Introduction Polyboard is packed full of very powerful features and as usual with most professional software many of these features are unknown and unexploited by 80% of its users. To help you use power of Polyboard we have set up Quick Design Libraries. These libraries are a set of different materials, hardware and placement rules that will help you change the visual aspect and the way you assemble your project quickly and easily. To fully benefit from these new libraries you will have to know how to use them. This knowledge is called the Quick Design Method. The following document will explain the libraries and the method.
For more information, watch the Quick Design videos on the Polyboard download page of our website here. The Quick Design libraries have been set up with 3 objectives in mind: 1. To help a novice use Polyboard as a design tool to set up cabinets and projects quickly without having to fully understand the intricacies of the way the project will be built. 2. As an introduction to using and making Manufacturing Methods (these methods are like a style sheet that automatically sets up the way you make a project). 3. To create a framework for using and sharing library elements.
Please note: if you just want to design a project to send to an approved supplier to cut and machine, simply install the libraries and start designing using the Quick Design Materials. See page 6, section ‘3 Types of User’. You do not need information on manufacturing methods and naming procedures.

Standard Naming We have organised the Quick Design Libraries using a standard naming procedure to enable users to share library elements. We want to develop a standard so that libraries can be easily understood and used by everyone. This manual explains how we have named the different elements. Our objectives are to have names that: ●● Are easily read and recognised by everyone for what they are. ●● Are easy to sort and organise into groups. ●● Fit into the Polyboard name fields. When possible, the naming convention used follows theses principles:

3 Types of Users Note that Quick Design names are set up to help manage and share a large range of library elements.
This document explains how to use the Quick Design Libraries and Method.
As each element can contain a large number of parameters, it’s impossible to describe all the parameters in its name. For this reason we have given an abbreviated code to significant parameters.
According to what you are trying to do with Polyboard certain parts of this document will be more or less useful to you.
If you don’t understand the coding, this can make the name seem at first glance obscure. If you are naming elements for use by people who do not understand the code you can just change the name. These libraries propose an alternative way of using Polyboard that we hope you will find useful and fun. Having been developed recently, please consider them as a beta version that will inevitably need tweaking and improving. So don’t hesitate to send us your suggestions and remarks. Also feel free to ask if you have new elements that you wish us to include in the libraries. We hope that you will enjoy using them. Note that this document explains Quick Design libraries version 2.00. So if you have installed version 1.00 go to the Wood Designer website and install the updated libraries. Contents

Here is a classification of the different user types and tasks you may or may not want to accomplish and the different parts of this manual you’ll need to read.
1. You want to design a project and use an approved supplier If you are using Polyboard to design your projects with the free version and want to process your project via an approved supplier you don’t need to understand how to set up your project for manufacturing. You can just use the Quick Design Panels Materials libraries to design your project. Send the design to your supplier who will then set up the assembly and hardware according to their own manufacturing method and prepare your project for machining and assembling on site. Read this section Materials Libraries > Panels > Quick Design Materials on page 12. And watch the Quick Design videos on here. WoodDesigner.org | 6

2. You want to build the project yourself
a. Applying the real materials
To build your project in a home workshop will require at least being able to change the Quick Design materials to real materials.
The Quick Design project that you receive from a customer will be organised using Quick Design materials that the customer has set up to give the visual aspect required.
For this you will need to understand how to change the Default materials method to a buildable materials method.
These panels must be associated to a real panel that you have in stock or can buy from your wood yard or materials supplier.
Knowledge in hardware placement is not usually necessary for a home build as you’ll probably be assembling and adding hardware by hand drilling with biscuit jointers, dowels, dominos, etc.. Read all of the Materials Libraries section from page 10. And watch the Quick Design Contruction Materials video.
3. You are an approved supplier or manufacturer If you are an approved supplier or manufacturer processing files sent to you by designers using the Quick Design Libraries you’ll need to process these projects so that they fit your own manufacturing methods. This will require that you understand well how the Quick Design Method works. Processing a Quick Design file to be manufacturable will require 2 steps:

If the customer has applied a texture from the Quick Design Manufactured Panels library the reference of the real material will be written in the ‘texture’ field of the material. The client/designer may also have added a material reference to the Description field. It will be for you to either use these references or discuss with the customer a best fit substitute. If the customer has just added a colour, it will be for you to get a best fit from the materials you have available. Note: to display the client/designer’s original design in your Polyboard, you must have a materials library activated that does not contain the Quick Design Materials. Contact us for more information on how to set up your libraries as an approved supplier. If the customer has added an image file you will have to discuss with him the way he wants to build the part.

