HEMATOLOGY 1B: BLOOD COMPONENT THERAPY I.

Definition of Terms A. Blood Component  A constituent of blood separated from whole blood B. Blood Component Therapy  The process of transfusing only the portion of the blood needed by the patient.  Allows a single unit of donated blood to benefit more than one patient.

Remember: a. Single donated blood is up to 450 ml, if this undergoes centrifugation, it will yield packed red cell cells and platelet-rich plasma b. The platelet rich plasma is further centrifugated. This will yield platelet concentrates and plasma o c. The packed red blood cells is kept in the blood bank refrigerator at 4-8 C d. The platelet concentrate is stored at room temperature with frequent continuous agitation to prevent blood clot e. Plasma can be kept in the freezer as fresh frozen plasma, or it could still be centrifuged to yield your cryoprecipitate and cryosupernate

II.

Blood Components Available in the Philippines A. B. C. D.

RBC (Whole blood, PRBC, Washed RBC, Leuko-depleted RC) Fresh Frozen Plasma Cryoprecipitate Cryosupernate – being disposed in other countries, but is still being used in the Philippines, particularly in hemophilia B patients E. Platelets – Random Donor Platelets (RDP) or Apheresed (Single Donor Platelet)
