Roles Sekhmet is associated with medicine, healing, and disease. In ancient Kemet, the people would try to placate her so that she would keep plague and sickness away. Her priests were often the doctors and surgeons of the ancient world.

Sekhmet also represented divine vengeance and the consequences thereof. She represented the Left-Hand of God with Whom the enemies of Netjer, Ma'at and the King would have to answer. She was one of the Eyes of Ra. Sekhmet led the pharoahs in battle and protected them with arrows of flames. Her body represented the harshest part of the day, the midday sun. Her breath was said to create the desert, and was also the hot desert wind.[2]

Festivals Myths

In the legend of Ra and Hathor, Sekhmet was released by Ra to slay humans who were plotting against him. Made intoxicated by blood lust, she would have destroyed all of mankind if Ra had not taken pity on us. He tricked her by dyeing beer blood-red with pomegranate juice which she drank believing it to be human blood, and became drunk. She soon forgot her anger and we were saved from destruction. Prayer Associations The Names of Netjer are not static divinities like their counterparts in other cultures (i.e., Goddess of Love, God of War, Goddess of Sex, etc). They are not simply relegated to their specific spheres of influence and are therefore not powerless beyond those realms. Common Misconceptions Sekhmet is not one face of a dichotomy with Bast. In ancient times, she was never considered the fiercer, "business side" of Bast and She is not considered so now.

Bast worship was prevalant in Lower Egypt while Sekhmet's worship was prevelant in Upper Egypt, but this dichotomy does not make them sisters. [5]

A myth where Set, having been denied the throne of Egypt in favour of Heru-sa-Aset, engages in a series of quarrels and contests with the young Heru. Summary: The Gods have met in council to decide who shall take the throne of Wesir. They quarrel over who is best suited -- Ra is indebted to Set, as He slays Apep for Him every morning. Also, Heru is young. Shu suggests that Heru take the throne, as he is Wesir's son. Djehuty writes to Nit who decrees that Heru should take the throne. Ra is angry for a while, but is quickly placated by Hethert. Each God states His case. Some Gods favour Set for his seniority, while others favour Heru for his lineage. Aset,Heru's mother, upsets Set by trying to intervene, so the council is moved and Aset is told not to enter. Aset is very clever and manages to enter the council several times. There are a handful of conflicts between Heru and Set. In the end, Heru is proven capable of taking the throne. He is crowned, but Set is allowed to accompanyRa in his barque daily, among other great gifts. Links to the whole myth:

Set is not evil, and the chaos he brings is different from the chaos wrought by Apep. Set brings about change by tearing away the things you no longer need, and this can be an uncomfortable process to say the least. He will not coddle you and will not abide self-pity. His strictness can be mistaken for callousness, and sometimes his actions seem damaging and destructive.

Other Views Set can be about something other than the destructive part of His being, as there are some who have experienced the less stoic and stringent side of this god. He can be accommodating, emotional and laid back for sure. A part of Set challenges one to see beyond the barriers, self-made or not; and, sometimes those barriers are but tests to search areas of one's self, for both Him and for one's own knowledge. Sometimes the face Set presents to one is mirror to the one presented to Him.

A youth with a sidelock, sometimes sitting on the lap of his mother Aset Heru-pa-Khered is depicted as a child holding one finger to his mouth (a direct copy of the hieroglyph for "child," not related to the modern meaning of "silence" we see in that gesture). Flanking his father Wesir with Aset on the other side Can appear as a hawk or as a hawk-headed man, wearing the Double Crown (pschent) of Lower Kemet.



Uniter of the Two Lands Savior of His Father

Heru-sa-Aset is associated with kingship. He is associated with heka, and with justice and victory. Heru-sema-tawy (Harsomtus or Harsomptus) is a specialized form of Heru as a uniter of the Two Kingdoms. Stele depicting Heru-pa-Khered standing on the back of a crocodile, holding snakes in His outstretched hands were erected in temple courtyards, where they would be immersed or lustrated in water; the water was then used for blessing and healing purposes as the Name was attributed with many protective and healing powers. It is perhaps ironic in this light that late myths describe Heru-pa-Khered as being both physically weak and incapable of protecting himself, relying upon the power of His mother Aset to protect Him until His manhood.

Roles Unlike His father (Geb), older brother (Wesir), twin brother (Set), and nephew (Heru-sa-Aset), Heru-wer never served as the Nisut of Kemet. This left Him free to explore other aspects of life, like booze, war, and women! Heru-wer is a strong Name, and can be called upon to help overcome difficulties in your life. One area He has taken to particularly is helping in areas of finances, especially income. He works with Wepwawet to provide new opportunities in jobs.

Festivals One major festival is His birthday, the 2nd Day Upon The Year The Feast of The Beautiful Reunion is a celebration of both Heru-wer and Hethert. Hethert left almost a year ago, and has been returning since the winter solstice. The two are finally back together. It is a festival of love and togetherness. The feast takes place towards the end of the year.

Creation Story and Myths There is a myth describing the first appearance of Heru-Behdety, a form of Heru-wer taking the appearance of the winged sun disk. Heru-wer heard of a plot to over throw him, and went to Ra for assistance. Ra turned Him away, insisting that He could not help Heru, lest Heru be judged weak. The fight waged for some time, until the forces of isfet began to overtake Heru's army. Heru once again cried out to His father, Who blessed Heru with the form of the blazing sun-disk, so that he could be victorious over the forces of isfet.