For instance, in the case of façade components it will be necessary to propose different pre-manufactured component or offer to make them to the design specifications. In all cases it will be preferable to get validation of the final project before manufacturing. It is also possible to ask the customer to use only the specific materials you have in your own library. For this send us your texture library which we will make available for downloading. In all cases it will be necessary to adjust the pricing according to the actual up to date prices of your suppliers.

b. Applying the manufacturing method To machine all the parts with the correct assembly details and hardware you will have to apply a manufacturing method that complies with your machining specifications. You can use or adjust our standard Quick Design Methods or create your own as needed. In both cases you will have to adjust the pricing on hardware and machining to reflect your company. If you need help setting up your specific manufacturing methods don’t hesitate to contact us.

Installation To use our Quick Design Method you’ll need to install the Quick Design Libraries on your computer with Polyboard pointing to them. This requires the following operations: downloading the files, copying them to the correct folders, uncompressing and then setting them up with Polyboard.

Note: you will automatically get the Quick Design Libraries (excluding Textures) when you download and install Polyboard from our website.
Note that if you can’t see the ProgramData folder it’s probably because it’s hidden by Windows.
However, due to a maximum installer file size limit, the Quick Design Textures library will not be installed. To get this as well, go to the Polyboard download page and install only the Textures library.

If you have previously installed Polyboard without the libraries, please install the Quick Design Materials and Methods libraries as well.

In this case go to the Control Panel and use the Folder Options to display hidden folders and files.
Tip: if you want to share your library files between several computers and Polyboard installations, decompress the files into a DropBox folder.
Downloading
When activating point Polyboard to the DropBox folder and all updates made on one computer will be copied to all the DropBox folders on other computers.
The first thing you have to do is to download the compressed library files to your computer.
How to activate Quick Design in Polyboard
Once on your computer, copy each file into a specific folder and decompress them.
Once the libraries are installed on your hard disk you have to point Polyboard towards the folders into which you have copied the files.
You must use these Polyboard folders to install your libraries:

Materials Libraries The Quick Design Materials Libraries are set up to help anyone with a basic knowledge of Polyboard to quickly design and play with different design options ‘on the fly’. These libraries not only make it easy to quickly modify the appearance of single cabinets in the ‘cabinet edit’ mode but will enable you to change the visual aspect of entire projects without having to modify each individual cabinet that makes up your design. Each materials library...Panels, Edging, Bars and Panel Structures work together with their specific sub-method to create a Quick Design Method. Here’s a quick explanation of how the Materials libraries are organised with their sub-methods. In general Polyboard materials are set up and assigned to specific parts. Changing the design aspect of a cabinet requires either going into the properties of each part and applying another material or creating a sub-method and applying it to the cabinet. This method of working has several disadvantages: ●● Playing quickly with design options can be difficult and tedious. ●● The panel’s libraries require the creation of specific panels for each change in design. This can make Contents

navigating the library cumbersome, as some panels may only be used for one project or only used to display a design option. ●● Changing the global design of projects made of several cabinets requires changing each individual cabinet. ●● Creating designs using image files to decorate parts is not easily manageable. To overcome these problems, the Quick Design materials libraries propose another work flow organisation, the Quick Design Method. Using a specific manufacturing sub-method, a specific material is assigned to each part of a cabinet. To change the aspect of the part requires simply changing the material. This makes it possible to: ●● Change globally the aspect of a project without having to change individual cabinets. ●● Apply image files to specific parts to embellish the design. ●● Minimise the number of materials in the libraries. The materials libraries are divided into 4 sections, let’s have a look how each section is organised.

