Day 1 The Discipline of Yoga - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 1 (Day 1) - December 26' 1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) " " means rules which society puts on you and " " are rules which you put on yourself. Why Yoga is called a Discipline? Why the need for discipline arise? 2) When it comes to question of enjoyment no discipline is necessary. You don't say I am drinking water because it is discipline. You are drinking because you enjoy quenching thirst. 3) Discipline is required when there is something not charming to begin :) 4) When you are abiding in yourself then you are already in yourself there is no discipline there, but when that is not so; the mind is wagging its tail all the time then discipline is essential so that it could come back to its self. The fruit of which is eventually blissful. 5) The pleasure which comes after a certain discipline is really a

(long lasting) pleasure.

6) Discipline is not torturing you. Purpose of discipline is to attain joy. 7) The uncomfortableness which is bearable is called discipline. 8) Thus Rishi Patanjali says "NOW. I will initiate you into Yoga". WHEN? When your mind is not settled. THEN…. 9) The rules such as brushing teeth - bathing everyday - wearing good dress were imposed on you when you were kid, but then eventually that discipline which was uncomfortable turned out to be a blissful and now a part of life. 10) When you see villagers or children watching movie they are so totally all in the movie, nobody exist just the movie is existing that moment. If you simply sit you may feel pain in legs, backache but if you are engaged in watching a movie then you doesn’t feel any pain even you don't feel your body. What happens that time? Your consciousness assumed that firm. 11) Whole purpose of yoga is to bring integrity in you to make you COMPLETE. 12) Abiding in the nature of the seer is the Yoga.

13) Whenever you experience joy, ecstasy, happiness in life, knowingly or unknowingly you are abiding in a firm or the nature of seer otherwise in other time you are with different activities of mind. 14) There are five kinds of impression of mind 1) (Proof) - Your mind is engaged in wanting proof all the time. (Three types of proofs) * * *

(Obvious) - Our mind constantly want to have obvious solid experiential proof. (Guessing) - Whatever u guess you believe in it. (Scriptures) - Because it is written in so and so book believing in it.

2) (Incorrect Understanding) - You have inferiority complex and you see suddenly arrogant behavior of someone acting on you. They are not arrogant in real. You have not been respected because you don't respect yourself enough. This tendency of your mind is . Someone’s actions and behavior cannot be a proof of love. One can act very well in love without living it. For example the actors and actress in movie screen doing romance is just a show up need not to be real.

3) (Hallucination) - Nothing such thing exist but people sit and imagine. Unfounded baseless mere thoughts which do not carry much meaning are called “Vikalpa” or Fantasies. (Two types of fantasies) * Joyful fantasies - I like this or I like that. * Fearful fantasies - What happen if I die tomorrow?

4) 5)

(Sleep) - If the mind is not in above three states then it goes to Sleep (Remembering) - Remembering past experiences is called

.

15) When you are awake are you in any of these 4 states of modulations? If yes, then that is not meditation. That is not Yoga. 16) How to get rid of such overpowering practice/detachment/centeredness), 17) That which you do this moment is

? Then Rishi Patanjali says through

(or

,

18) If you could relieve yourself from above five modulations and just be here NOW NOW NOW.

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

That effort is required. 19) If mind is getting into proof just observe it and relax. 20) Observing that mind is going in fantasy the fantasy will drop that moment itself. 21) Believe all experience of past though pleasant/unpleasant. 22) Just getting aware of above five

you come back into self.

Day 2 Honoring the Practice - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 2 (Day 2) - December 27' 1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) Like a wave cannot go deep into ocean similarly mind cannot go deep in you. You are not mind. Mind is superficial. You and Mind are not the same 2) Have u noticed this when you go and galloping your mind and the moment you see "ohh these all are my mind stuffs", alertness dawns and you become free. 3) NOW - The present moment - THIS VERY MOMENT is not just a point. Its infinity. 4) And "practice" is stability in that moment. That is the purpose of practice and how can that be achieved?? – “taking long time without a gap and with honor and respect then it becomes firmly establish and is achieved” 5) Body has its own requirement and time for growth similarly mind also has its own time to master something. 6) As time goes you seem to lose that attention (that honor) to kriya or meditation. For example : When you did your meditation for the first time you were so enthusiastic and energetic but as time passed you did it as "just to do it" that does not has same effect as that of first one. 7) What is honor? Honor is total attentiveness to the present moment with the tint of gratefulness 8) Respect and honor every moment of your life and your body that is called Practice. Respecting breath is called pranayama and respecting body is called asana. 9) Whenever u feel that your kriya or meditation is dull or not satisfactory to that extent it should be then know that you have not honored the time you spend for yourself. 10) like a musician will always honor his music. A good sportsman will always honor his coach. Honoring master is honoring master's words. There is a saying "If you have not honor your master your meditation will not work" Why so? Because that honor and respect brings up that consciousness that awareness in you that helps you to focus in moments so totally. 11) Is practice enough to remain on this path? No...Then Rishi Patanjali says "Vairagya" is also necessary. Then what is Vairagya - For few moments you say to yourself however beautiful the scene is "I am not interested to look at it". However melodious the music may be "I won't hear it". However beautiful it is

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

to touch something "I am not interested in feeling it". 12) Even for a few moments retrieving our senses from craving back to its source is Vairagya. This is another basic requirement for meditation. 13) Just look in to past; Have all desires you achieved satisfied you? No...It has created even more and put you in merry go round. Like a horse in merry-go-round go nowhere desires go round on and on. 14) People go on a trip to destroy their desires which again becomes A DESIRE. Understand this principle very well. 15) You examine whenever you are unhappy or miserable the reason behind that would your craving to be happy. You crave for happiness and you invite misery. 16) When you don't care for happiness you are liberated and when you even don't care for liberation you attain love this is called PARAM VAIRAGYA. 17) It does not mean you don't enjoy desires. But don't crave for it. Just offer all dreams and fantasies in fire. How long can you have them? You are going to be finish soon. You will be underneath this mud. For sure. 18) Before this earth eats you up become free from this feverishness, free from this craving. 19) look closely into every craving you have observed and remember you are going to die. 20) Sex, How much sex can u have!! Have it...Finish it...You will see there is nothing in it. Few moments your body looks as Styrofoam. All body senses have limitation but your mind wants unlimited pleasure which five senses cannot keep up. 21) Now without blaming all senses honor them and skillfully come out of it. 22) Don't run away from the world but being in the world you completely detach. 23) When aversion comes towards cravings know that you are promoting it. Whatever u resists will persist. Moving through all gunas (Sattva-Rajas-Tamas) skillfully without resisting is called Yoga. *Guruji then describes funny stories of one’s "concept on enlightenment" one after another which I cannot put in words. You can enjoy them in DVD 2 (Honoring practices)].

