How To Erect A Bazi Manually Without A Calendar Au Ann San September 2008 Introduction

The traditional way to erect a bazi is to use a ten-thousand-year calendar (万年历) or Hsia calendar (夏历), which are used in Chinese Metaphysics. Ten-thousand-year calendars are usually very bulky books that people do not wish to carry around. If you need to erect a bazi but do not have a ten-thousand-year calendar with you, what do you do? In this paper I will show a method to erect the different pillars in a bazi manually without using a calendar. Erection of a bazi always starts from the year pillar, then the month pillar, the day pillar and last but not least, the hour pillar. 2.

Erection Of The Year Pillar

Erection of the year pillar is separated into 2 parts: one for the stem and the other for the branch. It should be noted that the year of birth is based on the 夏历. A new year in this calendar starts on the first day of spring or li chun (立春), which falls on the 3rd, 4th or 5th of February every year. Please refer to Table 7 in Appendix I to determine the starting day and time of a year. 2.1

Erection Of The Year Stem

To erect the year stem, take the last digit of the year of birth and follow these steps: 1. If the last digit is 4 or more deduct 3 from the number. 2. If the last digit is less than 4, add 7 to it. 3. Use the result in either steps 1 or 2 to read the year stem from Table 1. 1 甲

Example 1: A person born in the year 2007 (fire pig) (assuming he/she is born after 立春) Last digit of year of birth: 7 Since 7 is larger than 4, deduct 3 from the last digit: 7 – 3 = 4 Using Table 1, the year stem is 丁. Erection Of The Year Branch

To erect the year branch, take the last 2 digits of the year of birth and follow these steps: 1. If the year of birth is before 2000, add 1 to the last 2 digits.

2. If the year of birth is 2000 or later, add 5 to the last 2 digits. 3. Divide the above result by 12 and use the remainder to read the year branch from Table 2. 4. If the remainder is 0, use 12 to read the year branch from Table 2. 1 子

The Year Pillar

With the results of the above two sections, combine them to form the year pillar. However, it should be noted that the stem and branch should be of the same gender. If one is yang while the other is yin, there is a calculation error. In such a case, go back to Sections 2.1 and 2.2 and recalculate the stem and branch. Example 5: A person born in the year 2007 (fire pig) (assuming he/she is born after 立春) Result from Example 1: 丁 (yin) Result from Example 3: 亥 (yin) Therefore the year pillar for 2007 is 丁亥 (fire pig). Example 6: A person born in the year 1960 (metal rat) (assuming he/she is born after 立春) Result from Example 2: 庚 (yang) Result from Example 4: 子 (yang) Therefore the year pillar for 1960 is 庚子 (metal rat). If you do not wish to calculate the year pillar using the above method, you can use Table 7 in Appendix I to obtain the year pillar.

Erection Of The Month Pillar

Once you know the year pillar, you will need to use Table 3 to find out the month branch. If the date of birth is around the approximate starting date of the month, you will need to use Table 8 in Appendix II to determine the actual month branch. Table 8 shows the twelve months and their starting dates and times for the years 1922 to 2024. After you have established the month branch, use Table 4 to obtain the month pillar. The method used to erect Table 4 and thus the month pillar is called five-tiger derivation (五虎遁), so called because the table is built by first deriving the first row of the five tigers (寅). 3.1

How to Erect Table 4

The method to erect Table 4 is called the five tiger derivation because the stems of the first row with the 5 tigers (寅) is erected first, then the stems in the other rows are filled in sequence. The table is erected as follows: 1. List the year stems in the header row in pairs using the five combinations, i.e., 甲 and 己 (earth); 乙 and 庚 (metal); 丙 and 辛 (water); 丁 and 壬 (wood); and 戊 and 癸 (fire). 2. Indicate the results of the combinations above the stem pairs. 3. List the 12 branches on the left column in ascending order, starting from the tiger month (寅). 4. Derive the stems for the first row (寅 month) using the productive cycle (相生). For example, 甲 combines with 己 to form earth. The element that produces earth is fire. Since 寅 is yang, the stem must be yang fire, which is 丙火. Therefore the month pillar for a year stem for either 甲 or 己 is 丙寅. 5. To complete the stems for the other months, just fill in the stems in sequence downwards in ascending order. 3.2

How to Use Table 4

Using the year stem (column) and the month of birth (row), read the month pillar where they intersect. For example, a person born in 1959, the year of the earth pig, 己 亥, in the month of 未: look down the column of the 甲己 combination until the 未 row. His month pillar is 辛未. 4.