1. Panels The Panels Materials library is the main design library. The Quick Design Method uses a combination of the Panels Materials library and an associated sub-method. When you display the list of panels materials, you can see that the libraries are organised into 2 main sections: 1. The Quick Design section, materials named ‘000-xxxx’. 2. The Generic Materials section. We have assigned a specific sort number to the materials description. To display the list of materials sorted by type just click the ‘Material’ title. According to whether the list is sorted ascending or descending, the materials will be sorted by groups with the Quick Design materials either at the top or at the bottom of the list.

Quick Design Materials
Generic Materials
These materials are all named ‘000-name of part’.
The Quick Design Materials will enable you to play around with the design aspects of your cabinets and projects.
If you have started your design using the Quick Design default materials method each part of your cabinet will be made from the appropriate Quick Design ‘000-xxx’ material. This means that you can change the visual aspect of your cabinet simply by changing the material aspect associated with the part. If you haven’t used the Quick Design Materials sub-method to build your cabinet, it’s very quick to change your cabinet into a Quick Design cabinet by applying the Quick Design Materials ‘default’ sub-method. Just go to Libraries > Sub-methods > Materials Styles. Select the default method and apply it to your cabinet. All the parts will now be assigned the appropriate Quick Design material, and can be edited by changing the material’s aspect. See the Changing your Design video for details. If you are designing a project to be sent to an approved supplier, you should only use the Quick Design Materials. Your supplier will set up the real materials and hardware according to his own factory facilities.

However they will not produce the correct cutting lists. As each part has its own material, Polyboard will write the cutting lists with a bunch of different materials. To make Polyboard correctly organise the cutting lists we have included a set of ‘generic materials’. How to use Generic Materials Once your design is set up with the Quick Design Materials to be visually appealing, we must transform the quick design materials into ‘real’ materials that can be listed and cut. The idea of the generic materials is to assign a type of material to a set of parts rather than individual parts. A simple example would be a design that has a melamine carcass and coloured facades using a manufactured board from a specific supplier like Egger. To apply the materials necessary to create coherent cutting lists go to Libraries > Sub-methods > Materials Styles. Select the style ‘mela/car-19/inn-16/bac-8/fac-egger 0190’ and apply it to your project.

Now your project is set up using the generic materials, the main carcass in ‘mela 0190’, drawer inners ‘mela 0160’ and façade elements in ‘egger 0190’. To change the aspect of the carcass you must now change the generic material ‘mela 0190’ and to change the façade material ‘egger 0190’. Polyboard will now produce a cutting list with 4 material types: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Mela 0190 (carcass) Mela 0160 (drawer inners) Mela 0080 (backs and drawer bottoms) Egger 0190 (façade elements)
If you know the real materials for each type you can just substitute the real material references for the generic material in the workshop. If you want to add a reference that lists the real name of the material just type the reference into the Description field. The Quick Design Libraries contain a list of generic materials that correspond to the texture libraries. If you are working with a specific panels supplier you can add Generic Material names with the supplier’s name.
The naming convention used is: ‘Supplier name 0160’ Where the code represents the thickness in 4 digits. Using 4 digits will enable you sort the list and insert variations of a thickness. For instance ‘egger 0160’ represents a 16mm Egger board in one colour, whereas ‘0161’ will represent the same thickness in another colour. The number will sort the panels into organised groups when you click the ‘Materials’ title bar. Note: Quick Design Materials also contain a series of materials with names starting ‘ZZ-’. These are materials that are used for display purposes only, their price is always ‘0’ and they are meant to be ignored in the cutting lists. You can use these materials for creating items and accessories that will not be counted in your manufacturing. Have a look at the Quick Design Construction Materials video for a detailed explanation of these points. There is today an enormous and constantly growing supply of different manufactured panels. As a result, customers/designers demand highly personalised projects with specific materials.

It would be difficult to maintain and manage a materials library that covers all of the possible panels on the market. Using generic materials and replacing them with a specific panel when necessary is a simple way of offering your customers new and original designs while keeping your offers in line with the panel manufacturers’ constantly changing offers. Of course if you always use the same panels you can easily change the generic panel names and characteristics to the panels you use.
2. Edges Edging is the material that we glue onto the edge of a panel to cover the ‘edge’ end grain. The Quick Design Edges Library uses only 2 types of edging: ‘0-edging/010’ and ‘0-edging/020’.