Day 3 Samadhi - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 3 (Day 3) - December 28'1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) Dispassion does not divide you. It connects you. It brings you in present moment and when you are 100% in every moment then you are connected too. 2) What pleasure does dispassion not give? It gives you all pleasure because you are 100% into every moment. There every moment is a peak experience. 3) The so called "Dispassion" word is wrongly understood. It does not mean to run away and renounce everything. Dispassion is something more precious more refined and more valuable in life. It is just to be 100% in this moment. [Guruji shares a beautiful story of "Emperor Alexander's visit to India" and his shift in knowledge during visit] 4) Even if the creator offers me knowledge I would say "NO" that should be the strength of dispassion. It is not arrogance to say this but it is centeredness. 5) “ ” means "equanimous" and " " means "intellect". intellect"

(Samadhi) means "equanimous

6) The identification of consciousness is divided into four stages. ** ** ** ** 7)

: For example: consider a fact that "everything is going to finish one day". This (logic) is obvious. Such logical thinking elevates your consciousness. This is first type of Samadhi.

8) : (thoughts) means experiences (smell, sight, vision, taste, sounds) as an experience when u meditate is second type of Samadhi. For example when you see a beautiful mountains and you lost completely in it is again a kind of Samadhi. This is second type of Samadhi.

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

9) : This is called "Blissful state". For example when you do kriya you are in different space of Samadhi. It is in ecstasy. This is third type of Samadhi. 10) : Fourth state of Samadhi is really deep state where you don't know where you are but you are aware of yourself. 11) How to achieve Samadhi? Then it is said such Samadhi does not comes with any effort but by resting in one’s self. By conscious relaxation you can achieve Samadhi. 12) Sleep is not Samadhi. Sleep is something like nature is forcefully imposing on you. For example when you are so tired it’s like nature is forcing you to take rest and hence you feel sleepy. It cannot be called resting. 13) If you say you are resting then it can only happen when you are in awake state (in Samadhi). 14) For some people it comes through old samskara whereas some may have to do certain practices and then they achieve. 15) Samadhi is not the property of just this level of existence. It goes into other worlds also. People who do not have body they do can get affected by meditation. When you meditate you are not just bringing a harmony within yourself but you are influencing the certain levels of creation. Your meditation influences those people who lived 100’s of years ago and even to people who will be coming in future. 16) Your life is here from thousands of centuries and will be continue for thousands of centuries. 17) Have u noticed this when you are occupied with so many thoughts in mind just sit at the riverbank and you will feel as though everything is dissolving with the flow of water. Hence when many people attempt to commit suicide in water they can't do because suddenly there happens a shift in consciousness of them. Their Prana changes immediately. 18) Again Rishi Patanjali says all these practices will suit to certain people at certain time. 19) Faith ( ) creates such a quality in consciousness. It makes your consciousness such a steady and stable. Doubt makes your consciousness vulnerable and fearful whereas faith brings totality in you. 20) Doubt destroys you and your energy. Doubt is something that pulls you all apart. Consolidation of energy is faith. 21) Doubt is a sign of weakness whereas Faith is strength. 22) When there is faith then Samadhi happens effortlessly. 23) Having valor in heart can also take you into state of meditation. Because there is sense of devotion

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

in valor. 24) Once you had peaceful experience of meditation. Memory of that Samadhi also brings you back to yourself. Just memorizing that moment can again bring you back to Samadhi. 25) Thus through deep Samadhi awareness dawns. 26) Often we give first preferences to worldly things and last preferences to spiritual things which make the spiritual progress go slow. 27) When you give your first preference to spirituality then it is even easier. Then centre focus of your life is spiritual growth and all other things falls at your feet. 28) There are also three categories of people in doing: 1) Ok, let me do it. 2) I have to do it. 3) I cannot live without doing it. It’s like three different grades where third is supreme one 29) Last but not least “Samadhi is also possible just by devotion”

Day 4 Who is God - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 4 (Day 4) - December 29'1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) Surrendering to the lord you can achieve the state of consciousness. 2) It's easy to say surrender to god but what is God? Who is God? Where is he? 3) What is lordship? What is it that rules the world? You will find it’s the LOVE that rules the world. The center core of existence rules the whole universe. Like Sun is center of solar system and it rules all planets like that the very center core of your life is ruled by love. 4) That's why Jesus said "God is love and love is God". It’s synonymous. 5) That core of consciousness which is free from suffering is love. Now what are sufferings? There are five types of sufferings ( ). ** (

) Ignorance. (When consciousness is filled with ignorance there is misery)

** ( ) Feelings of ME or I. (What people think about me? What do I take advantage from them? Why did they tell me like that? The feeling of ME or I causes misery) ** ( ) Cravings **(

) Aversions

**( ) Fear These are five sources of misery. 6) And the lord is devoid of these five miseries. That deep down consciousness in you is devoid of these miseries. 7) You may hate somebody on circumference but at the deep core of your existence there is no hatred. When these five miseries are eliminated from the circumference; God (or love) in you blossoms. There are four types of Karma: 8) First type of Karma is: When you do something good to others it brings “Karma of merit" 9) Second type of Karma is: When you do something bad to others due to which they get hurt or yell brings “Karma of de-merit" 10) Third type of Karma is: Combination of both “merits and de-merits”

