My choice to pursue a career in management from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) stems from the potential of this course to teach me about the emerging business environment and also the varying opportunities available to a graduate of IIMB. Education is the key to shape minds and also for the holistic development of a human being. It is this quality education that I am interested in and which prompts me to pursue a course in management. Over the years, since my school days and then in college, the scope of my study has always been narrowed down; After class X, I chose Science and after that, Mathematics. The course presents before me an opportunity to broaden my scope of knowledge and use it for the betterment of society; for education is the building block of an economy which, in turn, promotes growth, both economic and social. Working with Mathodical, a magazine of the Mathematics Department, Kirori Mal College and actively participating in other events of the college affirmed my interest in learning something from everything that I did. I realized, during those years, the importance of a peer network, exposure to a competitive environment that brings out the best in us and also that an M.B.A in the future would be the best course for me; for it would help me overcome my weaknesses and fructify my strengths and it will help me to become an individual who can effectively use both judgement and perception. Preparing for the Common Admission Test in itself was a remarkable event in my life. The time that I spent with books, particularly classics, made me aware of the ocean of knowledge there is and the paucity of time that I have. I also developed a new hobby – Reading. My preparation, in this way, reaffirmed my decision to pursue a course in management As a graduate in Mathematics from the Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, I have always studied mathematics as an abstract subject, dealing with numbers, equations and sometimes graphs. An M.B.A from IIMB will help me learn about subjects such as Probability and Statistics, Linear Programming and Game Theory from a business perspective. Mathematics will prove to be a great asset to develop an understanding in subjects such as economics, finance, and accounting. An M.B.A is my chance to understand about the world of business of which I know, but very little. It is also a chance for me to financially secure my family’s future. I belong to a middle class family. My father, who is working as a Senior Manager in Cement Corporation of India, is set to retire after 4 years and I have to be employed by that time. I believe that an IIMB’s PGP will help me to a great extent. This course in management will also teach me how various businesses are organized, how do they earn and spend money. It will also teach me how to give realistic solutions that are long lasting for real life business problems. While studying, I will also develop a network that will be there whenever I need help or advice. I, as a person, will also benefit from the programme. An IIMB PGP will make me challenge my ideas every day and teach me how to work under pressure and out of my comfort zone. Such a vast pool of knowledge and opportunities is rare to come by and IIMB’s facilitative environment is a perfect place for me to acquire knowledge to stand on my feet.
I believe education at IIMB will help me to be a better decision maker and to rise at the top most decision making level of an organization from where a mathematician will deliver numbers; Numbers that will matter to many.