These edgings are associated with the 2 edging sub-methods, ‘0-edging 010/all-010’ and ‘0-edging/cab-010/fac020’.
By default (the sub-method ‘défaut’) the cabinets built with Quick Design have no edging.
You can add more edging and sub-methods as necessary. Just duplicate and edit the existing ones.
To apply the 0-edging material to all parts use the ‘0-edging/ all-010’ style.

To apply ‘0-edging 01’ to the carcass parts and ‘0-edging 02‘ to the façade use the ‘0-edging/cab-010/fac-020’ style. As with the panels just change the ‘0-edging 010’ or ‘...020’ edging material to change the aspect of your project. Have a look at the Using Quick Design Edging video.

As projects rarely have lots of different types of edging, it might be OK just knowing that the Quick Design Edging 01,02,03, etc corresponds to a specific material for each project. To have a specific reference display in the cutting lists, add the reference to the edging name or duplicate an existing method and change the edging name.

3. Bars Bars are the material that you can use to build framed panels. Here is a cabinet with a frame and panel door:

Bars materials have a specific section and are sold in lengths. Quick Design Bars work in a similar way to edging. If you make a framed panel you can quickly change the width and thickness of all the frames simply by changing the width and thickness of the generic Quick Design Bars.

Bar materials are associated with the ‘Assembled Pieces’ submethods library and the ‘Panel Structures’ library.
The ‘Assembled Structures’ sub-method will apply globally a defined structure to a cabinet.
These libraries are essentially used to build cabinets with a frame and panel structure, but they can also be used for a lot of other designs that need to assemble panels and bar materials.
The sub-method allows you to define a specific material for the frame and an independent material for the upper rail (or cross bar).

However Polyboard also has a separate ‘Panels Structure’ library. Adding parts to this library is done by editing and creating structures in the Properties menu.

Editing Assembled parts using the properties menu has more options than using the ‘Assembled Pieces’ sub-method and it is possible to define separate materials for each individual part of a framed panel. The Quick Design Bars libraries are set up with 3 Quick Design Bars. We suggest that the 3 bar types be used as follows: 1. ‘0-bar/010’ for general framing. 2. ‘0-bar/010’ and ‘0-bar/020’ when separate types are needed for uprights (styles) and cross bars (rails). For example if you need the rails wider than the styles. 3. ‘0-bar/030’ reserved for drawer fronts. Note that unlike the other materials, the Bars Materials library has a ‘Quality’ field. You can use both the Description and Quality field to add a materials reference without having to modify the materials name.
The Bars Materials library works with the following ‘Assembles Pieces’ Sub-Methods: ●● ‘0-frame/all-010’ will create all frames with ‘0-bar/010’ material. ●● ‘0-frame/all-010/ucb-020’ will create the uprights and lower rails in ‘0-bar 01’ and the upper cross bar in ‘0-bar/02’. We have added a curve to the cross bar as a default example but of course you can change as necessary. ●● ‘0-frame/all-03’ will create all frames in ‘0-bar 030’. We suggest you use this specifically for drawer fronts. ●● ‘0-frame/all-010/draw-030/op-020” will build doors in 0-bar 010, drawers in 0-bar 030 and other panels in 0-bar 020. As with all sub-methods, applying to a cabinet will change all assembled panels. Use the ‘Panel Structures’ library to apply different structures to the individual parts. See the Using Quick Design Bars video for more information.

4. Panel Structures This library enables you to stock predefined frame and panel structures and apply them to a panel. The library cannot be modified directly. There is no ‘+’ button in the dialogue box and editing the library is done using the ‘Properties’ menu. To add structures to the library use the Properties > Structure > Assembly menu.
In the Structures menu: ●● Use the ‘Assembly’ option to edit the default assembly method ●● Use the ‘Add Structure’ option to add the edited structure to the ‘Panel Structures’ library. ●● Use the ‘Apply Library Structure’ option to apply a structure already stocked in the library to your selected panel. We have added 3 structures to the library that work with the Quick Design Bars materials library. Unlike using a sub-method, applying the library element to a panel only changes one panel at a time. To apply the same structure to another panel use the ‘copy/ paste’ commands. Note: you can not apply a structure if a panel already has a structure applied.