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

11) Fourth type of Karma is: “Devoid of both merits and de-merits”. 12) That being which is free from ( ) misery, ( ) action, (fruit of action) and (impression of action) that special being is “Ishwara” or “Lord”. And where is this special being so called Lord? Not somewhere hanging in sky. It is in every beings heart. 13) Our inner core is untouched (Virgin). Thus Jesus was born of Virgin means "The one who is untouched from deep core of existence". 14) Worship is just an act of dissolving mind in to its being. It does not matter whom you pray whichever god you pray. 15) Thus it is said that there is no difference between "god, guru and you". It’s just matter of words. Master is nothing but just the core of your being and it is same as divine that rules this entire creation. 16) This consciousness is even "Guru" to those who came before and who will come in future. 17) Jesus says in Bible: I was before Abraham. (Same thing Krishna says) 18) Krishna says to Arjuna "I am the one who taught "ikshwaka" and "manu" (the first persons on earth)", but Arjuna gets confused he says : "How is it possible they were born thousands years ago and you are just now contemporary to me, how could you have taught them !!" Then Krishna says "Look, you do not know me. I have come so many times and you have comes so many times. You have forgotten but I know it all. I have taught then and I am teaching you now and will continue to teach in future" 19) That divine "I" consciousness will continue to guide the world. There is no breakage of time. It will come again and again. 20) For example: If you open yourself up to this highest form of your consciousness this moment all knowledge is present. What does it mean that "all knowledge is present". This means "this moment you can know or see and feel what all the beings of world are doing". 21) How many millions of people are there "some are waking up from the bad", "some are going to bed", "some are taking bath", "how many monkeys are jumping from trees to trees", "so many ants", "so many cockroaches", "so many amoebas" and "millions of viruses and bacteria’s", "many are dying", "many are hatching", "many are growing". 22) There is enormous activity happening this very moment. Among this activity you pick up any one. "Okay what so and so person or animal is doing this moment" or "What Linda is doing". It is not worth to do so but it is possible. It’s almost like you wanted to refer word and you are referring from dictionary. 23) Sometimes people ask me: "How come Guruji know the most secret of my life which no one knows".

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

I say "I don't know" :) But I know it :) 24) Knowledge and Ignorance co-exist. For example: You know you have hair on your head but you don't know how many. If you pull any one then you come to know yes that was particular hair". 25) "OM" is the primordial sound which comes very close to totality to this consciousness. Other religion too has similar sound like "Amen" in Christianity & "Amin" in Islam. But at the end it’s all one :) If you go to the topmost part of mountain you will hear humming sound "OM" as well when you go deep into ocean you hears the same sound "OM". The frequency of earth is the same as the frequency of sound generated when referring "OM". 26) When you say "OM" you remember that life which is free from misery which is all love. The unconditional love. "OM" reminds you of the lord of creation. 27) There are nine obstacles to your progress: ** = disease, illness, sickness **

= mental laziness, inefficiency, idleness, procrastination, dullness

**

= indecision, doubt

**

= carelessness, negligence

**

= sloth, languor, laziness

**

= sensuality, want of non-attachment, non-abstention, craving

**

-

**

= false views or perception, confusion of philosophies -

**

= failing to attain stages of practice = instability, slipping down, inability to maintain

28) Five signs of obstacles: ** = pain (mental or physical) **

= sadness, despair, dejection, frustration, depression, anguish

**

-

**

= inhalation, inspiration (implying irregular inhalation)

**

= shakiness, unsteadiness, movement = exhalation, expiration (implying irregular exhalation)

Day 5 Overcoming Obstacles - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 5 (Day 5) - December 30'1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) How to get rid of all nine obstacles that we talk yesterday? 2) To get rid of them just do "just keep your one pointed attention in one thing". What happens when you go on doing same thing over and over again? Boredom comes -- Restlessness comes. Both these boredom & restlessness will take you to a peak which will bring clarity and open a new horizon. This is the only way of overcoming obstacles. 3) Our mind is troubled because it is dwelling in choices (duality - two things). 4) choose any one and

means that god can be anything "guru", 'matter", "self", so whatever u like you (practice one thing) then you can overcome all these obstacles.

5) You see that one principle in everything. For example: "It’s my master present everywhere" or "it’s god present everywhere" or "it’s me present everywhere". Holding on to one principle and seeing that one principle in everything is the skill to live life. 6) In the world you live with many people not everybody is same then how to see one thing in everyone?? How is it possible? Then next sutras says:

7) Rishi Patanjali categorizes four types of people 1) Happy people 2) Unhappy people 3) Blessed people 4) Sinful people How to deal with all these categories of people? 8) Then it is said be friendly with people who are HAPPY so that you don't get jealous of them. 9) Don’t' be friendly with people who are UNHAPPY because if you do that then you will become unhappy too but be compassionate to them. 10) Appreciate the work of people who are doing good job, who are BLISSFUL.

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

11) People who are doing SINFUL job educate them and just ignore them. 12) Remember when you point others; three fingers are pointing you back and when you pull your first finger back it becomes THUMBS UP :) that is called Yoga (clap+laugh). If you follow above skills then your mind becomes peaceful and calm too. 13) Patanjali gives another option if you find above skills little bit difficult. Rishi Patanjali says - The goal can be attained through breathing exercises involving holding your breath before exhaling. 14) Many ask where Patanjali has talked about Sudarshan Kriya!! But in this one sentence there is clue. You can trace our kriya from above sutra. By this also one can become calm and one pointed. 15) Even if above two sutras (however not possible) seems to be difficult for you to follow then Patanjali gives another alternative - Through any one object of senses the mind can be still. What happens in gazing? When you do eye-gazing and then when you close your eye you mind becomes calm and stand still or we have process of having fruit as a prasadam in basic course. When you intake it with total devotion you feel complete. So through any sense you can to settle your mind. 16) - People often say "I am not smart enough" or "People don't respect me" or "Nobody cares for me" or "I am stupid - Who said so? You are even wise to one who is more stupid than you" (laugh). All these ideas are baseless. All these self imposed ideas create sufferings. Make your mind free of sadness that comes out of concepts and flame).

