEGO Group or the community. This ordering system, also known as taxonomy, is a good starting point and it has also been used for the nomenclature proposed. I improved the theme taxonomy by introducing higher-level concepts (e.g. licensed) and the unification of several sub themes.

Table 1: The theme level codes (continued)
Introduction
5
The nomenclature is based on the three levels of themes and the inclusion of the year. Each theme received a three letter code, listed in Table 1, which already includes the codes for even non-standard scale Minifigures. The later resolved the need to distinguish between, for example, the City Minifigures from the Town Minifigures. All the figures in the Town precede the figures from the City theme. The nomenclature for Minifigures used in this book is: hhh.mmm.lll.yyyy.ss where: h m l y s
denotes the high theme level denotes the medium theme level denotes the low theme level denotes the year in which the figure was first released denotes a serial number
How to read the book The main part of this book lists most of the Minifigures produced by LEGO. The information provides the following information: Name Emperor Chang Wu

Rarity
Code is based on the taxonomy and nomenclature described in this book while the BL Code referes to the Bricklink identifier. The rarity index is based on Bricklink prices. The more stars the rarer the Minifigure. Limitations The knowledge about Minifigures and LEGO sets is growing organically. The community that grew around the Bricklink and Peeron websites is constantly refining the information. I do not think that we will ever reach a state of absolute knowledge of the Minifigures and while working on this book I realized that I will also have to accept certain constraints and ambiguity. First, this book only lists Minifigures that were released inside of a set. Sometimes Minifigures appear of which we know that they were never part of a set, such as various fan club releases, but sometimes we find figures of which
6
Introduction
we just do not know their origin or the release date of the set. In any case, some of them have been excluded from this book for now. Also, this book is limited to figures that were released up to and including 2015. Moreover, all non-standard scale figures, such as from Duplo have also been excluded. I hope that this books is still interesting even with these limitations. References • Etcoff, N. L. (1999). Survival of the prettiest : the science of beauty (1st ed.).