You must use the ‘delete structure’ command to delete the existing structure first. ●● ‘0-frame/all-01’ will make all the frame using ‘0-bar 01’. This is the same as if you are using the ‘0-frame all-01’ sub-method, except that the structure will be applied only to the selected panel and not the whole cabinet. ●● ‘0-frame/all-010/ucb-02’ will make all the frames with styles (uprights) and rails (cross bars) in ‘0-bar 01’ except the upper rail in ‘0-bar 02’. ●● ‘0-frame/all-03’ will make all the frame in ‘0-bar 03’. ●● ‘0-frame/ur-01/cb-02’ will make the uprights in ‘0-bar 01’ and the cross bars in ‘0-bar 02’. Of course you can edit the styles and add your own as needed. Note that all the standard quick Design frames use a 30x8mm mortise and tenon with the ‘140 framed panels’ material grooved 10mm into the frame. Note also that it’s best to set up the final Materials Style before adding the framed panels. Changing the style after can create some strange effects.

5. Other Quick Design Panels Structures The structures 0-rail/010/x2 …..0-sty/010/x3 create panels with rails (horizontal bars) and styles (vertical bars). These methods set up a number of vertical or horizontal bars. The code used is the following: 0-rail/010/x3 Where: ●● 0-rail = horizontal or vertical (styles) bars ●● /010 = the Quick Design material used ●● /x2 = the number of bars And eventually if a panel material is used ●● /l-100 = the width of the bars. You can use these methods to build panels that are made of several cross pieces. A common use is to make a kitchen base cabinet with 2 cross pieces replacing the top.

a. Fixed dimension hardware These elements are set up as specified by the hardware manufacturer. Note that one Polyboard hardware fitting can be composed of several hardware elements. b. Variable Quick Design hardware fittings Fittings that are named 0-name/000 in the hardware list are Quick Design hardware fittings. These fittings can be used like the Quick Design materials and are meant to have variable characteristics. Like the Quick Design materials it’s possible to apply a fitting and then change its definition to update all the instances of the fitting throughout a specific piece of furniture or project. For instance if you set up a 0-dow/001 that places an 8mm dowel fitting on all the cabinets in a project, changing the 0-dow/001 diameter to 6mm will change all the dowels of your project to 6mm. These elements can be used with Quick Design Rules (see the Rules library section for more details).

Manufacturing Methods Libraries A Manufacturing Method is only an assembly of a series of Sub-Methods. This library contains 2 types of Methods, the standard Methods that use normal Fitting Links sub-methods and the Quick Design Methods that use the Quick Design Fitting Links.

2. Materials Style This sub-method library will tell Polyboard in what materials to build your project. The Materials Style Sub-method work in conjunction with the Materials libraries. The Default (Défaut in French) method will set your projects using the Quick Design materials, using one material by panel. This will make it easier to change the aspect of each different part of your project. This is fine if you are using an approved supplier, but if you want to build your project yourself, you need to apply a Materials Sub-method that will give a coherent cutting list. To create a coherent cutting list change the default method to a method that groups the materials by structure. The naming convention we use is the following: ‘mela/car-19/int-16/bac-08/fac-egger 0190’ ●● mela : main material ●● //car : grouped part’s name car= carcass, int=inside of drawer boxes, bac=backs and bottoms, fac=facade elements ●● -19/ : thickness of preceeding element

4. Divisions The Divisions Sub-Method contains a list of methods that define the set back (or overlap) of the internal panels relative to the other panels. In general this will concern the shelves and eventually uprights relative to the façade. Note that the façade refers to 2 conditions: An open façade with no façade component or a closed façade with a panel closing it (usually a door). The default method will set all components flush with the façade, not so good if you have a mobile shelf behind a door.