see your whole mind as light (as a

17) Your mind is a flame. Because of this presence of mind as a flame in you your entire body is functioning. What is flame? A flame lives on oxygen. What it does? Flame uses some matter from substance and it uses oxygen to light and what is life? It is also same. It uses oxygen and lives on some matter too. As Flame uses wick to stay similarly mind uses body to stay. Life and Light are very close. 18) or keep your mind engaged in some things continuously. Your mind is also like water. In whichever cup you put water it assumes shape of that cup. In same way in whatever thought you engage your mind it develops quality of that thought. 19) - If you think of such a person who has attained nirvana or who has gone beyond cravings. Your mind also starts attaining such qualities in you. 20) Your mind is also like air. It is all permeating. Immediately you are drawing that energy.

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

21) Try this experiment: Think of somebody who is very nasty and you will start feeling same emotions in you. Think of someone who is jealous of you and you will start feeling same sensations. Think of someone whom you love and nice feelings arises in you. 22) So putting your attention on one who has attained nirvana your mind becomes like them too. Thus Jesus said "If you has to go to my father you have to go through me" means "you have to go through master", "go through the mind of master" where everything is blossoming without any hindrance. 23) (This is very interesting).

- or through knowledge derived from nocturnal dream.

24) We sleep but we do not know what sleep is? We dream everyday and we don't know what dream is!! It's like you have millions of rupees in your hand and you don't know how to spent or you have delicious food in your plate but you don't know how to eat it and you are starving. 25) When you sleep what happens? You are letting go everything. If you are holding on to any one thing can you sleep? No. 26) All your identity disappears. There is nothing called male sleep or female sleep. A rich- man sleep or poor-man sleep, likes or dislikes. You cannot even carry anybody into your sleep no matter how much they are dear to you. 27) This is exactly is meditation where you don't do anything and you let go of everything. Knowledge of sleep leads you to Samadhi. 28) Ignorant people make a dream; reality and enlighten people see this reality a dream. 29) Five types of dreams 1) Unfulfilled desires come into dream as a fulfillment. 2) Stress release from the past experiences comes up as dream 3) Intuitive dream (what might happen in future you get intuition of that) 4) Mixture of all above four 5) The effect of place where u are sleeping A wise person would just brush up everything and don't hold on to it. 30) The moment you see everything as dream alertness dawns in you. That wake is called

.

31) The marvelous of all sutra "The knowledge of sleep awakes you" :) 32) Its so difficult to get politicians into Sadhana because their only problems is they are day dreaming and pity is they do not even know that. That dreaming is worth nothing.

33) - There are many ways of meditation. You can pick up whichever suits you and go ahead. But stick to only one thing you choose whether it is path, guru or practices.

Day 6 Steadiness & Samadhi - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 6 (Day 6) - December 31'1994 Weggis, Switzerland 1) When earth shakes for few seconds you know how much disaster happens. You are existing on this planet because earth is steady. 2) You can be at peace when nature is at peace. 3) Nature shakes once in a while but your senses are shaking everyday and when senses are shaky it is unable to behold the lord within. It disturbs the peace in. 4) Meditation can happen when there is harmony in nature and harmony in senses. 5) Senses are a bridge between OBJECTS and SELF. When senses think that more pleasure is going to come from object they shake. Even when few minutes’ senses shake they become tired and they become unable to experience the joy. 6) The same eyes which you think guide you, lights you also brings dark to you. Because it catches all sort of temptations. The greatest distraction of steadiness in self is eye. 7) Event does not tempt you that much as your eyes tempt you. 8) Samadhi is steadiness in Prana. Whenever u feel fear, anger just know that your Prana is shaky. Knowing this do not worry. Just observe it and be with it. 9) Two types of Samadhi: 1) Samadhi while doing duty (for example when a child stares a thing there is a depth in eye of a child. It indicates how steady and stable soul is) 2) Another type of Samadhi is in which you are not aware of anything but you simply know you are. 10) Your entire life reflects what you are. Your way of walk, behavior, eyes, face reflects everything in you. 11) Steadiness is the peace -- Steadiness is the strength -- Steadiness is the dispassion. 12) Before this earth gulps you, you wake up. You swallow the time. 13) Samadhi is a state where you can feel that you can stay like this for a million years.

Summary key points from discourse of Patanjali Yogasutras by H.H. Sri Sri 2011 Ravishankarji – 11 video sessions covered

14) Samadhi is secret of youthfulness, secret of bubbling enthusiasm and secret of renewal of life. 15) But we have wrong understanding of Samadhi (Very funny ideas about Samadhi) of going underground or putting ashes on body or running away to Himalayas (laugh). 16) the consciousness which holds, the objects which it holds and Senses through which it holds all the three are in harmony that is Samadhi. 17) When you compare the things and don't see the things as they are, then it is not Samadhi. For example: When you see any beautiful mountain you don't see it as just mountain. You compare it with some memories and compare that mountain with other mountain or other scenes then you miss the actual beauty. 18) 19) is steadiness.

- That which holds the sight, memories, senses is samaptti. - Then though you are engaged in activity of senses there is no feverishness. There

20) - The impression of such states will wash away all other impression of minds. It will remove all other samskaras of mind. It will renew you. 21) Whatever u did 15-20 years back if you look at it you will wonder. Am I same person who did those things ? Because new good samskaras replaces old and bad samskaras. 22) Knowledge takes you away from guilt. 23) There should be all enthusiasm to get Samadhi but with enthusiasm, patience is required. This cannot be overnight journey. People who are enthusiastic have no patience and people who have patience are lethargic. But enthusiasm and patience has to go together. It’s like you can have sleep but you cannot quickly sleep, you cannot have hurry sleep of 10 minutes. Can you? No. 24) Same with meditation. You cannot say I don't have time or I will do quick meditation. You should take middle path taking enthusiasm and patience both together.

