`Phillip Johnson` American hotspot architect of 1950’s

Life and history 

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. On 8 th July, 1906.  He graduated in philology from Harvard University in 1930.  He studied architecture at Harvard from 1940 till 1943, with Walter Gropius. He practiced architecture in Cambridge till 1946.  He worked with Richard Foster from 1964 till 1967.  He also worked with John Burgee from 1967 until his retirement.  He collaborated with Mies Vander Rohe for the most superb skyscraper in North-America-the Seagram building in New York, in 1958.

He built the house for himself. It is placed in the centre of complex designed by himself. Complex consists of two structures: - Virtual glass house - Brick guest house It is a rectangle of 56’0” X 32’0” House is plated on ground. It is framed with massive steel columns and beams. One of the low walnut cabinets contain kitchen equipments.  The red brick floor and cylindrical tower are waxed to bring out a cold purple overtone.  The steel is painted grey,steps and railing are of white granite.  It is one of the world’s most beautiful yet least functional houses.  It was never envisioned as a home to live-in but a lifestyle stage to live with.  In the interior, the carpet in the living room gives a strong edge definition of the horizontal plane making its field very distinct.  Space with-in the space- the cylindrical bathroom portion differ in form thethe enveloping space i.e. Approach was oblique tofrom enhance effect of perspective onathe cuboid. front facade and form of a building.  This is done to strengthen its image as a free standing volume and to create contrast to indicate a functional difference. 

The architect is philip johnson.  It is located in maddison avenue new york.  It was built in 1985.  It is a commercial office tower. 

About the building.

It was one of the major works of philip johnson’s life. It is highly ornamented building. It is now called – sony building. It is a 37 storied tower covering a space of 36,800 square Feet. 13,000 tonnes of granite is used in this building. In this building bottom is inspired by renaissance and top is inspired by chippendale architecture.

 It

has black and white marble patterns.  It consist of main archway at the entrance.  Exterior walls and arcade at the base are lined In pink granite.  It consists of many multistoried openings to allow light.  Super scale archway points visitors into a public lobby on the ground floor.  The recessed archway entrance is in monumental scale.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM  

IT IS LOCATED AT THE SOUTH END OF A PROPOSED PARK SYSTEM AND CULTURAL COMPLEX . IT HAS PROGRAMME FOR 1,08,000 meter square OF FACILITIES.

PHILOSOPHY   

HE USED STYLISTICALLY VARIED WORK. HE USED GEOMETRICAL SHAPES LIKE vivid void STRUCTURES. HIS STYLE WAS -FLAT ROOF -ASYMMETRY

DECONSTRUCTIVIST ARCHITECTURE         

THERE is CLARITY IN FORM,GOOD ACCESIBILITY,AND MONUMENTALITY. EASE OF ORIENTATION WAS PRIME CONCERN. There is EFFORTLESS TRANSITION FROM STORAGE TO EXHIBIT ROOM. There is EASE OF ACCESS TO TOILETS RESTAURANT, SHOPS , THEATRE etc. ACCESS FROM NORTH AND SOUTH are OUTSIDE CONTROL POINTS. CEREMONICAL SOUTH ENTRANCE IS ON UPPER LEVEL. MAIN ENTRANCE is the HIGHEST Element and is on MONUMENTAL SCALE. EXHIBITION AREAS were DIVIDED INTO 12 SEPARATE ‘PODS’ EACH ‘POD’ WAS SUBDIVIDED INTO SMALL GROUPINGS AROUND THE OUTSIDE AND GREAT CENTRED GALLERY.

EXTERIOR IS A GROUPING OF LARGE AND MEDIUM SIZED ELLIPTICAL OVOID STRUCTURES CONNECTED AT LOWER LEVEL BY MEANDERING WALL. SHOPS,RESTAURANTS,AND TOILETS WERE NEAR EXHIBIT ROOMS. PATHWAY FROM FRONT DOOR WAS NEARLY STRAIGHT TO FACILITATE ORIENTATION OF EACH ‘POD’. WALL SURFACES WERE CLADED IN KOREAN GRANITE. ITS LOBBY HAS A HEIGHT OF 37METRE WHICH IS EQUALANT TO ‘PANTHEON’. EACH GALLERY IS A TWO-STORIED ELLIPTICAL VOLUME.

