Effect: A diary is shown to contain the names of playing cards on all 365(6) days of the year. The diary is handed to a spectator who then names, freely, any date in the year. A borrowed (regular) deck is shuffled and the spectator is asked to choose a card. For the finale, the spectator opens the diary on her chosen date and the name of the card written in the diary matches the chosen card! You will need a yearly diary. I suggest you try to find a year less diary. This trick uses the Bart Harding stack; the stack is used here for the diary not the cards... any deck can be used here. Fill in your diary as follows... starting with January the first, add the month to the day and write in your diary the corresponding card. E.g. January 1st is 1+1 = 2. The entry for two is seven of hearts. June 21st is 6+21 = 27. The entry for 27 is Ace of spades. This should take around an hour to complete all 366 entries including a leap year. Not much preparation for a miracle that will last a lifetime. To calculate the card at any given date, follow these simple instructions. Mentally picture a new deck order, a deck in ace to king order of the four suits, i.e., A-KC (cards 1-13), A-KH (cards 14-26),A-KS (cards 27-39) and A-KD (cards 40-52). This should be easy to picture as they are in CHaSeD order. If March 9th is called by the spectator, your small calculation goes like this; 3 (march is the third month) +9 = 12. Now reverse 12 to reach 21, visualize the card at position 21 in new deck order. This card is the 8H - This calculation is easy because you know card 21 is in the second bank of cards Hearts. You also know that bank 2 starts on card 14. Therefore the 21st card is eight cards away in the hearts bank, the Eight of hearts! But, what if your reversing calculation exceeds 52, e.g. the spectator picks April 14th? 4+14 = 18. And 18 reversed becomes 81! Simple you subtract 5 from the first digit and add 5 to the second digit. So, 81 becomes 36, (8-5 = 3 and 1+5 = 6). The 36th card in your new deck order is 7D. PERFORMANCE: When the spectator names their chosen date, have them shuffle the deck. While they are shuffling calculate the card at that date. All you have to do now is force that card on your spectator. My preferred way is to spread the cards face up in your hands showing the spectator how well they have shuffled and mixed them.