Day 7 Kriya Yoga & Three types of Tapas - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 7 (Day 7) - January 1-2'1995 Weggis, Switzerland 1) When someone is anxious he is very aware of time of every moment passing but the whole focus is on an event rather than being on time. 2) Krishna says Arjuna: "Arjuna, You know who is intelligent and clever?" Arjuna says "No". Then Krishna says "One who sees silence in activity and activity in silence is intelligent person" 3) What is silence in activity? How can one be silent at the same time be active? This signifies sharpness, keenness. This brings skill in you. 4) Kriya Yoga is comprised into three parts ** (Tapah): Accepting without grumbling is Tapah. Keenly observing opposite values without grumbling. For example: You are traveling in plane and you have no choice but to sit in it no matter how long the distance is. You cannot say I want to get rid of journey right now in between (laugh). You have no choice but to accept it without grumbling. ** : (Observing yourself) **

: (Devotion to the divine).

5) What does all three Kriya Yoga do? Samadhi.

: They reduce the sufferings of life and raise you to

6) Willingly going through that which is not very easy is Tapas and it strengthens you. 7) Tapa means actually being "fried" or "baked" (laugh). Attaining peak level of maturity. 8) You would have seen in Kumbhmela "Sadhus" standing on one leg, putting ashes all over body and fire all around this is such a misinterpretation of (five fires). This scripture has been wrongly understood. People thought okay put all five fires around me and torture their body. This is called " (Rakshashi Tapas)". Or "Tamasik tapas". Tapas are also of three types: **Sattvik **Rajasik **Tamasik 9) People usually do "

(Rajasik Tapas)" showing off everyone. Even if they do seva there is

motive of getting back something in return. They usually show off "I am doing fasting, I am doing meditation, I am doing this - that". Such tapas turns out with "I"-ness called Rajasik Tapas 10) " (Sattvik tapas)" is such that you don't even feel you are doing. You are just a part of phenomenon there. Like world existing is phenomenon. Even in this there are three other sections **Tapas of the body **Tapas of the words **Tapas of the mind 11) Tapas of the body: Keeping physical hygiene. Keeping lethargy out. Having a control over your senses is tapas of body. 12) Tapas of the words: is speaking such words which do not harm people in wrong sense. Speaking truth and speaking pleasant truth. The moment you open your mouth you have no control over what you say. Words just shoot out of your mouth. Words can become flower or can become a knife. There is a way to tell the truth also. It can be a pleasant truth which may not harm others. If you call person stupid even if they are not stupid there is 99% of possibility that they will become stupid. Your words have power to curse or bless. Also speaking just goodie-goodie to everyone is not proper as well also speaking harsh words to everyone is not proper too. 13) Tapas of the mind: Maintaining the calmness in mind is itself Tapas. Calm and Peaceful. You can feel pleasant and excited. People who are happy create trouble to others because they are not aware to their excitement. They are not aware to what they are saying to others. The person who is calm and composes is more aware. They are sensitive to others feelings. Silent mind and not the chattering mind. 14) Normally we think our mind is in the body but it is not so. Its body inside mind. 10 times bigger than you physical body is your body of Prana (your energy aura). 10 times bigger than your Pranic body is your Mind body (thought body). 10 times bigger than Mind body is Intuitive body. And infinite times bigger than Intuitive body there is Blissful body. That's why when you feel happy you don't feel bounded you feel infinite space around you. 15) When you are unhappy in your life know that you have put your love in small channel. That is like an elephant stuck in chimney which can neither go out nor in. That is called entanglement. 16) Fire sustains life. There are five types of fire 1) (fire of body system) 2)

(fire of desire/lust)

3)

(fire of hunger/digestion)

4)

(fire of criticism)

5)

(fire of love/knowledge)

17) When life moves through all fires it comes out as complete.

18) Unfortunately we have not understood the principle. We don't even allow fire to come up. 19) : The moment fever comes and we take Paracetamol and our immune system goes down. It’s not that you don't take, but attempt to the root cause of bacteria rather than just eliminating the fire. Our body has its own air-condition system. When body sweats it cool downs the system but we have been using air-condition right from the childhood and hence no sweating happens. I have nothing against using air-condition but make sure that fresh Prana comes and your body temperature agrees with environment. You should have ability to walk in cold place without wearing too much or to be in hot place without feeling suffocated. 20) : We do not even allow this fire of passion to come up to rise up in us. The moment desire comes to us we fulfill it immediately. Then it doesn't stay in you. It doesn't burn you up. People who are very promiscuous have zero . They don't even allow fire to come up and burn them a little bit. The moment desire for sex comes they finish it there. Then does not get awakened. Sex is one of the oldest sanskaras other than eating. In all life times we have done two things for sure "Eating" & "Sex" as a cow, monkey, donkey, horse, and Ox. Passing through all these bodies these two acts where there. When this passion arises observe it in every cell of your body. It engulfs you totally so fully. It burns and it moves on, it shifts, there is hundred percent totality of alertness. If you don't allow them to come up it, just a little desire comes and you cool it down then your power or potentiality in you goes down and you become more inert. And there is no vigor, valor or joy or enthusiasm in any activity you do. People who are promiscuous have no vigor, valor or joy or enthusiasm in them. 21) : Same is with . You don't even allow hunger come. Before you feel hungry you keep stuffing things in you and stuffing and stuffing. Today people don't die of hunger they die of overeating. This is principle of Fasting. When you fast every cell of your body becomes alive. Fasting is a very good therapy. It can clean your whole system. When you are worried, unpleasant fasting can be very good for you. There is great deal of research on fasting. Just water fast or juice fast. Allow this fire to come up in you. It can purify your blood and remove toxins of your body. It can make your feelings better. In Christianity, Jainism, Islam, Hinduism all have fasting as their ritual. Because fasting touches deepest sanskaras in you which are through ages. Again there are people who keep on fasting without knowing anything. It should be done with an understanding. People who go to extremes; either people overeat or fast too much is not good for health. 22) : The fire of criticism keeps moral in you but if it goes out of control the same fire of criticism can shut down your freedom your sense of openness your sense of contentedness. If fire of criticism is too much then you are tensed and worried for nothing. Pass through the sense of fear of criticism doesn't matter so what their opinions changes. And you know to your consciousness you are not doing harm to anybody. 23) : The fire of love/knowledge can remove fire of criticism. Only in human birth can this fire be experienced. Fire of love/knowledge creates unpleasant or sense of longing in the beginning but it ends

in fullness. 24) One who has gone through the five fires have purified themselves and have crossed to the other side.

