Bac2ground The 7uddy system can be defined as a procedure in which two people( the buddies( operate together as a single unit so that they are able to monitor and help each other. During dangerous activities or where there is a dangerous environments the main benefit of the system is improved safety> each may be able to prevent the other becoming a casualty or rescue the other in a crisis. ?ithin !DO this has been refined to include wor'forces of three or more persons( where nominated persons @in a ratio observer 0 wor'ers depending on numbersA are used to monitor the safety of the group and alert other services in the event of an incident. s part of 2ompany %afety !olicy( the B&uddyC %ystem provides a structured approach to ensuring that wor'ers performing potentially haardous tas's( or wor'ing in high-ris' locations( wor' together or as a BteamC to ensure each otherCs safety

Purpose The purpose of this procedure is to outline the requirements for the B&uddyC %ystem and the principles that individuals must adhere to in ensuring their own personal safety and the safety of their co-wor'ers( who may be wor'ing alongside them in a haardous area( or underta'ing a haardous tas'.

Changes to the Document *esponsibility for the up'eep of the Document shall be with the )unctional !roduction Team 3eader UO!( the Owner. 2hanges to this document shall only be authorised and approved by the Owner. Users of the Document who identify inaccuracy or ambiguity can notify the 2ustodian or his0her delegate and request changes be initiated. Confined Space Entry (eference P(-./ Entry into a Confined Space #ntry into a 2onfined %pace will always require the attendance of a B&uddy 0 %afety ?atchC who will be positioned outside of the space( but with the ability to observe all persons wor'ing in the space. The ratio of BB&uddy 0 %afety ?atchC to wor'ers shall be as stated in %ection 1.. #ach B&uddy 0 %afety ?atchC will have primary responsibility for his 0 her nominated charges. .
The *esponsible %upervisor shall chec' the H%! and ensure that the provision of a B&uddy 0 %afety ?atchC has been included. ll safety requirements for the confined space entry shall be chec'ed and verified.