ABOUT THE BUILDING   

IT IS SITUATED ON 3.2 HECTARE SITE OF RECLAIMED LAND AT THE EDGE OF THE BAY ON “MARINE DRIVE” IT CONSISTED PRIMARILY OF A 1,040 SEATS THEATRE. LATER ADDITION2,000 SEAT CONCERT HALL 200 SEAT EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE SCHOOL STUDENT’S RESIDENCE HALL LIBRARY OFFICE TOWER MUSEUM

 THEATRE

IS DESIGNED “FAN SHAPED” SO AS TO KEEP THE LAST ROW OF SEATS CLOSE TO THE STAGE.

 THIS

ENABLES ONE TO APPRECIATE THE SUBTLE MOVEMENTS OF THE EYES AND THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS IN ESPECIALLY,CLASSICAL INDIAN DANCING AND TO PARTICIPATE VISUALLY IN THE PERFORMANCE.  A REVOLVING STAGE HAS BEEN PROVIDED FOR CHANGE OF SETS IN A DRAMA PERFORMANCE.  TWO ACCESS OF THE THEATRE: FROM THE MARINE DRIVE  FROM AN INTEGRAL ROAD.  FOYER IS OVER 91M LONG,RUNNING DIAGONALLY ACROSS ONE CORNER OF THE PLOT.  INTERIORS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED SPECIALLY TO MEET THE SPECIFIC ACOUSTIC REQUIREMENTS OF INDIAN CLASSICAL AND FOLK DANCES.

SEATING CAPACITY—1010. INDIA’S AS WELL AS WORLD’S FIRST NATIONAL THEATRE. AUDIENCE SITS AROUND THE MUSICIAN ON THREE SIDES. STAGE IS ALMOST SEMI-CIRCULAR IN SHAPE. AUDITORIUM IS IN THE SHAPE OF A FAN,SO IY HAS 5 EQUAL SEGMENTS EACH OF 208 SEATS. ROTATABLE STAGE THEATRE IS ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED ROTATION—180* ROTATION TIME—80 SEC. THE THREE SIDED FORMS,OVERHEAD AND ON THE WALLS,PLACED ALTERNATIVELY CONVEX & CONCAVE ENSURES EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF SOUND OVER THE WHOLE AUDITORIUM. ENTIRE STRUCTURE ACTUALLY CONSISTS OF 3 BUILDINGS WITH SEPARATE PILE FOUNDATION,DOWN TO THE ROCK BASE,EEFECTIVELY BLOCKING OUT STRUTURE BORNE SOUNDS SUCH AS THE NOISE FROM A ROAD DRILL.

STAGEHARDWOOD TIMBER FLOORING ON CONCRETE SIZE – 9m DIAMETER 17.5m WIDE AT MAXIMUM WIDTH DRESSING ROOM  ON GROUND FLOOR THERE ARE 4 SOLO ROOMS HAVING 11.6sq.m AREA EACH.  THERE IS A MEZZANINE FLOOR HAVING 2 GROUP ROOMS OF 23sq.m. EACH.  IT IS PROVIDED WITH TOILETS & DRINKING WATER FACILITIES. REHERSAL ROOMS- THERE IS ONE REHEARSAL ROOM HAVING AN AREA OF 82sq.m. IT HAS A SEATING CAPACITY FOR 200 PERSONS. PRIMARILY MEANT FOR THE CENTRE’S MASTER CLASSES CONDUCTED BY EMINENT DANCE GURUS. ALSO USED FOR SMALLER DANCE AND MUSIC RECITALS. CONFERENCES AND SEMINARS CAN ALSO BE CONDUCTED HERE.

IT HAS A SEATING CAPACITY FOR 114 PERSONS. IT IS DESIGNED TO OFFER A PLATFORM FOR YOUNG AND UPCOMING ARTISTS TO DISPLAY THEIR TALENT. IT WAS ACOUSTICALLY DESIGNED AS A RECORDING STUDIO. IT IS A MULTI-PURPOSE SPACE SUITABLE FOR HOSTING FILM SCREENINGS, MUSIC RECITALS,SEMINARS,LECTURE S AND DISCUSSIONS,PRESS CONFERENCE.ETC.