Day 8 The Eight limbs of Yoga (Vol 1) - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 8 (Day 8) - January 2'1995 Weggis, Switzerland 1) Like a seed needs proper environment - sunlight - water to sprout and blossom fully same is the case with consciousness. It may take less time or more time to blossom fully. Such sprouting of consciousness is called (Viveka). 2) Freedom comes with

.

3) All species are governed by nature - they don't have freedom nor discrimination so they never break laws of nature. Only human mind has been given freedom and hence discrimination. 4) Normally you will not find any animal over eating. But human beings have this freedom to do whatever they want. This freedom is given along with discrimination, wisdom and knowledge of consequences of action. 5) How to make this seeds of Human mind sprout? Here Patanjali says "Through Yoga, impurities get eliminated and human mind blossoms". 6) Now, What are the Limbs of Yoga? There are 8 limbs of yoga. ** (Yama) **

-: - AHINSA:+++++++++++++++++++ 8) An animal does not go into violence for no reason. Even wild animals hunt only when they are hungry. They don't go and hunt anybody for pleasure like human beings do. 9) Human beings in the name of god kill each other. Mindless violence prevailing in the world in the name of country, religion, race and what not! This is absolute non-sense. This is total lack of Viveka (wisdom). 10) When mind gets frustrated a big question mark (?) comes and then it converts into violence catching surrounding. -: - SATYA:++++++++++++++++++ 11) To be with what is right now. To be with what is not changing.

does not mean just speaking

truth. is total commitment for truth. If you are established in non-violence in very presence violence will be dropped by other creatures as well. 12) The contemporary of Buddha (Lord Mahavira). He promoted Jainism. He emphasizes more on . It is said wherever he would walk people 20KM around him would drop non-violence and story goes to that extent that even thorns would not prick anybody. 13) Any act you do would be fruitful to other when you establish in non-violence. 14) Your intention should be truthful and clear. 15) You may encounter failures but you will win in the end. -: ASTEYA:++++++++++++++++++ 16) You look at someone beautiful "ohh how nice, if I were looking like them". Then you already stealing beauty from them. This is jealousy. eliminates jealousy. 17) Your intention of stealing from others keeps you poor. Most of the time poverty is self-made. That is where the luck goes down.

-: BRAHMACHARYA:++++++++++++++++++++++ 18) is actually not just celibacy. It is to rise above body. In meditation you are in space you don't feel body of yours. Our consciousness expanded to infinite. 19) It brings lots of vigor and strength. 20) Person who thinks of sex all the time has such a dull energy that they look unattractive. They carry that sort of dull vibration around them that there is no strength - no vigor - no commitment and nobody would go around them. 21) You can see the place such as bar (lust loaded mind). You can see they have no strength at all (laugh). 22) There is story of Mulla Nasruddin (laugh). Nasruddin was watching a dance in movie, so the actress was dancing and Mulla was watching dance and suddenly Mulla went flat on the floor. Somebody asked what happened? Mulla said "I want to see dance of this lady closely" (laugh). 23) Great strength comes when

is established. You see the consciousness of Brahman.

-: APARIGRAHA:++++++++++++++++++++++ 24) When you do not accumulate then you get the knowledge of previous births. Knowledge of different species. The communication improves. 25) There is proverb in Chinese "When you scatter; everything comes to you". 26) When you give things to people it brings back to you. 27) means accepting from others and means not accepting. When you don't accept neither expect from others you get the knowledge of previous births. 28) Niyama - What are Niyamas? ** - Shaucha (internal and external purity), ** ** ** ** -:

Day 9 The Eight limbs of Yoga (Vol 2) - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 9 (Day 9) - January 3'1995 Weggis, Switzerland Contd....... 1) - What do you do when you are not acting, speaking, or thinking in the way you know you want, when not following the suggestions by the “Yamas” and “Niyamas” For example : you want to practice ahimsa, which is non-harming. But what do you do when you have a harmful or angry attitude towards somebody else? The suggestion is to go in the opposite direction, which means reminding yourself to go away from that the anger. 2) When thinking of anger or hatred, for example, it can seem that one should cultivate love, which is a good idea. However, you may have noticed how hard it is to cultivate love for one with whom you are intensely angry. The word opposite is used here to suggest that rather than going into, or getting caught up in that anger, we move away from it, in the opposite direction, which is not quite the same as saying we should cultivate love. Recall the foundation principle that consciousness wraps itself around the thought patterns in the mind field, and that this is the cause of suffering. When we unwrap our attention from those thought patterns, we rest in our true nature. This is the meaning of moving in the opposite direction; it means moving away from the entanglement of the negative. By moving away, we naturally experience the love. While the example of ahimsa (non-injury) and love were used here, the same principle applies to the other “Yamas” and “Niyamas” as well. 3) There are millions out there in world who are engaged in violent activities they don't know their acts is going to bring more misery to them. 4) No human being want to suffer but why so many people are engaged in criminal activity because they are not aware of their ignorant acts which is going to bring more misery to them 5) Cravings for certain parts of body begin in our mind because one does not totally understand the body. If you remove this skin these are all bones, flesh, nerves and nothing else. Lack of total understanding of body brings maniacs and those people cannot be satisfied by anything and they become violent. That's why world has many crimes related to sex. 6) The cleanliness establishes "Sattva" in you. The mind becomes harmonious, one-pointedness, win over self-organs, ability to realize oneself comes to you by purity. 7) There is natural thing. When you are unhappy you shut yourself from outside world and want to remain with yourself. Non-contact with anyone (even mental) else can bring certain amount of purity in

