For many years, tuba players have been offered a limited selection of etude books to work on sound and technique. Even though the previous books offer an excellent source for developing these musical elements in various keys and intervals, many of them lack quality musical content over a range of styles. The product development team at De Haske has created another etude book that fills this previous void. This book contains 17 fantastic "performance studies" that develop sound and technique while providing a rich environment for the study of styla. The voices of this journey in sound and style were chosen from an excellent variety or top composers. Several ot these "performance studies" I've used in concert as my unaccompanied selectionl They work great with audiences! The accompanying demo CD provides you with an interpretation of these studies. Please use this CD as just that - one interpretation, not THE interpretation. There are many 'ways to tell a story. The purest one will always be in your own voice. Please do not be intimidated by those exercises that are at tempi beyond your current ability. An investment of time (practice) will lead you toward these tempo benchmarks. This is also true of key. There is no such thing as an easy key and a difficult key. A key is either familiar or unfamiliar. If you find a particular key difficult, familiarize yourself with it. Fluency in all keys is necessary to be able to contribute fully to any musical situation in which you find yourself. A sequel to Style Studies, this Performance Studies book provides the advanced tuba player with music in a variety of styles written specifically for the tuba by modern composers! Patrick Sheridan Patrick Sheridan has been enthusiastically received as a solo artist around the world. He made his solo debut playing an arrangement of The Blue Bells of Scotland accompanied by his mother, Diana, when he was just 8 years old, only months after he had started playing his chosen instrument, the tuba! He made his solo orchestral debut at the age of 15 playing a Mozart Horn Concerto. Since then, Patrick has rocketed to success as a solo performer in venues ranging from the White House, to an NBA half-time show, to the Hollywood Bowl. As a former member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, Patrick Sheridan thrilled audiences across the United States with his amazing virtuosity and musicianship as one of the band's primary soloists. He is equally at home with standard classical repertoire and as an entertainer in the "pops" realm. In addition to his musical studies with legendary tuba artists Arnold Jacobs, Sam Pilafian, Daniel Perantoni, Harvey Phillips, and Jim Self, Mr. Sheridan holds a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in finance and marketing from the University of Michigan. Mr. Sheridan's touring schedule regularly takes him throughout the United States as well as Europe and Japan. During his tours, he has had opportunities to perform with ensembles such as the Grand Rapids Symphony, The Estonian National Orchestra, Soli Brass, The Williams Fairey Band, and the United States Army Band. Patrick is currently the Visiting Professor of Tuba at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. In addition to his busy concert schedule, Mr. Sheridan is also President of Rocky Mountain Music, a manufacturer and distributor of music products.

Vorwort Viele Jahre lang wurde Tubisten nur eine begrenzte Auswahl an EtOdenbOchern zur Verbesserung von Ton und Technik geboten. Alle bisherigen EtudenbOcher sind sicherlich eine ausgezeichnete UnterstUtzung fur die Entwicklung dieser Fertigkeiten. Viele EtOden in diesen Buchern Oben das Spiel in diversen Tonarten oder bestimmten Intervallen, es mangelt ihnen jedoch an qualitativ gutem musikalischen Inhalt in verschiedenen Stilarten. Die Produktentwicklung des De Haske-Verlags hat hiermit ein weiteres Such zur SchlieBung dieser LOcke geschaffen. Dieses Such enthalt siebzehn fantastische Spielstucke zur Entwicklung von Ton und Technik, die zugleich ein weites Feld fUr Stilstudien bieten. Die Musik dieser Klang- und Stilreise wurde von hervorragenden Komponisten geschrieben. Einige dieser EtUden habe ich bereits in Konzerten als unbegleitete Soli zum Sesten gegeben. Sie kamen sehr gut beim Pulikum an! Auf der Begleit-CD ist eine Interpretation dieser EtUden zu horen. Die CD sollte auch nur als eine und nicht als die Interpretation betrachtet werden. Es gibt immer verschiedene Arten, eine Geschichte zu erzahlen. So wird auch jeder die richtige Spielweise fUr sich selbst finden. Es sollte si ch niemand von Obungen in Tempi abschrecken lassen, die er gegenwartig nicht meistern kann. Mit etwas Zeit- (und Obungs-) Aufwand sind diese Grenzen bald uberwunden. Das Gleiche gilt auch fUr die Tonarten. Es gibt grundsatzlich keine leichten oder schweren Tonarten. Eine Tonart ist entweder bekannt oder unbekannt. Fallt eine Tonart besonders schwer, so muss man sich nur damit vertraut machen. Wer sich in jeder musikalischen Lage gut zurecht finden will, muss flOssig in alien Tonarten spiel en konnen. Als Fortsetzung von Style Studies stattet Performance Studies den fortgeschrittenen Tubisten mit Musik in einer Vielzahl an Stilen aus, die von modernen Komponisten speziell fUr die Tuba geschrieben wurde! Ich mochte dem gesamten Team beim De Haske-Verlag fUr ihr Engagement zur Forderung des Tubaspiels danken. Ein groBes Dankeschon geht auch an alle Komponisten fUr ihre groBzUgigen Beitrage zu dieser Sammlung! Patrick Sheridan Patrick Sheridan ist ein weltweit begeistert gefeierter SolokOnstler. Sein Solo-Debut absolvierte er im Alter von acht Jahren, als er gerade erst mit dem Unterricht in seinem Lieblingsinstrument, der Tuba, begonnen hatte! Damals spielte er eine Bearbeitung von The Blue Bells of Scot/and, begleitet von seiner Mutter Diana. Sein Orchester-Debut gab er im Alter von fUnfzehn Jahren mit dem Hornkonzert von Mozart. Seitdem nahm er einen kometenhaften Aufstieg zu einem erfolgreichen Solisten, der bereits im WeiBen Haus, in einer Halbzeit-Show der amerikanischen Basketball-Bundesliga NBA, od er auch im Hollywood Bowl, einem der groBten Amphitheater der Welt, gespielt hat. Als fruheres Mitglied und einer der ersten Solisten des U.S.-Marineorchesters 'The President's Own' betorte Patrick Sheridan mit seiner erstaunlichen Virtuositat und Musikalitat das Publikum in ganz Amerika. Er ist im klassischen Standardrepertoire ebenso zu Hause wie als Entertainer in den Gefilden der Popmusik.