Erection Of The Day Pillar

Amongst the four pillars, the day pillar is the most difficult to erect manually because each month has a different number of days and some years have 366 days (leap years) instead of 365. To erect the day pillar use the following steps: 1. For any day in the years 1901 to 1999, use the last 2 digits of the year. 2. For any day in the year 2000 and later, take the last 2 digits of the year and add 100. 3. Divide the number from steps 1 or 2 by 12 to find the remainder. 4. Multiply the remainder from step 3 by 5. 5. Divide the number from steps 1 or 2 by 4 and round up to the nearest number. 6. Calculate the number of days the date of birth is from the 1st of January of the year of birth. Table 5 can be used to assist in this calculation. 7. Add up the results from steps 4, 5 and 6 and add 9 to the result. 8. Divide the result from step 7 by 60 and find the remainder. 9. If the remainder is larger than 10, take away the tenth digit. 10. If the result from step 9 is 0, use 10. 11. With the result from step 9 or 10, use Table 1 to find the day stem. 12. Divide the result from step 8 by 12 to find the remainder. 13. If the remainder is 0, use 12. 14. With the result from step 12 or 13, use Table 2 to find the day branch. 15. Make sure the stem and branch are of the same gender. If one is yin while the other is yang, go back to step 1 and recalculate. 4

When calculating step 6, please note that there are 29 days in February in a leap year. The leap years are: 1904, 1908, 1912, 1916, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 2028, 2032, 2036 and 2040. Example 7: A person born on 20 March 2007 Since 2007 is after 2000, we need to take the last 2 digits of the year and add 100. Step 2: Take the last 2 digits of the year and add 100: 07 + 100 = 107 Step 3: Divide the number by 12: 107 / 12 = 8 remainder 11 Step 4: Multiply remainder by 5: 11 x 5 = 55 Step 5: Divide number from step 2 by 4 and round up: 107 / 4 ≈ 27 Step 6: Number of days from 1st January: 59 + 20 = 79 Step 7: Add results in steps 4, 5 & 6 and add 9: 55 + 27 + 79 + 9 = 170 Step 8: Divide result from step 7 by 60: 170 / 60 = 2 remainder 50 Step 9: If the remainder is larger than 10, take away tenth digit: 0 Step 10: If result from step 9 is 0, use 10 Step 11: With result from step 10, use Table 1 to find the day stem: 癸 (yin) Step 12: Divide result from step 8 by 12: 50 / 12 = 4 remainder 2 Step 14: With the remainder from step 12, use Table 2 to find the day branch: 丑 (yin) The day pillar for this person is 癸丑. Example 8: A person born on 28 October 1960 Since 1960 is before 2000, we just need to use the last 2 digits of the year. Step 1: Take the last 2 digits of the year: 60 Step 3: Divide the number by 12: 60 / 12 = 5 remainder 0 Step 4: Multiply remainder by 5: 0 x 5 = 0 Step 5: Divide number from step 1 by 4 and round up: 60 / 4 = 15 Step 6: Number of days from 1st January: 274 + 28 = 302 Step 7: Add results in steps 4, 5 & 6 and add 9: 0 + 15 + 302 + 9 = 326 Step 8: Divide result from step 7 by 60: 326 / 60 = 6 remainder 26 Step 9: If the remainder is larger than 10, take away tenth digit: 6 Step 11: With result from step 9, use Table 1 to find the day stem: 己 (yin) Step 12: Divide result from step 8 by 12: 26 / 12 = 2 remainder 2 Step 14: With the remainder from step 12, use Table 2 to find the day branch: 丑 (yin) The day pillar for this person is 己丑.