you and brings the ability to realize oneself. Makes your mind one-pointed and bring clarity in thinking. That's why great works in the world has come up in solitude. 8) Contentment gives great joy. An attitude of "come what may, I will be happy" will bring incomparable happiness in your life. 9) By Tapas the body and senses becomes strong. When you are fasting you are not pleasing god or going to heaven but it makes your body strong to resist in all conditions. 10) By self-study the divine presence are experienced. Observing and by being hollow and empty you become a channel (a part) of the divine. 11) By one-pointed devotion to divine Samadhi comes up. 12) : Practicing yoga with strength and in a relaxed manner gives rise to harmony with the physical body (asana). 13) When we are comfortable we are not steady, but when we are erect we are stiff and not comfortable. But asana is combination of both, when you are erect and steady it brings comforts in you. 14) experiencing the infinity.

: How this can be done ? Then it is said. By letting go the effort and

15) : What is effect of it ? Then it is said it hits reality in you. It removes all conflict from mind. When you are in conflict just do asana and right away clarity will come in you. 16) : In that state of asana, obstructing the natural flow of breath. Our flow is not natural at all. We have made our breath so unnatural by being unnatural so whatever now is natural looks as unnatural. We have to revert it back. How does u revert back? : Break the movement of breaths by counts and having attention at places. 17) : All pranayamas are described in just one sutras. Breathing hold - Breath out hold and with different counts having attention at different parts of body. But there is one more pranayama that is happening automatically. When all the thoughts and ideas are cleared from mind natural pranayama starts. Pranayama should be learned with proper guidance. 18) What are effects of all these pranayamas?

: The veil covering the light of the

true self then vanishes. Then you are able to see that you are light. : Mind gets this ability to stay on any one thing at one time. It gets the ability to intent. That's why you would have noticed that after good pranayama you are able to meditate even.

19) : Mind is used to clinging on to objects of senses but when you give them some other objects to cling on that is where different guided meditation used. That is called : A substitute food for mind to dive inside. 20) : That brings all our senses, our body, everything together as one whole. That's why Jesus said "I have come to make man whole". That's what you feel after Kriya your energy becomes complete, you become whole. 21) Then all your senses listens you, you don't have to listen them.

Day 10 Veils of Misery - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 10 (Day 10) - January 3'1995 Weggis, Switzerland 1) What do Tapas do? Tapas purify and strengthen our system. 2) Unfortunately Tapas brings Ego in you. Out of proportion glorifying tapas simply leads to ego. 3) What can be solution? Immediately after Tapas - Self-study is required. Look to the motives behind your action. Often you don't go for things you really want. You want to go for things that others have. Tapas without self-study lead to ego. 4) Your desire is not even your desire. You have purified the body but are you the body? You have made your mind empty but are you your mind? Are you your thoughts? These self- study uplifts you to the universe which is unknown to us. It takes you to one step further. It eliminates misery and sufferings. 5) Buddha said: 1: Observe the body (Kayaanu Paschana) 2: Observe the sensations (Vedananu Paschana) 3: Observe the flow of mind (Chittanu Paschana) 4: Observe your true nature (Dhammanu Paschana) 6) without surrender self-study is not charming. Practice characterized by rigor and vigilance toward itself, without attachment to the outcome, is known as kriya yoga. I am nobody. In this nobodiness union happens with divine. Then realization comes; IT’S ALL ME. 7) Offering incense, candles is not surrendering. Offer every part of body, offer every thought (goodbad-pleasant-unpleasant), offer all your negativities as well as positivity, merits-demerits offer everything to divine and feel connected to it. 8) It’s up to you to feel close to the divine or to anyone. Nothing else other than your own self can convince you that you are so close to divine. 9) Weeds do not need attention, useful plant needs attention. Your useless doubts-thoughts are like weeds which do not need attention and you are that useful plant which needs attention. 10) Even doing this know that you are not doing anything. Be a silent observer. 11) Samadhi and equality in your life.

: The purpose of doing this is to reduce misery and to bring

12) What are the root causes of misery in life? **avidya ( ) = ignorance; confusion; lack of insight **asmita ( ) = self centeredness; identification with the human body and that which is mutable in human beings **raga ( ) = desire; attraction; wish; belief that outer circumstances are responsible for good luck **dvesha (

) = revulsion; aversion; belief that outer circumstances are responsible for unhappiness

**abhiniveshah (

) = deep seated anxiety; fear of death; will to live

13) : Ignorance is having an idea of WHO YOU ARE !! A fixed idea about WHO YOU ARE totally destroys your growth and limits your possibilities. 14)

: Oneness of our intellect and our self.

15) : Craving comes from a pleasant experience which again creates a craving in you and same craving makes you miserable. You expect everyone around you to behave in an enlighten way creates misery for you. Knowingly or unknowingly everybody expects the same. "How things should be!!" makes you more miserable. 16) : Aversion or hatred comes with unpleasant experience. Aversion also brings same misery as craving do. 17)

: Though through intellect you know everything but a little amount of fear existing in you

is called 18) Nature has imposed all these five things in everybody. These miseries have got four stages. **prasupta ( ) = dormant; latent **tanu (

) = weak; young; incipient

**vichchhinna ( **udara (

) = full fledged; full grown; robust

) = powerful; overwhelming; massive

19) Sadhana makes these five sources of misery as thin as possible. Before you were on spiritual path you were getting angry and now you get angry too but there is Huge difference in both these cases. Isn’t it!! 20) What is the way to get rid of all these miseries? these five vritties can be eliminated through meditation and Patanjali emphasize more on meditation that it must be done. 21) If you don't cleanse your consciousness from these five source of miseries then you will have to

suffer in this life and the next life too These all will be reserved in your Karma tank and you will suffer in next life too. Through meditation these Karma can be washed away right now. Before this body drops you, you drop all your past impressions. 22) Different karmas will give different fruits at different times. 23) Rishi Patanjali explains on how we gain our birth? **Jati ( ): In which body you are coming. Are you born as a monkey, chicken, or human? Some are born in Ethiopia and some are born in Switzerland. Many asks such question Why so and so are born in such and such places where there is so much of misery? Because of your Past Karmas you born at relevant places. If a person is thinking of chicken n chicken all the time then there is 100% possibility that he may born in poultry in next birth. You try this. Just take any thought and sleep in the night the same thought would be your first thought when you wake up in the morning. Last impression carries much weight then what you wonder whole life. **ayuh ( ) = life; life span; duration **bhogah (

) = enjoyment; happiness

24) If you have done good to people good fruit will be rewarded to you. If you have done bad to others same fruit will be rewarded back.

Day 11 Eliminating the Cause of Pain - Sri Sri PYS - DVD 11 (Day 11) - January 4'1995 Weggis, Switzerland 1) If you look into all joy and pleasures of world then they all come with a Tax. You have to pay tax to them and this tax is “Sorrow”. 2)

Greater the joy - Greater the pain.

Result of an event brings pain to you.

longing for a pleasant event is again pain.

Memories of pleasure also brings pain. 3) That feverishness to ACHIEVE u want is painful and when you have the fear of LOOSING it is painful and when it’s already gone the MEMORIES of it is painful. So the whole thing is painful. 4) For an intelligent person (in whom wisdom has awakened) all is pain. 5) You say love is so beautiful but it’s again painful. Isn’t it!! 6) Often a male takes a female body and female takes a male body in next life due to its craving for each other. That's why in every male you find female and vice versa because there is some impression of past life running through. 7) Soul is not just satisfied by physical body coming closer. It wants something more. It wants to merge, it wants to vanish and disappear. This is what you call Love. 8) In Love there are two expressions **I want to disappear into you **I want to eat you and you disappear (laugh). These are two expression that lover pay to each other. They want to engulf each other. Lovers then become watch dogs after awhile. Often when they come to course they don't meditate, they slowly open their eyes and see "Is my girlfriend or boyfriend meditating, is he/she enjoying”?? Many times we have to say them "keep your eyes shut, don't worry about them" (laugh) [Guruji wondering] (Laugh) 9) A wish creates tremendous amount of pain and then trying someone to please create another headache.

10) If you don’t know spiritual practices then it’s painful, if you know and don’t do then also it’s even more painful. Many say "Ohh I haven't done my meditation today, feeling dull". People need something to complain. 11)

if you look with the eyes of wisdom then everything is pain.

12) When you realize that everything is pain then how to go ahead? What to do? 13) By knowing that "I am not the body" and through "Meditation" you can really eliminate cause of pain. 14) Rishi Patanjali clearly says "That doesn't mean you have to run away from the world. This world is for you to enjoy. Great scenery, great food, all enjoyments of worlds are for you. But while enjoying don't forget yourself. This is "Viveka". 15) : Each things conveys you message, gives u an idea that how great the consciousness is. Every aspect of this world has an expression in it. Everything in this world is dynamic not static. Even mountains appear to be static but they are dynamic. They all undergo certain stages of change. And everything is governed by qualities. 16) the entire creation is made of five elements and five senses. The entire creation is for you to give pleasure but whatever gives u pleasure also should give u relief else it would be pain. 17) For example: If you like gulab jamun. You can go on eating 1,2,3,4...10 but how long...A stage will come when you will say "ohh my god, let me get relief from it" 18) If you don't take relief from pleasure then pleasure becomes pain. 19) Physical objects can only be deemed to such if perceived by the true self. For whom who have already awaken himself the world appears to be totally different. For him the world is no more suffering. 20) For intelligent; Life is just a journey in bus where destination comes and he gets off but bus still keeps moving because it has to take other people to destination as well. 21) : Once an object has fulfilled its purpose, it does not disappear but instead remains in existence as such for others; for the object is valid for all. 22) Observing incoming tendencies in you and knowing that you are not that tendency is sign of intelligent person. 23) If you think these “vrittis” are yours then its ignorance and what is the way to come out of this

ignorance?? 24) The definite understanding of "my body, world and entire universe is going to change" or "I am imperishable" or "I am untouched" or "I am hollow and empty" or "I am going to die one day". This definite knowledge takes you out of the cycle of pain.

The strength of his message has inspired a wave of service based on spirituality through a huge body of volunteers, who are driving these projects forward in critical areas around the globe. As a spiritual teacher, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has rekindled the traditions of yoga and meditation and offered them in a form that is relevant to the 21st century. Beyond reviving ancient wisdom, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has created new techniques for personal and social transformation. These include the Sudarshan Kriya® which has helped millions of people to find relief from stress and discover inner reservoirs of energy and peace in daily life. In a mere 30 years, his programs have raised the quality of life for participants in 151 countries. A Figure of Peace As an ambassador of peace, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar plays a key role in conflict resolution and spreads his vision of non-violence at public forums and gatherings world-wide. Regarded as a neutral figure with a sole agenda of peace, he represents hope to people in conflict. He has received particular credit for bringing opposing parties to the negotiating table in Iraq, the Ivory Coast, Kashmir and Bihar. He was appointed the Chairman of Reception Committee for the 500th anniversary celebrations of the Coronation of Krishnadevaraya (by Government of Karnataka, India). Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is also a member of the Amarnath Shrine Board (appointed by Government of Jammu and Kashmir, India). Through his initiatives and addresses, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has consistently emphasized the need for reinforcing human values and recognizing humanity as our highest identity. Fostering interfaith harmony and calling for multi-cultural education as the remedy for fanaticism are significant parts of his efforts to achieve sustainable peace on our planet. His work has touched the lives of millions of people around the world, going beyond the barriers of race, nationality and religion with the message of a “one-world family”; that inner and outer peace are possible; and that a stress-free, violence-free society can be created through service and the reawakening of human values.