How to Erect Table 6

1. List the year stems in the header row in pairs using the five combinations, i.e., 甲 and 己 (earth); 乙 and 庚 (metal); 丙 and 辛 (water); 丁 and 壬 (wood); and 戊 and 癸 (fire). 2. Indicate the results of the combination above the stem pairs. 3. List the 12 branches on the left column in ascending order, starting from the rat hour (子). 4. Derive the stems for the first row (子 hour) using the controlling cycle (相克). For example, 甲 combines with 己 to form earth. The element that controls earth is wood. Since 子 is yang, the stem has to be yang wood, which is 甲木. Therefore the hour pillar for a day stem of either 甲 or 己 is 甲子. 5. To complete the stems for the other hours, just fill in the stems in sequence downwards in ascending order. 5.2

How to Use Table 6

With the day stem (column) and the hour of birth (row), read the hour pillar at the intersection. For example, a person with a 辛 day master, born at 12 noon (午时), look down the column of the 丙辛 combination until the 午 row. His hour pillar is 甲

午. It should be noted that the morning rat and night rat theory applies here too. For a person born between 12 midnight and 1 o’clock in the morning (morning rat), the reading of Table 6 is normal as shown above. However, for a person born between 11 o’clock at night to 12 midnight (night rat), the next stem should be used to read off the hour stem from Table 6. For example, a person born at 2305 hours with a 己 day master, should use 庚 (the next stem) to read off the hour pillar from Table 6, giving 丙子 and not 甲子 (if 己 is used). However, the day master for his/her chart should still remain as 己 and not changed to 庚. 6.

Five-dragon Derivation 五龙遁

There is an easier to erect Tables 4 and 6. It is called the five-dragon derivation (五龙 遁), so called because the table is built by first deriving the row of five dragons (辰). For Table 4, the dragon (辰) row is the 3rd row whereas for Table 6, the dragon (辰) row is the 5th row. After completing the first 3 steps in sections 3.1 and 5.1 for Tables 4 and 6 respectively, derive the stems for the dragon (辰) row using the same element as the results of the five combinations. For example, 甲 combines with 己 to form earth. Since 辰 is yang, the stem has to be yang earth, which is 戊土. Therefore the pillar for either 甲 or 己 is 戊辰 (for both Tables 4 and 6). After completing the 辰 row, fill in the stems for the rest of the rows in sequence, with those above the 辰 row in descending order and those below in ascending order. 7.

Examples of Erection of Bazi

In order to familarise ourselves with the above method to erect bazi manually, two complete examples will be shown. 7.1

Example 9

A person born on 26 May 1969 at 1520 hours. To erect the year stem: Last digit of year of birth: 9 Since 7 is larger than 4, deduct 3 from last digit: 9 – 3 = 6 Using Table 1, the year stem is 己 (yin). To erect the year branch: Last 2 digits of year of birth: 69 Since 1969 is before 2000, add 1 to last 2 digits: 69 + 1 = 70 Divide the above result by 12: 5 remainder 10 With the remainder and using Table 2, the year stem is 酉 (yin). The year pillar is 己酉. The date 26th of May is within the month of 巳 (Table 8 in Appendix II). With the year stem of 己 and the month 巳 and using Table 4, the month pillar is 己巳.

The year pillar is 壬午. The date 18th of June is within the month of 午 (Table 8 in Appendix II). With the year stem of 壬 and the month 午 and using Table 4, the month pillar is 丙午. How to use the Table 8 to find the month branch: 1. Find the year of birth in column 1. 2. Look for the column with a starting date near the date of birth. If the date of birth is after the starting date for that month and before the starting date for the next month, use that as the month branch. 3. If the birth date is on the starting date and the date of birth is AT or AFTER the starting time, use that month as the month branch. If the birth time is BEFORE the starting time, use the month before as the month branch. For example, a person born on 7 July 2000 at 0400 hours, from Table 8, for the year 2000, the 未 month starts on 7 July 2000 at 0404 hours. Since this person’s birth time is before the starting time for the 未 month, his/her month branch should be 午.
